Flashback to the year 1984. John Hughes was coming off the one-two punch of National Lampoon’s Vacation and Mr. Mom. His scripts for both made him a hot property, and he was able to parlay that success into a three movie directing deal at Universal. He kicked it off with a wacky coming of age comedy called Sixteen Candles, which, despite middling box office, became a sensation once it hit VHS, making stars out of Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall and Michael Schoeffling. In this episode we take a look into the making of one of Hughes’ most beloved hits, and the one that set the stage for even bigger things to come, including the coming of The Brat Pack, and a whole slew of eighties teen movies that remain the gold standard the genre is judged by to this day.

I was 8 when this movie came out and I loved it. Here I am a 47 year old man looking at these kids in their roles, and they still seem like the big kids to me, haha! Being a kid in the 80s was such a magical experience. I’d trade it for nothing except a chance to go back and live one more day as a kid in the 80s!

Although I am late to the party here, I wanted to add the perspective of someone who was actually in college when this film came out. Yes, even at the time the way Long Duck Dong was presented came off as racist, but what I also recall is the way that the character stood up for himself and took charge of his own identity in a way that seemed positively inspiring. LDD became the most bad-ass character in the story. In the same way, some of the other controversial moments need to be interpreted within the context of the movie, and keep in mind that the messages those of us who actually watched it as very young adults received were overwhelmingly positive.

After both Ned Tanen and Hilton A. Green were dismissed from Universal Studios in June 1981, Seagram's Edgar Bronfman Jr. came to have an very important meeting with legendary producer/presenter Jennings Lang with John Hughes' first release for Universal was "Sixteen Candles" with a rousing cast: Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack, Haviland Morris, Paul Dooley, Carole Cook, Blanche Baker, Justin Henry, Gedde Watanabe and Michael Schoeffling, a year later. All under John Hughes' deft writing and directing chores. Locations were filmed in Illinois and at Universal Studios, Universal City, California. After three powerful years in the making of this picture between October 1981 to February 1984, only Jennings Lang saves the entire cast and crew of John Hughes' Sixteen Candles at Universal the healthy day. And everybody deserves it too. Despite production problems and middling box office, became a sensation making Sixteen Candles one of John Hughes' most beloved hits of the 1984-1985 season-June 29, 1984. And the one that set the stage for even bigger things to come, including the coming of the Brat Pack trilogy and a whole bag of 1980's teen flicks that remain the gold standard-the genre is judged by to this day.

My older sister took me to the movies to see 16 Candles on a rainy Sunday afternoon in 1984. I was 10 and it was one of our favorites. We'd usually go once or twice a month to the movies on a Sunday. The very first film we saw together was Mr. Mom in 1983. As for 1984 films, I remember we saw, Karate Kid, Teachers, Dreamscape, Ice Pirates, Beverly Hills Cop, Gremlins and Footloose. I also saw Red Dawn, Tightrope & Cloak & Dagger but I'm pretty sure my dad took me to see them on our family vacation! I use to love going to the movies especially in 1984.

Sadly to say, Bryan Gordon was fired off from the project. So does the cast and crew who didn't get along very well and the studio was not happy either-MCA/Universal who distributed the film along with StudioCanal. When Rick Finkelstein of Carolco felt the same thing that the film wasn't doing so popular at the box office, it was time to make an healthy change for Carolco. The indie production company finally made an marvelous comeback with a great pair of successes: "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Basic Instinct," "Universal Soldier" and "Stargate." As of Fall 1999, "Career Opportunites" was now currently owned by Paramount Domestic Television, a Viacom Company. It was first aired on Sundance Channel.

Wait a minute... So, Hughes "...WROTE the film with [Molly Ringwold] SPECIFICALLY in mind, FOR SAMANTHA..." ---Very Next Sentence: "...she ALMOST lost the role of Samantha...to Ally Sheedy...' You pretty much clarified why movies today will never be as good as back in the 80’s and 90’s. When you brought up at the end about Ringwald’s view in 2010 of Long Duk Dong’s character which she appeared to weigh it as 50/50, admitting comedy sometimes being cruel but also realizing that if everything was taken to the extreme, it would result in the death of comedy. In 2018, she changed her mind and now totally disagrees with creating characters like Long Duk Dong. The mindset and sensitivity of people today blows my mind. Taking offense to subjects such asinine. I can honestly say that I am so thankful I was able to experience two of the greatest decades of music and movies ever created before everything got polluted with excessive whining and lack of sense of humor.

