The people who claim Hopkins won are delusional. There are only two reasons somebody would make such an obviously ridiculous statement. One is that they are simply haters. The other is that they are fanboys of B-Hop.

wattuneed your opinion on this match is diabolical. you're not watching the same fight as everyone else. a fight isn't a hugging/kissing contest. you got to turn up and fight not turn up go backwards and hold all night.

I agree Hopkins landed some cleaner punches and more spectacular punches, but the scoring doesn't define how cleanly they appear, only that they land to score. Calzaghe landed twice as many punches so naturally should have won. If the rules had been applied, Hopkins would have had several points deducted and then would have fared less well in the fight when he couldn't hold or use his head, or continued to do so and been disqualified.
@riceeater79
@riceeater79 4 жыл бұрын
@@antonjames2804 what ACTUALLY happened in the fight was that Hopkins nullified the majority of Joe's flurry slaps with counters of crisp straights rights and hooks then tied him up in the inside and worked in dirty boxing in the inside while turning him and popping Joe with jabs and Straights in the outside. It's called a game plan novice and it was Joe's job to solve it but he never really could. Hop won the fight but lost on the score cards because of the "white boy" comment before the fight. That's all that happened.

Very close fight. Hopkins pulled all the tricks of the trade out mainly because he had to ! Hopkins style may be obnoxious but its effective and i cannot deny admiring what a truly great fighter he was and given his age really remarkable. For me the verdict hinged on the last round and i gave to Joe but i would not argue with those that give this to Hopkins either to be fair!

B-hop the only boxer I know that was successful at adding the rough housing of a real street fight to his style and its has been very effective. Like when he he duck his head or make you think he ducking his head completely and it be looking like he falling into you with that over hand right, and it kind of catch you off gaurd thats some slick ass shit you see in a street fight, its like how a nigga take off on a nigga after you've made up your mind if he come any closer, or he say one more thing

I didn't see this fight until now. I don't like watching Hopkins' fights it's like looking at a garbage truck...gets the job done but really ugly and smells bad. If you were judging his fights as a boxing fan, you'd have to take two points from him every round for holding and hitting, butting, rabbit punching, for every one point for landing a hard clean punch. Calzaghe gets this one for me, because Hopkins' style makes it too difficult for me to score in his favour. Calzaghe should have taken the fights with these contenders much much earlier in his career, even if he had to come over by ocean liner.

@rohanjones1000
@rohanjones1000 4 жыл бұрын
Waiting till someone is old enough to outgass isnt really clever its closer to cowardice, though I'd not call a boxer a coward ever. Round 1 and the next five where Hopkins constantly outboxes Joe, was the pattern had they fought younger. Thats said you are quite right that the dirty hopkins started getting it back when he was in his 40s, with Calzaghe just barely outpointing him, Dawson smashing him up and Kovalev playing with him not to mention Smith.
@checkandbalance2903
@checkandbalance2903 4 жыл бұрын
Spot on. Hopkins was still good in his 40s but people overlook that he was a very beatable fighter. Dawson dominated him as did Kovalev. Even shoddy Jean Pascal took him to a draw. In actuality Hopkins was a .500 fighter at that point. He had some big wins left in him but he also dropped a bunch of fights. Calzaghe barely made it past him..if Calzaghe was truly an ATG I would expect a cleaner win here. I’m VERY VERY skeptical of Calzaghe and his tendency to catch big names in the downside

1. It shouldn't have been allowed either way. 2. It would've made zero difference in the Hatton vs Floyd fight. Hatton and Floyd could've fought 10 times and Hatton would likely lose all 10; super-lightweight or welterweight. 3. Hopkins was always allowed to do that stuff, for some reason or another, including against many American fighters.

“Show me an undefeated fighter and I’ll show a guy who’s never fought anybody.” -Whitey Bimstein. It amazes me how far out people will go to prop up an undefeated fighter. An undefeated record is impressive... but often wilts under examination. Calzaghe had an impressive run, but it's hard to give him credit for making so many obscure title defenses. He always took fights in which he knew he would have a stylistic or age advantage. He is like a more extreme version of Floyd Mayweather. A true fighter always takes on the best available opponents available; politics, money, and danger be damned. Sadly, this type of fighter is becoming rarer and rarer...

