Fanny Mendelssohn wrote much finer music than this. So before we rush to any kind of judgment, have a listen to the first 2 movements of the D minor trio, op.11. I am of the opinion that the final 2 movements are something of a let down, and no doubt Fanny would have revised them had she had the opportunity to regularly perform the work. Nevertheless, the opening 2 movements of the trio are rich in invention. Her string quartet too is worth seeking out. Of all the genres she worked it, it is perhaps her songs which are the finest. I think it's quite obvious that she excelled her brother in this area..
