The original Road House with Patrick Swayze is one of the greatest B-movies of all time and something of a staple as far as action movies go. Yet, the buzz surrounding Doug Liman’s remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal has been good, with many saying it's so well done that it should have gotten a theatrical release. So how does it fare? Here's our review!

Because he can play more than himself.. Statham is pretty good, better than the other 2 , but yeah no comparison to JG. Reminds me of the story of a kid coming up to George Peppard on Home From the Hill asking if he's a movie star,he said " NO I'm am an actor".. pointed to George Hamilton " He's a movie star". JG is an actor, the other 3 are movie stars.

Jason Statham is a man I can't take seriously having been in my teens in the 90's. Gold speedos and glitter all over his body in the Shaman comin on video. I just can't see him as tough after that. every film hes in, i think about that video and his tough guy act looks rediculous. like someone cast Ben Shapiro as a pro wrestler or something. It's just ridiculous.

Your so right man. I thought the new version was trash tbh. Dalton Is supposed to be a badass womanizer. You really felt that in the originals his aura had that. This jake guy is boring and has no aura really and I couldn't imgaine him seducing a girl. He seems so boring then you got conner going over the top to. The original had great music great acting. Great location choice and vibe of the film. It was a cool movie. This new version really doesn't feel right. Theres no emotion in the new dalton's eyes.

If the movie is so removed from the original, why name it after the original? The answer is they need nostalgia to get it noticed. I think this hurts the new movie by endless comparisons.

I actually had a conversation with Patrick here in Albuquerque. Somewhere around late 1995. Literally just saw him meet up with a friend in the parking lot of my local theater. Patrick was in town for the arabian horse show they used to have here. He was big into buying and selling horses in his spare time. Anyway, he was meeting up with a friend from the show to take them to go see Three Wishes. Anyway, as I was walking by and noticed who he was. I asked him, being a martial arts nerd I've been my whole life what his thoughts on Bill "Superfoot" Wallace were. Dude stopped dead in his tracks and we talked martial arts until he had to go. about 15 minutes. What I learned from that conversation is that dude DEEPLY loved martial arts. Guys knowledge ran pretty deep honestly. Anyway, had he lived, he totally would have loved following the MMA scene and how it's exposed that basically all traditional martial arts are complete bullshit con operations. That guy would have LOVED the evolution it's gone through. The guy I talked to, he would have welcomed a modernization of the movie and likely would have been helping promote it. The guy didn't talk trash. He was way too respectful of other martial artists for any of that.

@@jimapplebee5322 It was cool, totally random. I had only recently moved to Albuquerque and had no idea they had a huge horse show at the time. Was still adjusting to New Mexico's very unique culture. I remember seeing him chilling on the hood of some car thinking "that dude looks just like patrick swayze". I went over to tell him how much he looked like him as a joke but as I got closer I was like "holy shit that's totally the guy". He was super cool about it. Really good dude. I studied Martial Arts from 6-18 and met a lot of traditional martial artists over the years. He had a really level headed approach to where American martial arts were at. We talked about how I had to quit Tae Kwon Do and take Kempo and American style kickboxing so I didn't have garbage hands. He mentioned a few arts he studied, I don't remember which, but we connected on how it was impossible at the time to find 1 art to make you a well rounded martial artist. Patrick would have loved MMA.

Well remakes have been around about a century and there are a ton of great ones better than the original. Think you've got that theater vs home theology a bit off there.... Theater = big fuzzy screen, terrible sound, bed bug infested chairs, of which are also covered in hair (all kinds), fluids, solids, and sadly more... Home = 4K HDR screen, likely 55"-80" or so... far better detail, far better color, far better contrast, and far better sound too. As most are going to have sound systems, subs, etc. From there it just goes up with options, adaptive rear lighting, amazing seating, snacks that aren't $40+ each thing... from drinks, to candy, to popcorn.... Home's better in every way, but it's also where you're gonna see through bad cgi... if anything bad cgi is FAR more hidden on the big blurry screen. While someone else's body lice make you their new home...

