Apparently, when the first season of "You" premiered, there were so many women who were enthralled with Joe. The actual actor, Penn Badgely, felt strongly disgusted by this phenomenon. I was glad to see him address those issues by explaining how truly evil and "sick" the character of Joe actually is and how unhealthy it was to fantasize about the character. The show can be interesting to watch, but Joe gave me the instant chills and having had a dangerous stalker, I had a hard time understanding why anyone would romanticize his creepy character.

TamHutchins Not just women. I’ve seen at least two male KZfaq review channels (BrainPilot) that were really sympathetic to him in their reviews of the show. One of them even stated out right, that Joe really did love Beck. It was sickening to listen to. But yeah, there are so many girls and women defending and romanticising Joe all over social media...it’s depressing. This is what pop culture normalising stalking and controlling behaviour in men does to people. It’s ironic that it happened with “You” though, since that series was a straight up satire of romantic comedies, which are guilty of that normalisation.

I don’t understand it either. I loved Dexter, but he had the ability to genuinely love people and not have the urge to stalk or kill them (like a normal person), and he never felt entitled to their love. He was so much more rational, and he followed a moral code-so I understand why I and others were drawn to him. With Joe, he has very little boundaries. He’s rarely rational and does not follow a clear set of rules-he’s all over the place. And yeah, he doesn’t murder children, but he murders others in front of children. He murders people he claims to love. I’m wondering if it’s the “tortured soul” part of him that makes people attracted to him. He’s emotionally vulnerable in his internal dialog, and vulnerability is very attractive to a lot of people. I was still trying to figure him out before the ending of season 1, but when he trapped Beck in his glass chamber, I wanted her to get out alive and Joe caught or killed. I had no attachment to him at that point and saw that he needed to be taken out. I felt so terrible for Beck when he killed her. We went through her history and saw how vulnerable she was to disingenuous people-we really got to know her, and Joe just kills her. And we’re supposed to feel a loyalty to him after that? We’re supposed to still root for him? I just don’t get who would. Beck was a good (and flawed) person that didn’t deserve to die. Joe is beyond help-he needs to be locked away from society and never get out.

@@LaNoturna That's so funny that you brought up Dexter, bc I'm rewatching it as we speak. It's probably one of my favorite shows (top 5 for sure) and I learn something new each time. Dexter's inner monologue really shows us that, although he's a killer and that's not cool, he isn't a true psychopath. That is my opinion anyways. The fact that he is constantly examining himself in the light of wanting to feel emotions, which he actually does feel, leads us to see him differently than the inner monologue of Joe. Joe's thoughts are terrifying. Dexter's are in the sense that if I was a killer, I wouldn't want to meet Dexter on the street. But Joe doesn't care about any code. Beck was completely innocent! Nothing she did should have let Joe see her as expendable. Or his other victims. Granted, in season 2, that producer was abusing and raping young girls. I think he was a really bad person, and under Dexter's code he may have been eliminated too. But for Joe, and the "You" show, I think it was supposed to be a redeeming thing Joe did, even though Joe also had very personal motives to kill him. And lots of people are just mean assholes, but no one should murder them for that. I appreciate your comment because you nailed it in the head. At least in my opinion.

Craig Stallone As far as I know you can’t officially diagnose someone you have not spoken to (although of course you may speculate as to what is going on with someone psychologically) in a psychotherapy arrangement, and needless to say a fictional character would fall under this category. Hope this helps. 🙂
@LemonSte
@LemonSte 3 жыл бұрын
Of course he's fictional so I'm just speculating, but here's some of my thoughts in response to what you said - I think Joe's thoughts are more upbeat, "empathetic", seemingly rational because he's just constantly lying to himself about who he is. He knows the difference between right and wrong, he just constantly chooses to do the wrong thing because it's what he wants to do, and rationalises it to fit his ideal image of himself. He thinks he's a hero for stalking Beck, murdering her boyfriend and Peach. Where the inconsistency comes I think is in situations where for example he "goes dark" like you say, cold, and does things like kill Beck, frame the psychiatrist for murder and attempt to murder Love (before she says she's pregnant) with little inner dialogue that explains his reasoning except to just get away with it. I guess the implication is that most of the time he is trying insanely hard to appease this image he has of himself, but when he "needs" to, he can switch that off to avoid capture. However in some scenes he's visibly disgusted by Gore and blood etc.
@izzyrocks72
@izzyrocks72 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Plus I think his charm is superficial, he’s able to keep up appearances for a while, but ultimately he fails each time and ends up murdering his partners. We see that in season 2, he’s not actually satisfied with Love and moves on to his next victim in the last episode. I also think he’s more of a stalker than a serial killer, especially in season 1. Yes he does kill, but it seams more of a way to be able to continue the stalking and control the victim than something he gets pleasure out of. I think he derives his pleasure from the complete control of another person.
@savannap5124
@savannap5124 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I feel like they were alluding to this in season 2. I feel like he was purposely narrating it to be digestable for the audience and to gain supporters, in reality thats another manipulation. He know exactly what hes doing, he purposely kills. He has a messed up game hes playing to toy with all of his victims. I feel like everything is on purpose and well thought out on his part. I think he is just a regular serial killer with a dialogue that creates the superficial image that hes STILL the good guy even after murdering all these people, he justified all of it for the audience. Idk if that made any sense.
@heatherwills3404
@heatherwills3404 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. He kills a lot of people, but the killing itself isn't what he craves-- which is why he isn't a serial killer-- it's the control of his victims. He has a warped self image of the "good guy" white knight, and when he does something that doesn't fit that self image, he finds ways to justify his behavior. Since killing his father to protect his mother, murder has just become a part of his toolkit to "protect" the ones he "loves." He might get some pleasure out of the killing, but it comes from a self righteous place. Murdering these people because they deserve to be punished. Then he kills the romantic partners when they "fall from grace," becuase they don't match the perfect person he's made them to be in his head. After all he's done to protect them/ take care of them (from his warped senses of right and wrong), he feels deceived and lashes out accordingly. No one is the villan in their own story, and humans can do horrible things when they can justify it to themselves.

