I am so glad I discovered these podcasts. I got really low and I did not want to give up and give in. I found his Good video and it called to me more than so many other motivating videos. I wish I could have learned these lessons 20 years ago. But I know now and I can't wait to see who I am in 20 years from now. If you are young and you have found these videos embrace these lessons and begin. Change your lives NOW. Today. You will not regret it ever.

Some tips from current college student that took years off after high school (it looks like ass, thanks youtube formatting): 1) some people just don't feel the vibe, and there's some merit to really forcing yourself to just suck it up for your own good. But don't underestimate the power of little glimpses of motivation. I went back because one day I just felt really hungry to LEARN again, and critically think and discuss interesting shit. Most of the time, I'd come here, listen to some deep podcasts or read some articles or something. Fuck that. Right then and there, start putting together that to-do list of requirements you need to meet to go to the school you want. Roll with that momentum your mind is giving you, don't let that window of opportunity pass you up. Get in the shit and get involved while you're feeling up to it. Once you're invested, it's harder to make up excuses and drop the ball. 2) Like Jocko said, walk in there like a fucking savage, ready to devour every bit of information, any assignment, all that. Sit in the front row, ask questions, add to the information your professor's throwing out there if you know something that wasn't mentioned, ask questions the moment you lose your train of thought/understanding. In group work and presentations, make eye contact with everyone, speak confidently and project your voice as well as your character and charisma. You'll get better grades, and most likely better ass, honestly. That hot chick on the other side of the room is going to love it. So will your teacher, just in a different way. 3) Make some time between classes or after class, even just a single hour, and knock out some homework or studying at the library on campus, or a picnic table, or the coffee shop across the street. Don't let yourself leave campus until you know you've put in some work on something that needs to get done. No putting it off until 9pm later or tomorrow, where you're at home and have other options of shit to waste your time. Only if you absolutely HAVE TO. Knock those obligations out early. 4) Get organized. If you need to, follow a SOP when you get into a class and get setup or before you leave. Bring the right tools, know what you'll need, have it all out in front of you. Look up Cornell Notes, use that format, take a shitton of notes from class and in readings. Organize your notes by date or by subject or whatever works for you. All my professors offer their lecture slides and some notes online, but my belief is that I shouldn't need them. I should be so on-point in class and in my own time that I already know what needs to be known, unless a specific thing eludes me or a certain article linked online needs to be used for an assignment. Supply yourself with everything you could possibly need for studying in the most organized, efficient manner for yourself. 5) Enjoy it. Don't throw yourself into a major just because it'll pay well. If you're not motivated to be there, you're going to be passive about your education. Because of that, you're not going to be engaged, you're not going to be putting in 110% effort daily, you won't WANT that knowledge. Pursue something you know you're going to want to push yourself far in. You'll set yourself apart in your classes, and in the field once you graduate. The person who wanted it more learns more, knows more, does more, and earns more.

I grew up rough made a bunch of mistakes. The only brootherhood i ever felt was in prison where we engaged in hands on cqb with razors and homemade swords. When you have each others back thru hard time like that it builds a bond that i have never felt before. I have had the enemies blood on my hands and my brothers blood on my hands. I have held my brothers hand while he bled out. Thank you so much jocko for showing that a bond like that can exist in a positive way with a positive goal. I really wish i had chosen to be a soldier instead of a gangster. I have the WILL i was born with it. I really could have been a good soldier. It may seem strange but i actually seem to have got positive male leadership or motivation or whatever you want to call it. I know one thing for sure it really hits home what jocko preaches. Since i started listening to more than just the stories of guns fights and heros ( which i love) and started listening to the message i have really turned things around. I quit talking to everyone in my life that breaks the law. I have got a legit job in a brake factory and im super fucking proud of my accomplishments. My work ethic at my job is unmatched by anyone there. I know im a 7 time felon and i am starting at the bottom. Im just going in there everyday like its a fight for my life. No one will out work me. And while everyone else take brakes i work. While other people gossip i work. I stack rotors and caliper like they are on fire. The first to weeks my hands bled threw my gloves everyday. Thank you jocko for helping me i shall remain true to my mission and do my absolute best to maintain my SELF discipline. My mission is to get noticed for how hard i work and be hired on permanently not just a my current temp status. And my long term life goal is to own a house with a pond. And to anyone out there that reads this and thinks that being labeled a felon defines your life please know you can beat that label if you work hard no fucking slack ever. We must out work those around us. My dream though is that if pot becomes legal they could reverse my felonies and i could hunt ducks with my dad again. For right now though nothing in my life is more important than how many parts i stack tomorrow. I will become faster than the machine that makes them and they will have no choice but to hire tje big tattooed guy thats always drenched with sweat.

