The muting of her comments occurred in the original broadcast.
Welcome! These musical clips are from a large video collection that is now being converted from VHS/Beta to digital. There is some viewing quality loss from the original video source due to the age of the tapes, but the performances are preserved and still a joy to view. I'm finding many lost performances from vintage R&B, Soul, Pop, Broadway, Cabaret and other performances. This channel will be the Ed Sullivan channel for the digital generation, something for everyone to enjoy. Many of the performances will be seen for the first time since they were originally televised. I will be adding many musical performances from a variety of sources that I hope you will enjoy. Please hit the like button if you can.

Two comedic geniuses playing off of each other. This is entertainment that current comedians cant come close to. I am more entertained by a 2-3 decade old clip than the new material that todays artists come up with. Joan fought for every applause she ever got until she passed. As her fans all know she was robbed of the title but she got the applause. Thank you Ms. Rivers for making me smile and laugh.

Just watching this old clip now although I always stayed up late every night to watch Johnny Carson in the old days. I have read that he stopped talking to her because her own show overlapped for a bit with his time slot. But at the moment I am reading an excellent biography of Johnny by his lawyer. It’s not a slash job but he does talk about Johnny and his moods changing from one minute to the next. But it is or was still a sad ending to what seemed like good camaraderie.

NBC did not renew her contract, she insisted many times that she needed a new contract and they ignored her. Fox offered her her own show and tons of money, how could she possibly refuse the offer? She did call Carson before signing with them and he hung up on her twice. Later on he did everything in his power to destroy her career and had her blacklisted for over 25 years. She only returned to the Tonight Show a few months before her death in 2014. He was such a sonofabitch, but in the end Joan Rivers triumphed.

@@mistersurrealist Johnny could have put her in his shoes instead of Jay Leno, but chose not to. He stabbed her in the back for her loyalty to him. Yes, she did triumph! Her jewelry line saved her, she said, but she was always classy and left many of us a great example of overcoming adversity which is the best revenge on those who hurt us and throw our loyalty by the wayside. Miss her so much, but am so grateful for computers and videos of her on here whenever I need an attitude adjustment.

Joan Rivers was the queen of the one-liners, and Johnny was such a good host, he could ask her the right questions which would coax them. Many hosts today make it too obvious that they're playing the straight man for a comedy bit. [Host]: "I understand your dog speaks Spanish?" [Guest]: "Yes, he says "El-Bark! El-Bark!"" [Audience (at gunpoint)]: "Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!"

@ Dogphlap. In John McEnroe's autobiography, "You Cannot Be Serious" (which was published in the UK under the simple title "Serious"), McEnroe says that he went out one night with a famous woman from NY. He doesn't reveal her name in the book, but it is blatantly obvious that it must have been Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis. Denise Spurlock you are right. In the long run, she hurt her chances of being the host that succeeded Johnny and her show had little chance of succeeding going up against the Tonight Show. However, that all being said, as much as I love Carson and as talented as he was, he was extremely petty in the way he treated Joan for going after an opportunity very few would have passed up. So sad and a shame to break up a great professional relationship and I believe a nice friendship over a little competition. Very insecure of him. His show was never going to be in trouble because of Joan. Even if the show would have lasted.

@ Denise Spurlock. Joan Rivers made a huge mistake by failing to call Carson immediately when she was first offered her own late night TV talk show to get Carson's opinion as to whether or not to accept Fox Network's offer. Out of common courtesy she owed it to Carson to let him know immediately about Fox TV's offer. She let Fox Network convince her to not mention the offer to anyone so that Fox Network could make the official announcement first. She waited until just before Fox Network made the official announcement of her new show before she picked up the phone and called Carson to tell him about it.
