April 19th, 2008. On this day, two legendary fighters collide in a fight billed as “The Battle of the Planet”; Joe Calzaghe aka “The Pride of Wales” and “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins, who look to retain his Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Championship against the undefeated Welshman.
Prefight records; Calzaghe 44(34)-0, Hopkins 48(32)-4-1.
Both fighters were renown for their versatility and ability to adapt to their opponents’ style, and both were dominant world champions in their previous divisions for nearly 10 years; Calzaghe at 168 and Hopkins at 160.
From January 1996 to February 2005, Hopkins stunningly made 20 successful consecutive title defenses as World Middleweight Champion before losing (via close decision) to a prime 27 year old Jermain Taylor.
Some of his best wins include; Winky Wright, Antonio Tarver, William Joppy, Howard Eastman, Carl Daniels, Glen Johnson, Keith Holmes, Lupe Aquino, John David Jackson, Syd Vanderpool, Antwun Echols (2x), Robert Allen (2x), Oscar De La Hoya & Felix Trinidad.
Joe Calzaghe reigned as World Super Middleweight Champion from January 1998 to November 2007 where he beat notable oppositions such as Sakio Bika, Richie Woodhall, Robin Reid, Jeff Lacy, Omar Sheika, Juan Carlos Gimenez, Byron Mitchell, Charles Brewer, Chris Eubank & Mikkel Kessler.
It in interesting to note that Joe Calzaghe last lost a fight 18 years before this, as an amateur.
The contrast in both fighter’s style makes it all in all an intriguing fight; the first few rounds went largely in Hopkins’ favor particularly the 1st where Hopkins decked Calzaghe with a flush right hand to the chin. Overall, Bernard was also able to dictate the rhythm in his favor - slow paced, low output with occasional periods of inactivity while piling up points with sharp, accurate single shots.
Hopkins having studied fight films of Calzaghe thoroughly kept the fight either at long or close range, as Joe usually fights best at a “mid distance” range. This allowed Hopkins to land pinpoint right hands and utilized his masterful infighting skills in clinches.
Additionally, Hopkins would hold often to halt Calzaghe’s momentum and counter punching opportunities.
Going to the mid poinr, the fight started to swing in favor of The Italian Dragon; a faster pace, higher volume of punches traded between both fighters where Calzaghe started to throw his vaunted flurries with precision forcing Bernard to an uncomfortable zone, who mostly landed one punch at a time.
Calzaghe also managed to turned the fight to occur mostly at mid range, and in some instances even managed to outwork Hopkins in the inside. As a whole, Hopkins was troubled by Calzaghe’s high volume of punches, hand speed as the pace was upped in favor of the faster, younger fighter.
Both fighters were warned multiple times for an assortment of fouls, but no points were deducted.
Going into the final round, Bernard’s corner felt that his man was ahead on points though they urged him to finish the last 3 minutes strongly. On the other hand Enzo Calzaghe, the father and trainer of Joe told him he was behind on points and strongly urged him to knock Hopkins out.
The fight ended with a very close SD in favor of Joe Calzaghe, who landed 100 more punches than Hopkins according to CompuBox Punchstats. Interestingly, Calzaghe had connected with more shots on Hopkins than any of his previous opponents.
Some have disputed the decision, believing that Hopkins was the deserving winner. What do you think?
Don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE guys! Muchas gracias!

i think it stems from insecurity in the fact that music, athletics, and 'street credit' are the only main things african americans are known to dominate in success, while white and asian american do better than them at everything else like business, school, higher education, medicine, science, abiding the law, reputation outside the country etc. it irks all the Bernard Hopkins, Devin Haney (i aint losing to no white boy)types that even in black dominated sports a white guy can beat them as if they thinkin "man they already got everything else now this white dude gonna take my sport too". even tho 1 black person losing to a white person does not change the overall demographics of the top american boxers. we see this in the NBA too. they feel especially embarassed to losing to white ballers compared to a fellow black baller. just a theory tho.

Joe Calzaghe gets undeserved slack. Surely Hopkins was probably landing the more significant counter punches through 1-7, however it was close and Hopkins clearly cheated to bide time because he couldn't adjust to Calzaghe's pace. As for the Slapping? ask Roy jones and Jeff Lacey after 12 rounds how their body and face felt? ask Keslser too or rather look at their battered bodies after the fight? This was such an awesome match-up. Hopkins was a crafty, slick, experienced fighter and while he was often not the best fighter in the ring, time and time again he proved that he was more than just a journeyman. He bested some world class fighters in his career. A testament to his skill and conditioning, Hopkins was 43 when this fight took place! Calzaghe never had heavy hands and his hooks looked more like slaps, but he had incredible movement, speed and resilience. For serious fans of the sweet science this matchup was a dream come true. B-Hop and Joe didn’t disappoint.

