I wouldve respected it if it was to my face, but it was to each other two feet away from me. The thing that gets me is it was multiple ppl. That hurt. And ive asked myself constantly if im the problem. I quit there and im looking for a new gym. Thoughts?

Your school was and is absolutely the problem. Who cares what you do in your private life as long as you're not harming yourself or others? Plus, you're there to learn and practice martial arts which has nothing to do with your sexuality. Find a school that realizes these concepts and treats you with respect.

I keep training with inexperienced people who tell me they like getting beat up and that they want to be humble. It's weird and stupid. If you're humble, you don't have to tell people how humble you are and you don't go around telling others to be humble. And if you like getting beat up, you're misguided and you're putting yourself in danger and patting yourself on the back for it.

Like jocko said, the point is to win, learn techniques and get better. You'll get humble naturally. You can't train yourself to be humble. You'll simply realize your limitations or you'll deny them. The culture of telling others to be humble is getting out of hand. It's annoying and stupid.

The other red flag with the "I like getting beat up" is that it doesn't give you confidence that they'll respect your body either. I tend to be very cautious with those people, and even in the cases where I dominate them, I don't "beat them up" to kind of show them that getting someone to submission is not the same as beating them up, or that you don't have to be explosive and careless to apply pressure and advance your position or sub.

Maybe they're phrasing it wrong without realizing it. "Getting beat up" to them could actually mean losing a roll or sparring session and seeing they've made mistakes. Not making excuses for these people though

This is bs!! I only train at non competitive jj schools where everyone gets a belt at the same time, no submissions, no dominant positions, no contact, No one loses everyone wins and trophies are handed out after every class.

Jocko do you think Jujitsu is better than Judo for self defense?

I think an effective judoka can more quickly end a fight One hip throw into concrete is game over for anyone Where extended periods on the ground in bjj might be more dangerous if it’s not a 1 on 1 confrontation But any is going to great for self defence

I’ve trained judo and nogi jiujitsu for about three years so far. Personally I’d recommend doing both dude. If you can find a gym or dojo that offers bjj or nogi and a wrestling or judo class go for it! If I had to choose only one, I’d go with nogi jiujitsu because there aren’t as many rules. In judo you can’t grasp the legs for a takedown anymore because of the new rule set (which I think is absolutely ridiculous) whereas jiujitsu allows any kind of takedown/sweep but depending on the gym you choose, (meaning if the school is more oriented to wrestling and MMA vs guard playing and sport bjj), you might not train takedowns very frequently which is a major issue as far as self defense is concerned. I hope this helped you!

@@mr.freeze2681 I´m both a Judo and BJJ (Gi and Nogi) guy. Hip trows and many Wrestling and Judo take downs are part of the curriculum of every decent BJJ school. Considering that, If I had to choose one, BJJ would be by far the best choice.

Jocko you should talk more about current events or just subjects that are interesting that will bring different groups of people to your podcast. Expand your podcast brotha. You have the military, motivation, mindset, skills to have as a human. But now i think you should get new subjects to discuss or different guest. Maybe talk about the universe. Marjuana. The border. Other countrys wars or problems.

Wow! I've only come across one smarmy little shit and he was a blue belt. A very "pretty man" who thought he was Gods gift to women. He'd come and go and eventually quit. In my opinion Jujitsukas should be measured by one standard....There ability and skill on the mat. It helped me beat alcoholism and bought to the surface parts of me which I'm proud of. It literally has something to offer everyone. Injuries normally occur from white belts going to hard to quick, very rarely from higher belts. I'm a huge believer in strong foundations and basics. After nearly 7 years i still drill basics and polish each section of basic techniques. The flowing and relaxed heaviness will come naturally. Good points and post Jocko. Cheers from down under.

Thank you.....Great why do I look up to you as in Ju Jitsu , so in life , jerks , arseholes, whatever or however you describe them, they live a lie! Some great man said, "Humility is the right fear of God" , for me this means conventionally in the so-called real world, "i" exist and tend to take up a position to defend myself from the realization that I am not the man, I am not the big I-am, i am not----, in other words, "me" operating out of my little world view isn't right ,it is always and will be always a tiny little self-created cosmos, God laughs and says in a very quiet whisper "who are you .....Little man" ? Who are you to dictate to, to impose on and interfere with others, who are you to abuse and use them ....Little man ? Let me demonstrate then a terrible thing happens, the big little man is someone no longer. "See little man " ! Now learn to be humble please, otherwise worse will happen, the "man" gets up in a daze thinking he was dreaming and walks on. God Bless R

Send the arrogant jerks to a Krav Maga studio, using jiu jitsu on 3 attackers at once will build some humility for the B-Jay-Jay instructor. The groin WILL be restomped! Unless the instructor uses switchblade-jitsu.

No way I'm going half speed with any adult. We learned as teenagers in puberty that there were no more play or sport fights -- it's all fun until somebody gets hurt, which is usually real quick. Just avoid aggressive people, and gyms or dojos where they hang out. Being able to win a fair fight is meaningless. Nobody fights fair. There's more than one reason to choose to fight, wrestle, whatever you call it. One is because some like hurting other people. Maybe that's only 5%, but I suspect more. One is sense of insecurity. Maybe that's only 33%, but I suspect more. If somebody says they train in martial arts, I avoid them. Sooner or later they will want to show you.
