Joan Baez has always used her voice as a tool for social change.
At the height of her career in the 1960s, Joan was known the world over as the Queen of Folk. She used her fame to help spread the tenets of the non-violence movement, and was a close ally to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Joan also helped introduce Bob Dylan to the world by giving him stage time at her shows when she was the biggest ticket in town and he was a complete unknown.
In this conversation with Rick Rubin, Joan explains why after performing for over 60 years, she recently made the decision to stop singing. She also talks about the time she and Pete Seeger were run out of town by local cops after a performance. And how it was a badge of honor when the Brazilian government banned her music because they felt it made people too emotional.

“You - special, miraculous, unrepeatable, fragile, fearful, tender, lost, sparking ruby emerald jewel, rainbow splendor person. IT’S UP TO YOU. Would it embarrass you very much if I were to tell you that I love you?” This is what Joan Baez replied once when asked what to do to make our world a better world to live in. Pure poetry, pure wisdom, pure goodness. Joan Baez, a bodhisattva among us ,knows how to play the best in our hearts and souls. Her voice is powerful, tender, warm and true as always .Love and Gratitude, from Brasil

It was a maiden aunt who introduced me to Joan Baez, late sixties. My aunt had records that my parents didn't have. Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Neil Diamond ... and Joan Baez. Farewell, Angelina was the first adventure. Blessed Are. The Lovesong album, Bangladesh, The Night They Drive Old Dixie Down ... The First Ten Years. Wow, the first ten years .... Humming along wasn't enough. I wanted to know the words and some were on the album sleeves. Joan Baez, you made me sad and you made me know you, and you made me know myself. I learned much about my maiden aunt, about your times, and about my times, times I was too young to appreciate. You're still here, and when you released Day After Tomorrow I raced out and bought it. It's the only album I have that my maiden aunt never had. I couldn't believe her and my idol was back. Well, now it's the day after tomorrow, and you're hanging up your guitar. Thank you for still, even when I know the words, still making me sad. And thinking of the other.

I really enjoyed this interview, serious in parts, humerous in other parts and just came across as very easy going and great insight into Joan's career. I have been a Joan Baez fan since I was about 16 years old and now a senior citizen. Last saw Joan in a concert in So. California. I think it was at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Well here is my hope. I know Joan has stopped singing now and has been working on art projects. This must keep her pretty busy. But....I do wonder if there are songs that were never released from the early years. Kind of like Joni Mitchell released a 5 CD box set, Archive of material that was not released before, songs that she sang at coffeehouses in Toronto in the early to mid 60's. Some of it was songs she even sang at her parent's house but never released until this archived box set came out in 2020. I think it would be great if Joan Baez would consider doing something like this. Perhaps she has some obscure songs she sang but never released them before. Doesn't necessarily have to be all from the early years but anything, previously unreleased material would be great to hear from any decade.

Thank you for this real "talk". Working in speech and language-- communication, more than 30 years, this is an understandable reason to stop singing. I watched Ms Baez in her last concert and am pleased to see her final record released and know the gift of painting good "mischief makers" has become another medium of expression. I have understood her nonviolence approach in life as a small child. Wonderful interview!!

we love you so much joan baez; you have brought an almighty glimpse of God's love for all creatures great and small. the oracles of God come through you and always will. take heart for a job well done; the angels and the saints may they bless you; there is none like you; you probably are too humble to see that; but non violence needs no words. gandhi and MLK and Jesus all come out in your spirit JB, even without words

I have massive admiration for Joan. I am an old folkie myself and I grew up listening to her wonderful music. Besides having a once in a million beautiful voice she is also a talented guitarist and song writer. What’s not to admire and love about Joan.

"banned her music because it was too emotional" ? LOL OMG, i laid in bed last night listening to Joan Baez Song for David with tears Streaming down my Cheeks and I'm EVER grateful for that emotion, for being able to be deeply moved in 2023 for a time in music where I was a young teen and I wouldn't have it any other way. If this was banned I'd be destroyed, music is life. Joan is an Angel ❤

Rick Rubin has got to be the most intelligent, intuitive interviewer of musicians I've ever heard. I think it has to do with record producing being somewhat of an 'obstetric art'; but he really brings out the best of these artists that he talks with. Kudos, Rick!

I am going to see Lightfoot next month. I know I will love it no matter what. However, it is sad when voices deteriorate and I am hoping his hasn't, at least not too much. Saw a vid of Emmylou recently, and hers seems to have diminished. I saw her in Dublin in 1975 and have since many times watched vid of her UK tours around that time. What an angelic instrument he had! As for Joan I applaud her 'resignation', because that means she is exactly as grounded as she has always appeared to be!

She was blocked from singing in Constitution Hall by the DAR, then had a alternate concert in front of the Linciln Monument which drew 35k. That was a front page story across the world. Baez' episode of the Smothers Brothers, her only prime time TV appearance in the 60s, was canceled. She didn't even mention either to Rubin.