Something that drew me to the character of a Joe was his internal monologue. I’m in therapy right now and that’s something I struggle with with my mental health is my logic an emotional always negotiating with each other. It is this constant inner monologue and I’m always being introspective and trying to figure out why I think the way I do and why I do the things that I do. I’m very ego dystonic, conflicted in my head, and trying to be as pro social as possible. I really appreciate your take on this character as always 🤗 thank you for giving your professional opinion and analysis.

Imho the inner monologue of Joe may qualify for that of a communal narcissist. I met one and he tried to disguise his striving for power over everyone as just wanting the best for them while he was completely lacking actual empathy and only befriending either people with codependent tendencies or severe mental illnesses, and I can totally tell he really believed what he was saying about himself. Also communal narcissists don't typically strive for money. I guess if they made the setting him working as a therapist, in childcare or church it could have been fairly more realistic.

BPD and NPD traits can occur co-morbidly because they are both attachment disorders with strong desires for validation that arise from issues of being raised improperly in childhood. NPD can arise from either excessive admiration and indulgence in childhood and/ or childhood emotional abuse/neglect. BPD comes from childhood abuse and/or neglect.

Joe’s whole vibe really really reminded me of someone I once knew. As far as I’m aware, they never killed anyone lol, but according to them, they wanted to. For the same reason Joe explains it in the narration of the show. He was trying to protect someone he really obsessed over. Needless to say, I got out that situation quickly. He was probably talking a load of nonsense, but still. Joes version of love isn’t love. It’s an idealised obsession. But not in the psychopath kind of way. In my opinion, his traits line up more with very severe Borderline Personality Disorder. I only say this bc it’s a diagnosis the guy I knew actually had. Joe doesn’t have a social life. He doesn’t have friends. As of season 2, you never really see any friends from when he was growing up, only the bookstore owner, and his parents. Who both treated him terribly or abandoned him in one way or another. BPD is usually ‘triggered’ through abuse/abandonment in childhood. People with BPD may cling to someone they live in later life. They’re petrified of that person leaving, or getting hurt. So in Joe’s case, didn’t want to hurt Beck, but wanted to hurt anyone who could of took her away from him. BPD is also characterised as “bad” or unstable thoughts about one’s self, but if it gets severe enough, could probably be about someone else. Also psychosis in the form of hallucinations and delusions are not uncommon with people with untreated BPD. We know that Joe has serious delusions. About not only his thoughts of the future and the unrealistic expectations with his obsessions, but he over reacts in regards to the people the obsession in involved with. I don’t think Joe is a psychopath. He doesn’t want to hurt people. He wants to protect his obsession. It’s all about her. Not him, not the victim. Always the obsession. He doesn’t have a strong sense of self. If someone asked you to write a paper on the identity, likes, dislikes and career aspirations of Joe, I doubt you could do it. Because he lives for his love. We hear the literal thoughts in his head, but it’s never about how he “likes that donut” it’s always about the obsession, who made him the donut. The only hobby we know he has, outside of following his lovers around, is books. But that’s only because he was made to respect them, by his childhood abuser. We don’t know anything else about him, but we know so much about everyone else. We even know more about his neighbour’s teen sister more then we know about the protagonist. For people with severe BPD, at least in the case of the guy I use to know, I didn’t know anything about him. It was all about the person he loved. He only played the game he “liked” bc she played it. He only liked the food he ate bc she did. And Joe does the same- in a way. You never really see him having a good preference, but he’ll like anything that his obsession makes him. You never know how he feels about going to clubs or family gatherings with his lovers, he’s always too preoccupies with making sure no one says anything to upset or bother his lover. In season 1, I think he only feels bad for Paco, is because he knows what it’s like to have fighting parents. And an abusive father figure. So I believe he feels for paco. Something someone with ASPD probably wouldn’t or couldn’t do. Joe seems so unphased by everything. Doesn’t care that he meets a celebrity, doesn’t show any form of anxiety. It’s like his entire identity is mushed up, only concerned about his obsession. Which I’ve noticed a lot of people miss out on. Do we ever actually see him reading a book? Or even watching tv. No. Not unless someone tells him to watch a certain movie. Or he’s doing it to please someone. It’s like the only thing in his mind is the person he loves. But if he was a psychopath, he wouldn’t feel empathy. Which he does. But in a weird way. He feels for first his young neighbour Paco, and then his young neighbour teenage neighbour. It’s like he’s still hurting from his childhood. So he wants to protect the kids around him. When he first meets a girl that becomes his obsession, one of the first thoughts he has is how happy them and their kids will be. Like he wants to create the perfect family that he never got to have. And has fixated on the idea. This guy is not another dexter. he’s a broken person who is fixated on meeting the perfect girl to have a perfect family that he never got to have. He just might not know how to stop his impulses, which is another main symptom of BPD.