Dhinesh Nair,one question.Have you ever gotten into a ring?I boxed at the Olympic Auditorium in the 70's,Thursday night fights.I met Jerry Quarry,one of my trainers fought him and lost.Jerry was a helluva fighter.I put in the miles,the time in the gym.You ever knocked anyone out or been knocked out?Do you know what boxers are doing in their corners when their trainers are pouring water in their laps?Ok,so much for what I know about boxing. Bernard Hopkins is a smart fighter,but he's a fucking crybaby,he's a politician and he's dirty.I don't fault a fighter for being dirty,everybody is dirty.Like Cassamayor said,the day I stop fighting dirty is the day I don't have the heart for boxing.Hopkins just does it like a prima donna. Furthemore Hopkins has a smart trainer in his corner.You,Dhinesh,are the one that knows nothing about boxing.If you knew anything about boxing you'd know that the fine art of boxing,the science of boxing, allows fighters like Calzaghe,Malinaggi,hell even Ali to excel even though they don't have the power to land "solid plush punches" like you describe.However.I know damned well,one of Calzaghe's "bitch slaps" or Mayweather's "pillow punches" would knock you on your ass.People who run around calling people idiots are like the first person to smell a fart.Usually,he who smelt it dealt it.But as far as your assessement of the skill of Hopkins,take a look at his two fights with Dawson or Taylor.You know,the fights he said he thinks he won,right? Don't get me wrong,I have the utmost respect for Hopkins,Nazeem and Hopkins have been able to use their brains to beat fighters like Pavlik and Tarver.He's the epitomy of a ringer.But when you open your keyboard,you're showing the world what you DON'T know

Calzaghe lacked confidence plain and simple. He wanted some big names on his resume but wanted to make sure it was safe first. Hopkins was 43 and he had to fight by tying up and slowing down. He was at his peak at middleweight. He was never dominant at the higher weight. He lost nearly half his fights. Dawson beat him, Kovalev dominated him, Pascal dropped him and took him to a draw, Joe Smith sadlyKOd him. A fighters PRIME is over when he starts dropping fights to lesser fighter. That’s the case with Hopkins. And Jones who after winning 48 straight fights went 3-3 leading up to Calzaghe. Brutally KOd twice also.

You're forgetting 1 crucial thing .. Joe wasn't a big draw in America .. that's why he never had the chance to fight many American fighters .. bottom line the guy is quick .. elusive boxer .. always in shape .. and throws 3 times the punches that most fighters do .. nobody is going to have an easy fight with him .. fighters don't want to get losses on their record for little money

Bernard Hopkins was undisputed middleweight champion of the world and the best fighter in that division for twelve years;then in his forties won the light heavyweight title of the world twice. He is no coward. I actually thought Calzghe won this fight, many ringside observers including British ones didn't. Hopkins at 43 and years past his best gave Calzaghe as much problems as he could handle in this fight

Got no issues with the Welsh and I’m sure they are proud of Calzaghe but he kinda fought guys past there best and beating Roy Jobes in 2008 is a lot different than beating him in 2000. Jones and Hopkins we’re both fighting way past normal retirement ages and no one in America even watched those two fights. Americans stopped watching Jones after his second brutal KO loss.

@@checkandbalance2903 there is some truth to what you say. But Calzaghe dominated Europe before headi g out to the US and fighting Hopkins. But Hopkins s had just beat Winky Wright prior to fighting Calzaghe. Calzaghe was going to fight Chad Dawson until the US promoters put Calzaghe up against Hopkins and the mandatory fight with Jones. Hopkins was 42 at the time of the fight and Jones was 39. Calzaghe was 37 and 38. Calzaghe was up in age himself. Calzaghe beat both legends. And Calzaghe was an underdog. He came to the US to do it. Had he lost people would have claimed Calzaghe was overrated. But after he won they claim he won because the men he fought were not in their prime. It's a catch 22 with people who discredit Calzaghe. My take on this is the old Latin phrase. Vini vidi, vici. He came. He eyed both men. And he beat them.
@checkandbalance2903
@checkandbalance2903 4 жыл бұрын
Your facts are a tad off. Hopkins was 43 and Jones 39. Calzaghe was 35 and 36. And Jones wasn’t a mandatory fight. Besides age has little to do with prime. Jones was clearly shot. He LOST 3 of his 6 leading up to Calzaghe and hadn’t beaten a real opponent in many years. He was KOd by Tarver and Johnson. Two guys he would have easily beaten a few years earlier. Some fighters are washed up by 32.. it depends on the individual. You SEE that the fighter is washed up. Jones has visibly slowed. Hopkins was still a dangerous opponent but he was also 43. And Calzaghe was the FAVORITE in both those fights. He was not the underdog !!