Looking at the ages of all the actors Ringwald and Hapl were the perfect age both around the actual age of 16 when the film was made. The guy who played Jake was around 24 and Viggiano Mortensen would have been 26 which would have been far to creepy to play Ringwalds love interest. Hughes did ok with casting for most of his movies but sometimes he should have looked for younger. For example the breakfast club Ringwald and Hall again are fine but Sheedy, Estavez and Judd Nelson were close to their mid 20’s at the time. Also in Ferris Buller best friend Alan Rick was close to 30 years old playing a high school kid. These casting choices make Hall seem so young when in reality he was actually in high school

They keep judging everything by modern standards and yet what has modern standards produced in terms of comedy or romantic comedy? Nothing. It's all boring, unfunny and doesn't last the test of time. Sixteen Candles is still remembered and watchable so many years later, so proof that being politically correct doesn't work. Movies are escapism, they need to capture stereotypes, add and mould them but ultimately it's something to take you away from the toil of everyday life. Those seeking political correctness, especially in comedy, want the same toil to continue day after day.

Long dac dong is a hilarious character and I can't believe it causes any sort of outrage as this is a comedy right, all of the stereotypes are ramped up to 11 for laughs. But I come from a time when people had a sense of humour

It's pretty disturbing that Jake, who's presented as one of the heroes, leaves his blitzed out girlfriend Caroline with The Geek, and causally States that he could "Violate her ten different ways if he wanted to." Even worse, Caroline and the Geek are implied to have had sex offscreen, when she clearly couldn't consent, yet he ends up "getting her" in the end.

Even accounting for the "time period", this film makes Breakfast at Tiffany's, Dr. No, and others _woke_ by comparison. As well, just as Birth of a Nation (1918) was a racist film even then...

It's the fact it passed without critical comment and was seen as universally funny which says it all. It did not occur to filmmakers that Asian people do not want to be portrayed as stereotypical idiots.

It just didn't work out 'cause Viggo Mortensen went to Paramount under Ned Tanen, Roger M. Rothstein and Sherry Lansing to gave his first on-screen appearance in Peter Weir's first American picture, the Oscar winning "Witness" with Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis and more. Released in February 15, 1985 and became an ultimate box-office success that touched people's hearts, souls, lives and minds everyday.

Personally, I like this film. I think that I like John Hughes filmography as a whole. And yeah, this movie didn't age well. But that`s not important. We can`t judge a film or watch it based on our modern standards. And let`s be honest: our standards are not quite good either. So, when it comes to classic films, just turn on your suspension of disbelief and enjoy the film. It`s a classic. Period.

When "Sixteen Candles" was first developed at Universal under executive producer Jennings Lang and production executive Edward Muhl in the fall of 1980 after the firing of both Ned Tanen and Hilton A. Green, the studio chose John Hughes as both writer and director. A year later, both Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald were cast perfectly on the film. So does the rest of the entire cast who got along very well. The crew including composer Ira Newborn, costume designer Marilyn Vance, film editors Edward Warschilka, Freeman A. Davies, Scott Wallace, production designer John W. Corso, DP Bobby Byrne, legendary matte artist Albert Whitlock, casting director Jackie Burch and choreographer Dee Dee Wood were helped making "Sixteen Candles" one of 1984-1985's box office hits. Released on Friday, June 29, 1984. Both this along with "The Breakfast Club", "Weird Science" and "Uncle Buck" were very successful and profitable for Universal and Hughes Entertainment.

As if, I just watched this for the first time last night. That Long Duck Dong shit was hilariously offensive and I can't believe that anyone thought that was a good idea in any time period. @@calsnow6807 I never advocated for censoring art, which you can't even spell, genius. The same way that you can't censor art, you can't censor art criticism. If John Hughes is allowed to have his say and clown on Chinese people, why am I not allowed to have my say and say what I think about that, and that his views are problematic and bigoted? Are you a snowflake or something who can't handle criticism of movies you like?

*I remember enjoying this movie but even as a kid I found that "long duck dongs" name was offensive, the stereotyping was of the era, but what ticked me off (as a foreigner myself) was that Long was a smart kid who INSTANTLY dove head first into Sex, Booze, and Debauchery which even his american counterparts didn't resort to. In other words, what? "Foreigners are infant minded, and easily exploitable for the purposes of making a spectacle? Though the movie should be taken in the vane and light of the 80's (the video covered the disgusting date r^pe aspects) this movie was better than "Pretty in Pink" which has Molly Ringwald crushing on some preppy douche who was doing lines in the bathroom. (it's there go see it again).*

Sorry. Ringwald was right the first time. Political correctness has destroyed comedy. The long duck dong character is absolutely hilarious. Humor dictates that we all laugh at ourselves as well as each other. None of this is offensive material in the least nor is it insensitive to anyone. The fact that Ringwald changed her opinion and became woke makes her an idiot.
