Ireland Unfiltered: Dion Fanning talks to Joe Brolly about RTE, growing up in Derry and peace.
Listen here: bit.ly/31iAdXk
For our debut Ireland Unfiltered live show, Dion is joined by GAA pundit Joe Brolly. Brolly discusses his career as a sports analyst and the culture of fear sweeping RTÉ. Have we gone too far with balance in sports commentary? Brolly also discusses the darkness and demons he faced following his kidney donation and life growing up in Derry during The Troubles.

Wow as an Irish Man living in Australia I learnt so much about the GAA in this interview from a truly passionate wonderful human being Joe who is just brilliant. Community, empathy and strong moral values. I hope Joe gets sleep and works through his CPTSD childhood issues which plague him as he doesn’t deserve to suffer in anyway, and those that are near him, look after this man he’s fragile and longs for his community. Hug him mind him cherish him, and listen to him.

There is no bit of devilment in Jo Ca and I would say too politically correct about who says what on the show. Joe is (and the viewers are) better off really moving away from the sanitised version of the Sunday Game. At least Michael Lyster would throw a few grenades in and leave them at it. Bill O H used to do the same thing in the soccer. Boring times ahead methinks.

Joe is seemingly a man of contradictions himself- warm, measured and thoughtful in a one-on-one interview like this (and also capable of great generosity, as his kidney donation shows) but caustic, personal and bombastic when he gets near a laptop or a TV studio, especially towards amateur athletes who generally give lots and take little in return. He is also a bit self-serving here when it comes to the RTÉ stuff; they stood him down because he alleged that the ref in the All-Ireland senior football final had been influenced by a media campaign by one of the teams, not because he was controversial per se.

Joe isn't a fan of Joanne Cantwell, and neither am I. She got the job solely because of her gender, is the truth.

is the truth? Don't think your opinion constitutes the truth...in my opinion she's far better than what went before her! But hey, everyone entitled to one and all that...

I have to say that I usually find Brolly (Whilst his time as an analyst on the Sunday Game) a complete dose of a man without any sense of decorum. However! I found him to be completely compelling in this Interview. I think I will have to revaluate my opinion on him. From a Donegal Man.
