As a Filipino with Japanese and Chinese ancestry, I can't relate on being mistaken a Mexican or Latino, but the amount of times I've mistaken Latinos, in particular Mexicans, as Filipinos, is too much lol I'm glad Mexicans don't take it as an offense, cause I always feel awkward when they say they're not Filipinos 😅
@philomelodia
@philomelodia 2 жыл бұрын
Well, there’s no reason to get offended. Sometimes, Latinos get mistaken for other races besides Filipino. My cousin gets asked if he’s Armenian all the time. He never gets mad. I got asked if I was from morocco one time. I didn’t get mad. People get mad too easy for too many little things. That’s bad for your stomach. Ulcers, you know.
@alistairt7544
@alistairt7544 2 жыл бұрын
@@philomelodia I believe it all stems to *intentions*. If people are just unsure and mistake people's ethnicity due to uncertainty with no malice, there shouldn't be a reason to be mad about it. But there are situations where some people just don't care, remain ignorant, and are unwilling to learn, and intentionally assume someone's ethnicity as mockery and to intend to insult others(aka racists), then that's a reason for people to be upset. Like in high school, there were students who'd just call me Chinese or Jackie Chan, or assume I speak Japanese and continually doing so, even if I've told them I'm Filipino and I don't know Chinese or Japanese. They purposely do so to mock and insult, and those are the situations I got upset and I call them out, because they're basically racists(on top of being called gook and chink but that's another story). Then there are people who'd come up and ask if I were [insert Asian ethnicity here] out of curiosity. I don't get upset on that and I just politely correct them. And these can be good conversation topics and icebreakers and people learn something new. But I agree, I feel like there are people out there who are too sensitive and easily get upset on the most minor things lol

I've been mistaken for every kind of brown person under the sun, but I kind of love it lol. True true. I, myself, get mistaken for a Mexican specially when I go to supermarkets like Food 4 Less or Vallarta. But if you actually research about it, when the Philippines was a Spanish colony, a lot of the friars, government officials and soldiers who were stationed in the Philippine islands were actually from Mexico. Yes, Mexico was also colonized by the Spaniards around the same time as the Philippines. So Jokoy is right that the culture of the Philippines is more like Mexico's rather than Spain's.

@Yitz Hauser Wrong, Filipinos are mixed with the Spaniards, Not with the mexicans, Mexico itself was govern by Spain, It was spain who settled there and then move to the philippines, It was SPAIN that colonized the philippines, New Spain is not mexico, Mexico that time wasn't even present, New Spain is Still Spain, It was spain who settled to the philippines and mixed with the natives, And for the Native americans you are saying, The native americans did settled in the philippines, But only few of them mix with the locals, the Aztecs were send to fight the Bruneian Empire along with Native filipinos and spaniards, they were send to fight not to intebreed with the natives in the philippines, so conclusion Philippines was COLONIZED BY SPAIN, NEW SPAIN IS STILL SPAIN, It was Spain who settled to the philippines, and White Spaniards are the one's who mix with the native of the philippines, And Mexico and The other south americans became independent too early, While the philippines was still govern by spain that time, so All the white spaniards were send directly from spain, since mexico and The whole south americas were already independent from spain.

I’m Filipino, and while I never get mistaken for Mexican (I look too Asian for that lol), there are a lot of Filipinos that could definitely be mistaken for Mexicans (and vice versa).

@AutistAslan Hello there. Most of us Filipinos don’t actually have Spanish DNA. Try watching walking tour in our country, most of us don’t look like Mexican. There are many videos of Filipinos who take DNA ancestry test here in KZfaq, they look disappointed when they found out they don’t have Spanish DNA. It’s only in the colonial mentality of Filipinos especially the older generation that having more “Western Genes” will make you superior. Colonial mentality is also the reason why they keep on telling that we look Mexican even though we look very different from you guys.

@윤지혜 60% speak spanish in 1898, first Philippine constitution written in Spanish along with the first revolutionary pamphlets, etc. The history of the Philippines is also written in Spanish, it is a language that belongs to you, it should not be considered a foreign language.

I'm only a quarter filipino but I always hated that my family barely ever talked about it. Most of my family on my dad side is black/filipino. Once I discovered how good the food is I was pissed my family barely acknowledges that side

I'm half filipino half black. My son's dad is white, so our son is a quarter filipino, quarter black n half white. If u look at him, he looks Mexican. I try my best to teach my son about filipino culture bc I grew up w a lot of it. For his first communion, my mom even insisted he wear a Barong Tagalog. He looked so cute n handsome:)

Must be coz Filipinos that migrated to the West (as compared to those simply going abroad to work like in the Middle East) tend to be escaping from this shithole so I'm not surprised some of them would rather forget about it.
