At last! As architects we are already fully trained to take on the challenge of creating zero-carbon buildings. Personally we were taught about sustainable design (not that it was necessarily called that then) when I was at university in the late 70s and early 80s. A actual job in the sector would be very welcome :-)

That's interesting, as someone who's in the early stages of planning a refit, I found it really hard to find an architect. It seems there were some county-level organisations for specialist refit co-ordinators, but they had their funding cut recently.

I tell you, my frustration at the lack of incentives for tech companies. We need more investment from car, eco and energy companies. This post Brexit country should be jumping on any opportunity to make us a tech tour de force.

Honestly, talent is just one small part. What we need are curiosity, and dedication to execute the visions of the engineers and scientists.

Elon Musk said he regretted hiring people based entirely on their talent. He wished he had taken into account good-heartedness.

What you need is people who dare to stick their neck out and take some risc and chase an idea. We are all taken hostage by huge mortgages or highvrents and other costs you can't get out of. You need to stick to your day job for 40+ hours a week and can't afford to just quit and chase a great idea.

One of the best and fastest ways possible to recruit people into any jobs we NEED people to do would be to make it financially worthwhile to SHARE those jobs. There is absolutely no shortage of people in this world the problem is we just have far too many people who are working hard all day FOR money but doing nothing we need, or in many cases even want people to do.

There are two new high pirced housing estates near me in Wiltshire and most of them dont have solar , only a few with 2 small panels

Planning regs need a thorough root & branch makeover. It shouldn't matter whether it's residential, commercial or industrial construction, appropriate levels of insulation, glazing, self-generation of energy & storage should form important fundamentals of any design and planning application before being granted planning permission.

There was a law that was going to happen that all new houses had to have solar, until Boris Johnsons government in all its wisdom decided to cancel that a few years ago. 👍

@@timscott3027 Yes, I remember that. Always gets me why general window sizes in the UK are so small that you end up having to have the lights on in the daytime; a far from energy efficient practice. Anybody would think that the window tax (1696 - 1851) hadn't been repealed after all.

Pay is so low in engineering it's not surprising there is a shortage of qualified talent. I've spent 5 years working in solar, coursemates from my engineering course that converted to law or went into accountancy or finance are on 2-2.5 times what I earn. Add to that the complete lack of respect for engineering, especially renewables (none of my doctor friends have to justify the existence of their sector or see it rubbished by know nothing pundits) and it's not an attractive proposition for high achieving graduates. The saving grace is that people working in renewables tend to be kind and caring, and are all really motivated to make the world a better place.

Totally agree. Engineering, at all levels seems to always be the poor relation, not just in monetary terms either. Poor working conditions, inadequate equipment, and unsociable hours, and if, like me, you're "on the tools" you have to supply them yourself. I used to be an aircraft technician, but at less money than a council street cleaner, I walked away. About 15 years ago I applied to be a service technician for a startup VAWT company, they had a fantastic office, in Camberwell, really nice it was, but on offer was just18 grand, and get this, no company vehicle, they expected me to travel by train, or my own car, for which I could claim fuel costs. Luckily I didn't get the job. I believe they went bust not long after.

@@iangregory3719 To be fair, council street cleaners should get paid a decent, livable wage. Without them, society soon starts looking very different.

@@LCOF very true......but in my situation it was £13,700 for aeroplane technician, £18 grand for street sweeper....and if they screw up, nobody dies.

Robert, you shore a flat panel of PV. Where go to have development with 250 houses in North Coast NSW with 30,000m2 Tractile PV on the roofs. The thing where going have 1st stage we have 2400m2 Arctech Solar trackers of PV. All that PV will be stored in the 1st stage Tesla batteries storage farm, 14.4MW/hrs, expanded to 28.8MW/hrs by 2025. All we got to do first have the team design and council approve the developments. All thing happen, we onsite by mid June 2023. We need heaps of qualified peoples, first.

An energy efficient home or business is more comfortable and saves money in the long run. Solar energy on your roof combined with battery storage can make people more independent from the grid and natural gas supplies. Add solar and supplemental electric heating or a heat pump for home or business heating.. All big box stores and manufacturing sites can support solar energy on their roofs or parking lots. Added insulation, double or triple glaze windows, energy efficient doors, energy efficient heating and cooling systems, energy efficient appliances, LED lighting, smart thermostats, solar panels combined with battery storage and a electric vehicle charger in the garage or car park. People are too focused on the short term costs and miss out on long term savings and comfort. Blower door testing and air sealing are under appreciated tools.Even if you have money to burn you should not waste it. Climate Change will impact everyone. Leave a better future for your children and grandchildren. Join in and speak up for the future of the planet

I’m trained as a architectural technologist, but this new year I’ve taken on a new role as SAP assessor, i’ve only worked on a few dozen projects so far, all want the minimum that you get away with to get a pass on CO2, when” SAP 10” comes in later this year I can’t see anything passing without solar and heat pumps.

@@IDann1 That good but I got a feeling the housing industry will find a way unless SAP 10 rigorously enforce, more likely the government will use the latest recession and economic troubles to delay them.

I am trying to work out where to go to learn to make batteries, batteries research. I have a PhD in Nanotechnology but due to a combination of anxiety issues and living in the middle of nowhere I have been unemployed for 3 years.

You have access to the internet. Start from there. Form your own research startup and take it from there.

@@LCOF this runs into the same issue I currently have with my inability to get a job, my complete lack of a network. Plus not having a millionaire father to introduce me to investors. I can find the basics online but, chemical knowledge is usually not given out freely on the internet. Plus new battery technology tends to be proprietary.

It's obviously a fantastic thing to recruit for " new energy". What concerns me is what is going on at a political level. The legacy electricity generation / fossil fuel industries are subsidised worldwide to the tune of $5trillion annually. There are obviously powerful lobbyists at work, and in the states, areas where solar is penalised by the local utility companies. It strikes me that lobbyists "with teeth" are needed to help redress the balance - the legacy industries will not give up without a fight...even if renewables are far cheaper and more desirable...

Getting house builders in cold Canada to totally change their construction techniques and methods is not easy. They are stuck in the 1950s. Government must draw a line in the sand and force new efficiencies on this industry. But they make so much money now, the builders don't want to change.