I don’t think Joe is anything like Dexter. Dexter is rational and follows a moral code. Joe is often irrational and pretty impulsive with his actions. Dexter never killed or stalked the people he loved, and he never felt entitled to their love. We know Joe stalks the people he claims to love AND kills them, and he does feel entitled to have them. There’s too many differences. The only thing they both have in common is that they want to be better people. Joe exhibits way less good qualities, though. The only line he hasn’t crossed (yet) is killing children. That’s the only time he sticks to a moral code.

Aww man, I loved season 2. In season 1, Joe was clearly the “bad guy” the entire time, and everyone else his victims. In season 2, SO many characters were proving themselves to be in the same “bad” pool as Joe-I LOVED it. I didn’t know who was “crazier.” I love complex characters and not knowing what to expect.

Nope. Disagree. Season 1 was more grounded sure but season 2 was abit more wild because of the LA setting and the plot was far more unpredictable compared to season 1. It was just more thrilling. Especially the last 4 episodes of season 2... The characters around Joe were more interesting and had more personality to them instead of just being stereotypes and Penn Badgley outdid himself in his performance

It kind of reminds me of when I was in high school, how the Twilight books and other vampire and werewolf romance books were new and popular. I think YA fiction audiences love the idea of dating someone dangerous. It's why so many girls enjoy making fan fiction and fan art of horror movie villains and 'creepypasta' monsters. I think it's often harmless, from what I've seen, but the idea of romanticizing 'realistically portrayed' killers upsets me, just because it seems so disrespectful to the real victims of those types of crimes and their families. It also nurtures the idea that a killer's 'one true love' can fix them and save them from themselves, and that abusive relationships are more attractive due to their emotional complexity.

Paul Spector from "The Fall" seems to be portrayed more realistically, still I'm not sure if his creepiness and his "kind of caring for his family, though not enough" completely go together - though there was this serial killer who doubled as the perfect dad for years and years. Paul Spector seems to be torn between his warped sexual urges and his kind of caring for his family and clients who seem like an anchor to a healthier, "saner" life. Still, something about his general "niceness" and sensitivity when "in the normal world" seems inconsistent with a serial killer's personality. He can also act quite cowardly and then grandiose when with his victims, but I think that is not inconsistent. I would really appreciate it if you analysed him, Dr. Grande! His combination of character traits really freaked me out, and I think I need to know it is an impossible one or at least learn to understand it!

It made me feel sick. One day in middle school I was just talking with this guy I barely knew and suddenly said "Oh I loved that pic you posted online so much that I downloaded it, look" and proceeded to show me it. I instantly felt sick to my stomach. Couple that with my interest in true crime and seeing how erratic people can act, I just try to go through life unnoticed. A few points: 1. Joe is an unreliable narrator. He THINKS he's a moral killer - or he wants to create the illusion that he is. 2. He seeks to increase control over the love interest through removal of others around her - at least in season 1. But this is indeed inconsistent. 3. Jeffrey Dahmer is one example of a serial killer who did not enjoy the actual killing, nor did he appear to understand his own "urges". It was a means to an end, as it seems to be for Joe.

Hi Doc! Would you consider making a video about how different mental and personality factors may affect the likelihood that someone will accept responsibility for their behaviour (whether destructive or criminal)? E.g. maybe those with NPD, ASPD, and disorders that are egosyntonic are less likely to admit responsibility, while those with high conscientiousness or egodystonic disorders are more likely etc. Further, at what point is an individual no longer able to be held responsible for their actions (e.g. meeting the definition of legal insanity)? What impact does taking responsibility (or not taking responsibility!) have on treatment / rehabilitation / legal system outcomes?

I'm not even remotely an expert, but I would say the character Hannibal from the TV show might fit that criteria. He likes to overpower, kill, and humiliate his victims which are usually strangers to him, he thinks of his victims as "pigs", he considers himself unique and better than anyone else (specifically his style, taste, and sophistication), he manipulates the people closest to him, and I'm sure there's much more. And sure enough, it's an ultra graphic, hard to digest (no pun intended) TV show that didn't hit mainstream popularity and got cancelled after 3 seasons. It has a cult following though!
