Hey Jocko. Learned about you from listening to Goggins videos. I was on the streets a year ago, was in the hospital 3 times, one for a nervous breakdown and I'm facing my past head on. I'm gonna be that guy 9 months from now that says I turned sh*t around... even if it takes 5 years. I got this!! Cheers on making me a stronger man!

Medical school makes an attempt to formalize the “informal training“ that you’re referring to. The first two years of medical school are done in the classroom and “paper testing” then the student takes step one of the board exams (of the three steps). The third and fourth year of medical school are “in the field training” (closely supervised) in the major specialties and subspecialties of interest for the individual medical students. The grading systems for the informal training received in third and fourth year of medical school are much more subjective than the “number grade system“ of the first two years of medical school. I agree with the thesis that informal training is more important than the formal training in medical school. In fact, all there was before medical schools was apprenticeship after some general scientific formal education.

Thanks Jocko for digging. When I heard you read from Marshalls book and I heard the phrase "it was decided" or whatever the phrase was to displace the responsibility from the ranking Officer it raised my eyebrow, easy to know skulduggery was afoot. Thank you for naming and vindicating Kirby, and vindicating the men who fought to their very last breath to repulse the attack. I pity the Captain, like you said, when the boss was gone he could have left a 60 behind and a couple of extra guys. I'm sure that he was tortured til the end by it. God bless those guys. Thank you

Joe Ronnie Hooper (August 8, 1938 - May 6, 1979) was an American who served in both the United States Navy and United States Army where he finished his career there as a captain. He earned the Medal of Honor while serving as an army staff sergeant on February 21, 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was one of the most decorated U.S. soldiers of the war and was wounded in action eight times.

no point, its just a cool story. I went on a volunteer trip with a science project a few years ago and the goal was to get a bunch of wild sheep to stand still so they can tranq them. They spend hours trying to do this by following along behind them super slowly and carefully, while debating the best way to get them to do it. I spent hours trying to convince them to let me drive. In the end they finally let me ''guide the driver". Turns out going carefully was not the best way, herding was :). They thought it wouldn't work bc they're ''wild sheep". I've been watching my sheep dog (not the tiny ones, he;s not an ankle bitter, different type of breed) heard wild animals for years. It definitely works. Sheep, deer, any type of prey animal really...they have instincts which work well for hearding...that;s how hearding evolved. Its just that they call it hunting when wolves do it, but its the same root instinct. And I tried it out in real life, I know it works. Eventually they got the sheep, and tranqed one. It took hours of ''following" and about 15 min to ''herd". 5 of those minutes were spend with the lady with the gun asking the whole car if she should take the shot while the sheep grazed peacefully a few meters away. In nature sometimes things get done AFTER you ruffle feathers a little bit. I just thought it would be nice to share a perspective which is not war related. For guys like Jocko I suspect it may be a lot more important to be super ruffle-free. Maybe some people can't get away with inspirational/cute ruffling. :P probably.

and yes that's why I tend to prefer animals to people most days. Ppl are always confused. Animals are not. See the opening, take the opening. No regrets. I think that's why people love them so much. Gives everyone a break from the random junk in ther own heads. My only regret is that they don't speak. They communicate but not at the same level. For years all I wanted was to find more people just like my dog. I could live happily forever. The only reason why more dogs aren't like that is due to poor choices in human breeding. And they cheated themselves out of having amazing experiences right alongside with that idiotic choice. There is no way any human will ever be able to replace, at the same level, a really good instinctive, independent thinking dog. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. Not even one who follows orders better. Mine might be a lot more work to keep but its worth it. No other dog knows to stand their ground with a charging bear. The rest, its worth it.

