WTF Happened to RANDY QUAID?

In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
This week we take a look at the strange journey of actor Randy Quaid, who has made a career out of being a goofy, obnoxious, yet affable character actor, occasionally dipping his toe into more serious fare. Brother to Dennis, Randy has followed in his brother's Hollywood footsteps, albeit with a lean into supporting roles and non-heroic types, but nonetheless leaving a lasting impression, particularly in films like INDEPENDENCE DAY, CHRISTMAS VACATION, QUICK CHANGE, DAYS OF THUNDER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and KINGPIN. In his later years, Quaid kept busy in Hollywood, but also found himself in trouble with the law and all sorts of other shenanigans that feel like they'd be part of a movie he's acting in. Nonetheless, we've enjoyed Quaid's antics onscreen (less so offscreen) and wanted to find out just WTF happened to him. Enjoy!

Randy drove into Hollywood from Texas in an old broken down truck with a few dollars and a load of raw talent and they rolled out the red carpet for the the country boy immediately. He brought his little brother into the business and he is great success. Randy has worked with all the greats: everyone Jack Nicholson to Heath Ledger. Barbara Streisand, Rod Stieger, Richard Dreyfus, Charles Bronson, Robert Duvall, Marlon Brando, Arther Penn, chevy chase, Bill Murry, Randy is a kick ass actor and millions of Americans miss the guy and want him back.

I knew that from a long time ago - when I watched The Long Riders (1980) ( www.imdb.com/title/tt0081071/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 ) which is a movie about the James gang with the Keaches (James and Stacy), Carradines (David, Keith and Robert) and Quaids (Randy and Dennis). With the Guest brothers (Christopher and Nicholas) thrown in for good measure. I think the first time I saw Randy in a movie was Midnight Express (1978). At that stage I'd never heard of Dennis.

If he's crazy, then why is his wife staying with him and more-or-less agreeing with him? Is she "crazy", also? Did they both magically go "crazy" together somehow? I know people keep looking at Randy, but it isn't it really the couple that should be looked at? Why is she being perceived as just "tagging along" with him? Maybe she went crazy and Randy is just doing what she thinks he should do? All sorts of possibilities here (none which I agree with, because I don't want to assume anything), but my overall point is "why" is SHE being ignored over and over again? I would rather watch a video discussing the both of them, because she is either a huge part of this, or for some reason(s) just tagging along when she could be having a normal life with someone else.

Indeed, Quaid has been in truly great films. When he's ranting crazily it's bizarre to keep in mind he was in *The Last Picture Show* and Brokeback Mountain* ...He has one of the weirdest filmographies of...anyone. I would say though it's a mistake to assume "every actor" is somehow tied to nefarious, deep, dark shit "behind the scenes". I'm connected with the film industry, and I have several close friends who are actors. It's a world made up of professionals, just like any other. Corruption and exploitation can potentially be found in any workplace anywhere, whether it's a brokerage firm, a bakery, or a film set. The only intrinsic difference between the film industry and any other is the inherent publicity surrounding it. A film set can be an amazing place where artists produce great work. Or it can be a pressure cooker where people are ruthlessly exploited. Just like any hospital, or school, or any other workplace. It depends on the individuals present. Not everyone making films is a monster.
