During a February appearance on the television program "Fashion Police," comedienne Joan Rivers made a joke about model Heidi Klum that some deemed highly offensive. In this clip from a longer interview, Ms. Rivers tells her side of the story to WSJ's Lee Hawkins, as well as the importance of humor.

Joan Rivers was only "Jewish" insofar as it served as a tool for comedic purposes. To say that she didn't live by the tenets of Judaism would be an understatement. To be fair, that was her choice; that was her right. Jerry Lewis, with whom she had a nasty feud --- famously said that Joan Rivers "set Jews back a thousand years." Actually, he was giving her too much credit by implying that she represented Jewish Americans. Joan Rivers was many things, but her "Jewishness" was a mere cultural affectation that she trotted out only when it served her needs.

Joan Rivers can do no wrong. She's the essence of comedy. If you are offended by this you should seriously think about moving to a place where thoughts and self-expression are censored by force to meet only ONE criteria. This is the price we pay for living in a country where we are free to speak our mind. We are also free to tune out if we don't like it.

@@moonbeeps - Actually,,, that's Exactly the way it works. The concept of being able to express yourself freely is to PROTECT UNPOPULAR SPEECH. Not just speech that YOU happen to approve of. Perhaps there should be a little government-approved phrase book that we can all carry with us.. ? You know... like in China.. or in NK?? Popular speech - BY DEFINITION - does not need protections. In order to enjoy freedoms.. you must be willing to risk someone being offended. There is NO right to not be offended... no matter how much it validates your sense of righteous indignation. I agree with Joan about her joke: in order to make good dark jokes, the target of mockery must be the offenders not the offendees. If you make a joke about r*pe for example, you have to make a punchline at the expense of the r*pist. Likewise, with Holocaust jokes, the target of mockery must be the nazis, not the Jewish people.

Dude, I don´t think we are communicating in the same language. It is just wrong to say all Germans are Nazis. It is wrong to say that only Germans are Nazis. Forcing the Naziideology upon people is not turning them into a Nazi. You have to believe into the Naziideology in order to be a Nazi. I never said it is appropriate to joke about anybody who has been killed in WWII or any other war or act of violence. It´s also wrong to publicly state German is a synonym for Nazi as you did.

It's a joke. omgawd. Joan can take something horrible and tragic, own it and turn it around. It's very empowering she can laugh in the face of adversity and triumph over it. She's at a point in her life or maturity where she can do this. Perhaps others can't do the same -- whatever their tradgedy and can't get over it. For those people, it's offensive. But they need to get over it. Whatever your personal tradgedy is -- whether it's a car accident, a divorce, etc.