Hey Jocko My girlfriend and I both work with dogs, and with them, you can’t really “fake it”, as they see through you. So even with the same dogs, in her case it works out better for her to be her own nice self who asks them to do things, while I’m the one who tells them to do things. With people, you can “fake it” more, but I still think there’s no ONE rule that works for EVERYONE. I think you have to absorb things and integrate them as best as possible into who you are and to who you’re dealing with, as people can sometimes also just read through you. So. I live abroad and only see my nephews twice a year for a total of about 10 days, and over the last 15 years, I’ve been kind of the “Uncle Jake” to my sister’s 2 sons (the youngest an outgoing kid, and the oldest a shyer kid), and having just had my first son, I thought I’d read “Way of the Warrior Kid”. In it, I found one thing that I thought could be misinterpreted by some people, and that I often found wouldn’t work for me with my 2 nephews, and might actually make things worse both short term and long term, and that was Uncle Jake point blank telling Marc what to do until Marc would simply resign to it. I know that, like with the dogs, it depends on who you are as an “Uncle Jake” and on who your subject is as a “Marc”, but I don’t think most parents have that specific dynamic with their kids, sometimes simply due to them being the parent and not the uncle or the teacher or the neighbour etc Like you say in the book, sometimes the thought of doing something, is scarier than actually doing it. So I found that with my nephews, instead of “telling” them what to do, I would suggest something to them that I knew they didn’t want to do, to see how they reacted to the thought of it (and sometimes I would do that a few times over a course of a few days) and if I saw that I couldn’t talk them into it in the time frame I had with them, if it was something that I knew they weren’t going to be traumatised by and would actually enjoy once they were doing it (like picking them up and putting them in the pool that is just at their chest level), I would just put on my nicest atitude possible and physically put them in the situation, and more often than not, they would throw a tantrum, which would turn into nervous laughter, which would turn into just plain laughter. And even though it wasn’t them initiating the activity and “choosing to face their fear and overcoming it”, the next day, they would still be nervous about walking into the pool, but me talking them into it would now work, and every day it would become easier, and by the 2nd or 3rd day this summer, my youngest nephew was now dragging me to go to the pool for one last swim before dinner, after we’d spent the day at the beach, and with my oldest nephew the previous summer,we spent about 45 mins swimming about 250ft out onto the sea where there was a big rock we climbed and rested on and then made our way back. And this built a trust towards me and within themselves that made it work for me to suggest to them (or ideally, them telling themselves) overcoming other “fears” just by talking them through it. They would now no longer have to be “pushed” into things. I know that like any approach, it has its flaws, but for me it has worked out the best. What do you think? All the best P.Alves
@andrabook8758
@andrabook8758 3 жыл бұрын
well yes, showing is definitely better than telling especially for dogs :). I have a dog that's totally show don't bother telling. He's one of the most stubborn creatures alive honestly. Its not that he doesn't get words bc he does its just that he's primarily intuitive and highly independent. If he;s in ''excited mode" hand gestures work SO much better than words. And he's definitely got big dog brain. When he was younger I would try to get him to do those puzzles with treats in them. I spend hours on this stuff. At some point I figured he's safe to be left alone with them, and he;s totall going to keep playing by himself. Literally 5 seconds later the puzzle was in pieces and the treats all eaten. Why play the game when you can just break it and get the treats, right? Lol :). So when ppl use the metaphor of dogs as something that obeys blindly....all I can say is: what dog is that? O_o Bc mine does nothing but challenge everything, and tries to get his own way every time there is the slightest opening! He's awesome! >:D i wish my blog still worked so I can send you there to read the stories, but sadly that's one of the things I lost when internet crapped out. Keeps crashing. He's giant and you should see him with bears. We got routines going now and everything. He's giant pain in the butt attitude may not work great with store puzzles but in the real world, he stopped a bear charging down the hill, so I can get my butt in the car. It was awesome and no one can really train that. I sure as hell never did. That's instinct. Pure thousands of years of instinct.

Huh, Jocko and Leif went to the land of my birth. Boy I wish I could have introduced him to some rural Zulus and have them invite him to a traditional stick fight, their martial art that I grew up with and learned how to take being a loser well. When you saw a Zulu wearing a leopard skin in a photo from the 1800’s, it meant he’d personally killed that leopard with his assagai (spear) himself - you read any book about old school European hunters and the two animals they were most afraid of were leopard and Cape buffalo.

Wonderful suggestion! how about we (I mean you, but trying to be all inclusive), provide some actual support for innovation. I watched NBC, its at 500,00 deaths in the US alone. How about instead of just talking about all these concepts we apply some of them to the current house on fire problems :D. Not that talking is not great. Its fantastic. When the house is not on fire. When it is on fire, I tend to prefer putting it out as opposed to deep conversations about civilization. Its called the fight or flight effect...not the fight, flight or chat effect. I get the concept of cool under pressure. Just not 100% sure that I support "so cool I'm dead" under pressure.

@@davidoftheforest3822 if i stopped watching the news i wouldn't know that the CDC is now saying its ok to gather without masks as long as everyone says they got vaccinated. still: no longitudinal data, no real way to make sure they're not lieing, and no concrete data on variants yet. How is that a workable model? Nobody thinks they should ask companies to just provide that data or track it. Nope. God forbid we should instill any accountability there. I don't get how people are able to just sit back and not care at all. What is everyone waiting for? divine intervention?

All I can wonder is: is Mando from the Mandolorian based on Jocko?

Jocko you should partner with Ben Shapiro and the daily wire to produce your children’s books into an animated series. I think it would be a good capitalist move and a lot parents would love to have this option in their quiver for their kids.

I guess we can no longer download Jokco podcasts at Jocko's website (this eposode) without paying for some kind of service package. This platform change is highly disappointing and will deprive people from having Jocko content that can be accessed off line. I guess all good things come to an end...