All very true but I will put you right on something, Joe could bang, just like Mayweather did he had to adapt his style after a few breaks, particularly to his left hand, I believe? I have to disagree with you. "While he was often not the best in the ring" Hopkins had 20 middleweight title defences and became the undisputed Middleweight Champion, he's an all time great. "Calzaghe never had heavy hands" not true, before his hand problems he had a lot of knockouts, he had to adapt to a less power higher volume style to try and avoid hand injuries. I'm sorry but you don't seem very knowledgeable on either fighters history.

@@ashb4275 Hopkins was not always the best boxer in the ring. What he lacked for in natural ability he made up for with ring smarts. Calzaghe had “heavy hands” perhaps in the UK. Hopkins was still a good fighter at this point and had more in the tank. He destroyed Kelly Pavlik AFTER this fight. Joe's stamina is the main reason he won, Bernard just couldn't keep up and had to resort to an exceptionally ugly and boring style. Not to mention the poor acting in Round 10 when he basically couldn't keep Joe off of him.

I feel guys like Hopkins or Jones, while not in their primes, threw too many hooks and looping punches. Easier said than done with a confident Calzaghe, but I felt you needed to pound him to the body, arms and with straight punches upstairs. Calzaghe moved a lot and had great angles which make that tough. I just feel so many tried hooking him to the head. I think the biggest problem for opponents with Calzaghe is that he moves in forward so quickly with punches and his body. They always seem to react just after he moves in. If a fighter maybe controlled Calzaghe with the jab instead of trying to time him, I feel they'd have more success. Jab, straight punches, control him. Easier said than done though.

Brilliant editing Jeff :D :D - The TRUTH of this fight was.... Watch it from the 4th Round** onwards and Hopkins does not win a round. He landed two or maybe three punches a round. But thats because Calzaghe went looking for him.. all night. Its Calzaghes game, he will come at you and be willing to take a shot and land two, three four of his own ... The story of the fight. Hopkins was going backwards all night, his tactics were... throw a right, if it doesnt land.. wrap around. Calzaghe sucked the life out of him.. The five minute break for that "low blow"... FFS what a farce... Cortez was round the other side of the fighters. He never saw it, and it wasnt low.. But Hopkins was blowing out his arse at the time and he knew he was losing. The only reason it was a split decision... Adelaide "brown envelope" Bird

This was a better fight than most acknowledged. It looked sloppy but you had a defensive master vs a younger come foreword fighter who would not allow himself to be shut out. Bernard made Calzaghe look sloppy and amateurish BUT Calzaghe said eff all and just kept trying to flurry. Most fighters just shut down when they miss Hopkins but to Joes credit he would not stop throwing and got the decision due to his will to win. I understand the split decision. If you judge on generalship Hopkins was cleaner sharper and looked more professional landing the harder shots but I had Calzaghe by a point bc he just kept hustling. Boxing purest can appreciate two chess players blocking each other’s strategy and see this as a good fight.

I met Bernard at a cafe in Northern Liberties, Philly that he frequents. I was with my business' lawyer when Hopkins came in. I mentioned to him that Hopkins was there and he quickly turned around and without hesitation raised his arm and called out "Champ"! I had no idea they knew each other. Hopkins sat with us for a bit and we talked about the Trinidad fight and I asked him specifically about this fight because I thought he got robbed. He said that the split in Calzaghe's way was most likely due to the knockdown and that he couldn't put him away so the judges just remembered a knockdown and a fighter who was not going away. Great guy. I sent my father the pic we took together. Didn't caption it. He replied... "What are you doing with that asshole. Great boxer". You see, my father's favorite boxer then was Felix Trinidad. Hopkins ended him.

After watching the fight closely, i gave the fight to Hopkins, when he connected ? His punches stunned Calzaghe! Even Calzaghe corner felt he was behind on points!

What a horrendous fight this was. 12 rounds of Calzaghe missing and lunging into clinches, and Hopkins staying in his shell. Should have been a draw, no one deserved to win this.

Obviously... Joe took control increasingly over the latter half of the fight.

@@bobshenix I disagree your bias alot of folks had Hopkins winning that fight most notably espn brian Kenny came right out n said he thought Hopkins won as well as others but with my eyes I seen hopkins win by one round or a draw

Calzaghe is relentless horse power, but remember Hopkins was 43 and did good.
