Thank you. I used to be the usual average fan, I used to think the Heavyweight division was the best, I had no knowledge of any other decade apart from the 70s (for context, this was years ago). I used to think Muhammad Ali was the best and greatest Heavyweight... Until I found out about Joe Louis. Of course, I was doubting him, and I could never see myself rank him over Ali. That was what I always thought until I realised the skills of Louis... Of course, they aren't far off each other, I mean I have Ali at #6 P4P and Louis at #5, they're basically right next to each other, and I can always respect Ali over Louis since it's so close... But looking back at it with precision, I can never see myself ranking Ali as the Heavyweight GOAT. It'll be Joe Louis forever, for me.

The Ali argument is simple. The Louis argument may take a bit more research but it's there.

Louis is so good that people have to come with stories to undermine him, otherwise it's incredible how good he was. We have to hear how "Conn got dumb and tried to slug it out" even though that didn't happen, we have to hear how Conn was worse in the rematch so it doesn't count, even though both he and Louis had the same time off and Louis was 32 compared to Conn's 28, we have to hear how Walcott won the first fight even though we have no full fight footage to score it and all 3 judges gave Walcott 7 rounds and no more than that, we have to hear how Walcott go careless in the rematch even though Louis was landing his jab consistently and Walcott was forced to switch his approach. Always excuses because it's hard to believe that Louis was so good he was dominating the division for over a decade. Ali edges it out on opposition because he had Frazier and Foreman, but aside from Foreman, Ali never dominated his opposition like Louis did. These two are close, but Louis reigned like a king, and in my book, he is number 1.

Nice points. Louis does indeed suffer from certain interpretations whereas Ali usually benefits.

Agreed...for me, he's simply THE best heavy weight in History. Louis was THE man for darn near 12 years with 25 defenses. A feat that has not be replicated yet to this day. Joe Louis was not just ahead for his time...he simply was something so special that we haven't seen his like since. HOO-YAH & God Bless Joe Louis' Soul and Memory.

Because Joe was humble and not a braggart. Did he ever lose a championship fight? Why nobody mentions Rocky is baffling. He never lost a professional fight.

If Ken Norton was Ali's kryptonite, then Joe Louis would have been his worst nightmare. Louis's near perfect technique combined with his fast hands and straight punches would spell disaster for Ali. I would pick Louis in a trilogy with Ali. By the way, Louis's best weight during his twenties was 208, not 200. In fact he fought at 203 several times before he became champion. The difference between them physically is negligible.

I put 200 hundred as I remember him tipping 199 for the Schmeling and Godoy rematch.