@@checkandbalance2903 Let me amend some. Calzaghe was born in March 72. He was 36 when he fought Hopkins. Hopkins was 43. Born in Jan. 65. Jones was 39. When Calzaghe got off the plane he was a 2 to 1 underdog. Ring magazine also had Calzaghe as an underdog. The MGM , which hosted the fight bumped Calzaghe up to a 3 to 1 favorite.. That was mainly because of the demographic invasion of Brits that poured in the venue. Along came Sky sports that had Calzaghe a 5 to 1 favorite. But the American sports media had Calzaghe as the underdog. ESPN Sports news. They question the opponents that Calzaghe had compared to Hopkins. Moreover, Atlantic City odds maker had Hopkins a favorite. But since the venue was Vegas the Atlantic City odds picked up fewer bets. But here's how it worked. 85% of the boxing fans in the UK took Calzaghe. 7% took Hopkins and 8% were UNSURE. In Vegas 62% of the fans were from the UK. And nearly 100%of those fans were for Calzaghe. Along with 28% of the American fans. During the week of the fight sports writers questioned if Hopkins can endure the barrage of punches from the Younger Calzaghe. The Vegas odds maker assessed Calzaghe as the 3 to 1 favorite. Many in American sports media questioned that, pointing to the Ricky Hatton loss to Mayweather a few months earlier. Then after the fight Jones became the mandatory challenger if Calzaghe was to fight in the US again. Chad Dawson would be next Calzaghe then said win or lose with Jones that was his last fight. The American sports media claimed that Tito was a tougher boxer than Calzaghe.ESPN declared Calzaghes punches were slaps. Even Jones said this. Hopkins predicted that Jones would knock Calzaghe out. But all the bets came in for Calzaghe.The fight was at Mad.Sq. Garden. And the Brits poured in. Again Calzaghe was the betting favorite. Jones did get koed by Tarver and Johnson. Tyson got koed by Douglas, a tomato can. Lenox Lewis got koed twice . Joshua got koed by some fat dude. Most great champion recover. Calzaghe never lost.Mayweather never lost. They both beat great fighters to do that.

@@checkandbalance2903 Also, age would be a factor. You said most boxers fall apart after 32.Not too many boxers fight after 40. And to make it to 36 undefeated is so rare. Hopkins won the first 3 Next 2 A \a draw then Calzaghe catches up. and slowly starts out working Hopkins, Hopkins gets in a few clean counter punches and a few harder punches every now and again but his work rate just fell off. Clutching and holding. Hopkins fought a great extremely boring fight and it was close but Other than the very impressive first round that sticks in peoples minds it was Joe dominating the fight. I had it a bit closer but I think they got the right man winning. I have it 112 Calzaghe to 109 Hopkins. Father time caught up to him. and his counter punching style did not work, too much holding. Bit of a rough match and not that interesting.

To people who are capable of being objective and not watch a fight scoring with their heart and personal biasness, it's clearly obvious that Calzaghe won this fight handedly. Other than the flash knockdown by B-hop in the first round, Joe beat him to the punch and outworked him for the remainder of the fight. Calzaghe easily won 8 rounds and possible as much as 10 rounds. I had it 9 rounds to 3 - 116-111 including the knockdown. Easy win for Joe Calzaghe.

nah, I disagree. I would say the fight was, as the commentator himself said, very difficult to judge. I myself think if you are truly unbiased, you would have to score the fight a draw, or basically, inconclusive. yea, joe was throwing more punches, but bernard was throwing a lot more effective punches, and was in fact slipping and rolling a lot of joes punches. extremely close fight.

what ACTUALLY happened in the fight was that Hopkins nullified the majority of Joe's flurry slaps with counters of crisp straights rights and hooks then tied him up in the inside and worked in dirty boxing in the inside while turning him and popping Joe with jabs and Straights in the outside. It's called a game plan novice and it was Joe's job to solve it but he never really could. Hop won the fight but lost on the score cards because of the "white boy" comment before the fight. I am not sure you watch or see in boxing matches. Ward throws no punches? Rea;;y like he threw no punches against Mikkel Kessler or Carl Froch or Arthur Abraham. He won the super six barely losing a round much less losing a fight. Calzaghe was a very good boxer but he spent most of his career avoiding fighting the best fighters around whereas Ward has only ever fought the best fighters and beaten them all by some margin. Calazghe barely beat a 43 year old Hopkins who floored, hurt and cut him, whilst never being hurt himself. It is obvious that Calzaghe is behind a peak Hopkins, Jones, Toney, Ward, Macallum and several other fighters I could name at that weight category.
