12 жыл бұрынJo Jones is one of the greatest drummer in the history of Jazz. Most inventive, he frequently improvises the most unpredictable and bold breaks with an impressive rythmic energy. This example of his drum solo shows his amazing and unique variety.
The extraordinary solo of Jo Jones, a magician on drums, ends in a blaze of spectacular glory the film "l'Aventure du Jazz." This film will be showed again in France in 2012 by its director Louis Panassié to commemorate the centenary of Hugues Panassié's birth in 1912 and also the foundation of the "Hot Club de France " 80 years ago with the collaboration of Charles Delaunay and Pierre Nourry.
A showing is already expected in December 2012 in Paris by the current Hot Club president François Desbrosses. More showings are being organized in several french towns.
Soon you will see "l'Aventure du Jazz" in Lattes (near Montpellier ) on Friday, March 9 in the Jacques Coeur theater.

L'extraordinaire solo de ce magicien de la batterie qu'est Jo Jones termine en apothéose et de façon spectaculaire le montage de « L'Aventure du Jazz ». Ce film sera à nouveau projeté en France en 2012 par son réalisateur Louis Panassié. A l'occasion de la commémoration du centième anniversaire de la naissance d'Hugues Panassié en 1912 et également de la fondation, en collaboration avec Charles Delaunay et Pierre Nourry, du Hot-Club de France il y a 80 ans.
Une projection est notamment prévue par son actuel Président, François Desbrosses, à Paris en décembre 2012.
D'autres séances sont actuellement en cours d'organisation en diverses villes de France.
On pourra voir « L'Aventure du Jazz » tout d'abord à Lattes (dans la banlieue de Montpellier) le vendredi 9 mars à 20h.30 au Théâtre « Jacques Cœur ».

I now LOVE this dude. Hated him when I was a teenager. ONLY because I was an aspiring FUNK drummer and Hip-Hop artist and my drum instructor at the time idolized Jo Jones. "This is REAL drumming", he would say and just shit on any other styles! So I refused to listen to Jo Jones. I now regret doing so!!! LOL

I have a similar story. I had a teacher back in high-school that found out I was a big fan of older music. He kept a giant book of Bob Dylan lyrics on his desk and always urged me to listen. I argued that Dylan killed folk and the Beatles killed jazz so I wasn't interested. Now as an adult I have become a HUGE Bob Dylan fan.

Your teacher was a fool, some great innovation in those genres. Im not surprised your feelings towards an arrogant individual can be transferred onto the artist they like. For me this happened when a snobbish guitarist would rave about Phish and Derek Trucks Band. I can see they are good but I just never want to listen to them.

@@ssdirk yws there is a perfect drumming. When you playing isn't interfered by your mind but flows directly from your soul and at the samw time your in the flow of it and you feel it and ylu know it. That's perfect drumming. It applies to any music instrument: guitar, piano whatsoever. When it flows naturally out of your soul and it moves you to express it, what then comes out is perfect even if its technically not perfect but perfect in its expression. I wish that any devoted musician once experiences this because there's no better feeling when you feel one and united with your instrument. Papa Joe surely is in the flow here. His facial expression speaks books about it. Outstanding drummer. In the league of the bests of the best.

The last few moments of this video are magical… he’s almost experiencing a musical rapture! Papa Jo may not have had the raw technical skill of Buddy Rich and the like but between his musicality, innovation and his sheer love for the drums he’s one of the very best to play the kit. It’s a privilege for me to share the instrument with him.

I am 70 years old and have been drumming since I was 12. This man has always been my ideal. So much sound out of such a small set. Ginger Baker said it best, most of today's rock drummers are bashers not drummers. This was a drummer.

Jo was THE archetype for modern big band drumming. As part of Basie's first rhythm section, they redefined swing and made an entire nation get up and dance. Buddy Rich always cited him as a main influence and referred to him as the slickest drummer who ever lived. Wish we had more footage of the drumset's founding fathers..

Without disputing his abilities, it seems that he might not have been a "gentleman": "In addition to his artistry on the drums, Jones was known for his irascible, combative temperament. One famous instance of his irritable temper was in the spring of 1936, during a jam session at the Reno Club in Kansas City. A young Charlie Parker was attempting to play an improvised solo, but lost track of the chord changes; as a sign of contempt, Jones threw a cymbal from his drum kit onto the floor near Parker's feet to get him to leave the stage."

One of my favorite drummers, but I don't think I've ever heard him play a lengthy drum solo. Every bit as tasteful, colorful, and melodic as one would expect! This is so much better than all the hyper-virtuosic stuff all over KZfaq. This is true musicianship!

In 1930 at 18, he discovered Jazz, met Louis Armstrong and plethora of other musicians whom he became friends with. Damn, I love seeing this kind of joy when someone truly talented, truly skilled, gets to display their art. I love seeing Steph Curry play ball. I love seeing Daniel Day-Lewis act. I love seeing Freddie Mercury sing. I never knew about this guy until today, and I'm terrible at music, but wow. He's captivating. He's up in that level, at least to a totally untrained ear like mine.

Definitely great ear man it's innovation at it's highest level and when genius level potential is fulfilled can't miss it. all through life theirs greats but the genius is the innovator a true original. You nailed it obviously he's expressing himself 100% he's conversing and enjoying and entertaining his quintet with miles, trane ,red and Paul 😳 omg. Saw Jordan a bunch of times had to.... fllew to Chicago for playoffs once a year...but from Boston seeing birds Celtics that crowd stared like school kids over during the layup line , as if reduced to the local high school star scenario but in NBA in the garden with big 3. He moved different than anybody acceleration, explosion, nuance , and flexibility again innovation plus real key on top his ability to hold that ball like a toy only Otis Thorpe , chamberlain, rodman, some others obviously but big men! Giving greatest athlete on the court all the most elite skills then that added component. Magic obviously too it's outrageous advantage Phil Jackson loves to talk about in greatest conversation because kobe playing to his credit and genius developed his shot earlier , even with hand checking and era of 7 footers you couldn't stop from getting to the hoop and finishing. Michael a 6-6 guy who can pick up any hall of Fame point guard his era full court defensively was silly. Steph in another way absolutely silly how soft his touch and mechanics are to allow such range. undeniably greatest shooter of all time,Larry in big moments, Reggie too, ray Allen poetry in motion, glen rice what form I think Dale Ellis was best pure mechanics until Steph. Dale was machine. Steph is prodigious shooter. Klay Thompson too what a treat. Two of my favorite topic's sorry man 👌☺️ great observation and comment!!

This guy makes me rethink everything about what makes a good drum solo. He obviously has the technical abilities but chooses to make it more a performance. Unique, awesome drummer!