You see he really is dark. Anti-hero of sorts. A good guy that if pushed too far goes dark and doesn't give a FK all the way through. Those were my take aways. As you say, great B movie. I agree... The fight scenes were pretty good, but I really couldn't submit to the fantasy of the Monroe County Sheriff being that corrupt, and he "ran" all of Monroe County, that was just too far fetched. I'm gonna take a guess as to why they couldn't actually film in Monroe County, they had this movie looking like a western with only one sheriff in town and few deputies 😂😂😂. They should have picked some remote spot out in the middle of nowhere for all that dumb shit 😂😂

Just thinking of the original puts a smile on my face. It’s a mess but it’s just too much fun. Much as I love Jake and Doug Liman is a good choice you just can’t replace the original. It’s of it’s time and place and I wouldn’t change it (although I would love to see the original cut)

I think Conor, key word “looked” great in the movie but the writing for his lines…. I get he’s a debuting actor and everything but at least give him a shot at something serious. His best moment, acting moment, is at the end of the bar scene, pretty chilling.

Saw this on Prime the other day, and yeah "direct to video" really paints a picture of where this movie needs to be. Gyllenhaal was not a great star for his roll, he seemed like too nice of a guy for someone who fights for a living, and even McGreggory had a goofy smile on his face the whole time which granted gave him the psychopath look really well just didn't seem to fit in right with the movie. There are some nods to the original, the waitress bringing him breakfast the first morning (no Jake in the buff though), there is a romance with the doctor but much more subdued in nature, even a nod to the "pain don't hurt" staple scene you felt was coming... but he didn't want any of that instead opting for a big bandage. I will say the MacGuffin for the movie of wanting to have a resort on the property and she is the last one to not sell is a bit better than the original where the guy was pissed because his nephew got fired. But in general none of the characters felt very memorable or part of the story really, there's the young girl at the book store who has like 3 scenes in the whole movie, there's barely a scene with one new bouncer he hires... "oh you have scars on your knuckles... ok you're hired!" type of scene, heck the owner of the bar felt like she was barely in the movie.

The worst: Jake getting knife stabbed by a drunk with 15 secs notice when he is supposed to be invinsible. The cornball act necessary for him to meet the nurse, but silly. The best: Casting Bucho from Desperado.

I watched this remake last night [at time of comment]...and for me, I'd call it like this: As a Friday Night romp/remake...it was good, it had all the ingredients for a goodie/baddie battle...brief story history of the protagonist...and gets to the point. However!...for me, it didn't have that family-vibe built between the characters like the original did. The original with Swayze broke the mould...It was by an era...With "The Original" you NEVER get bored of watching it...for an era. That being said, the ridiculousness of baddies getting severly beaten up/stabbed and "literally" coming back worked in this CGI-Punches version, as you know what you're getting, and it doesn't have to take itself seriously...My childhood era vis the original will never be surpassed "in terms of its enduring staying-power over the past 35+yrs] but this modern version, with fantastic physiques to aspire to/the fights/the action/a scarilly-wild Conor McGregor...It's good...I give the original 1989 version an 8.5/10...and the 2024 remake 7.5/10....

I kind of like the Patrick Swayze version better in that it had heart. It made you care for the Dalton character. The remake had good acting, actions sequence were decent. But it was missing something, in that I didn't care about the characters as I did with the 80s version.

I watched the new movie yesterday and the original today, and I actually enjoyed both. Similar in premise, however the story does takes some new beats here and there. Missing a Sam Elliot friend character, however Jake and the big guy do well in the second half of the movie as rivals and there is enough background character plot, plus good fight scenes in the remake to make both entertaining for me. Original 9/10 Remake 8/10 for me.

Action effects story etc are amazing. This guy doesn't know what he is talking about. He is right about one thing. It can't touch the original. But it wasn't meant to. This was meant to be a different story arc. Think multiverse. As a stand alone movie this was VERY good. Job well done.

NO NO NO NO HELL NO!! Road House 89 is a classic that should have never been touched. Hell I'm still mad that they even made a sequel to it 15 years later after the original. I'll say it before and I'll say it again. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt is just make cheap cashions on classic movies. It has to stop fans. We have to not go to these movies and spend our money on cheap remakes

When I was in like 5th grade we used to write scripts and most of us would write ones like this. Take a cool movie you saw and basically write the same thing with a couple of your own twists. Even use the same title. Those got thrown out quick if the teacher knew of the movie. Said it was lazy and unoriginal. Now that's the norm in Hollywood. Boy was she wrong. 🤣

I thought this was more of a re-imagining of the original concept rather than a remake. Aside from the basic premise, the movie plays out different. I really liked the new film. They should have called it something else. It could have been a Road House 2. Like those sequels that have the same premise but with a different cast and such.