Catching up late and trying to whip through your podcasts, Jocko and Echo.. Always excellent. As an English teacher, your philosophy on the topic of how to work the college game is on point. I also preach that all day to my students in the civilian world and to the units in my military world and hope they catch on and pay attention All about time management.. This was a hell of a podcast from start to finish. Thank you for putting this out there, Sir. Great one. Hackworth to Jocko. Solid.

For my Army MIOBC class, I did my 20-page Battle Analysis paper on the battalion-size operation COL Hackworth did towards the end this book. Got a 95% on the paper. I even put together a series of graphic SITEMPS of his operation (was prior MI SGT). I had always wanted to get a hold of Hackworth, or his organization to send a copy of the paper to. - CPT (O-3E), MI (RET)

I’m a public school teacher. My “soldiers” are a mix of kids who have some idea of what they want from their future and those who are there only because they have to be. The temptation to be the popular teacher and allow expectations to drop is probably the biggest obstacle I face in terms of problems I can do something about. This hits home. Thank you.

I had often wondered about the change in the military between what I saw going on as an artilleryman in 1990 and what I have seen in the modern day. This made it clear to me. It felt like a culture of resistance to play-acting soldier. You could see the leftover attitude from the Viet Nam era. There were mentions of lifers even then. The crucible of 2001 seems to have burned away many of the impurities of attitude and created unity of focus. Modern leadership seems like the best changes in the military since the recalibrations after World War I. Drive on!

Great Episode!! Concerning the question at 28:00 (who would you recommend as mentors to model yourself after?) my advise is to think of yourself as an artist and think of your life as your work of art which amounts to a sum total of many many decisions. You are free to choose your influences and those decisions are a major factor in who you become. I say this because all artists--even the most unique ones--constantly imitate each other but nevertheless the greatest ones distinguish and differentiate themselves the most. So my answer is that those decisions are for you and you alone and they add up to make you who you are.

@Alfador42
@Alfador42 8 жыл бұрын
I think Jocko might be more of a «hippie» than you give him credit for. He doesn't seem like the type of guy to fall for the «liberal» versus «conservative» trap. That's a dichotomy and I think he'd tell us to free our minds if we were too eager to lock him up into either of those categories.
@DevilFrog61
@DevilFrog61 8 жыл бұрын
+Dee Xiao Long I hear what you're trying to say, but it's pretty simple...one side likes the constitution of the United States and the other could care less about the US, and actually views the US as the problem in the world. Being a hippie doesn't mean you are free thinker, anyone can do that....being a hippie means you don't follow rules, norms, and regulations...in other words, you avoid discipline like the plague...I think it's safe to say Jocko isn't a hippie and since he swore an oath to the constitution he'd probably be at least center right in terms of politics.
@Alfador42
@Alfador42 8 жыл бұрын
DevilFrog61 two sides of the same coin. Each side will never be able to fully grasp the other and yet, they are part of the same reality. Don't forget that the constitution was written on hemp paper. Your idea of what is a hippie is the result of your outlook from your own side of the coin and you're probably not as stereotypical as a conservative as a hippie thinks you are.
@DevilFrog61
@DevilFrog61 8 жыл бұрын
+Dee Xiao Long lol you can say that, but in the end of the day, I don't quit my job to go have hallucinogenic orgies in open fields for the rest of my life....hippies are fuckin idiots who spat on veterans coming home from war...if they saw Jocko in uniform they would be disrespectful and hateful. That's what a hippie is and there's no doubt that we will forever be burdened by the ignorance and bitching that lives on from those days....I realize that I have my personal beliefs, and I don't expect people to be like me in any way except for having respect for the troops and our constitutional rights.... That's it. Some people care about that and others don't. It's not an opinion. That's the situation. The rest is unimportant details.
