Fighters back In those days weren't the physical specimens like today but they went 15 fought cross weight didn't matter they had to eat. That was 1938

Ali had a bad habit of pulling back from punches. He did not block punches especially the jab well, at all. Eddie Futch, who used to spar with Joe Louis to help Joe try and avoid real quick punches and tap Eddie in return, stated that Louis would beat Ali. Joe had a great jab and very fast hands. An extremely well skilled very fast puncher with power in both hands that he often used behind a great jab. Louis threw both upstairs and downstairs, very effectively. Futch went on to train both guys that beat Ali before Ali got old as a boxer; he trained Joe Frazier and Ken Norton. Norton beat Ali because of his use of the jab. Frazier tagged Ali repeatedly because Ali pulled back from punches. I think Louis would beat Ali by coming on late and winning most all later rounds. However, Ali, IMO, is the second greatest heavyweight that ever lived and a battle between Louis and Ali in their primes is the biggest dream match up in boxing history, IMO. Louis never fought a great boxer who is as fast as Ali, but Ali never fought a well skilled boxer with power who is as quick handed as Louis is, either.

The problem with Ali is that he just wasn't that powerful a puncher. He could have played with Louis all he wanted but Louis would still have stalked him like a cobra through 15 rounds. Eventually I think Louis would have tagged him. Ali had trouble with lots of guys slower and less skilled than Louis.

I would give the advantage to Louis. Louis had better fundamentals,

They're unheard because Louis didn't drop the title back and forth. They were good fighters but they are unknown because of how coldly Louis dispatched them.

That is the stupidest criticism that people make about him. His whole thing was the ability to be stay calm under fire and control aggressive fighters. If you actually wanna give yourself a shot at beating him, you need to be technically proficient to compete with him.

Ali was very strong, but didn't have a Louis punch. However, Louis got hit a lot and it appeared some punches hurt him. I wouldn't presume to call the winner of a Louis vs. Ali fight.

Even though alis most famous fights were after his ban from boxing he was in far better shape before it. Joe Louis by contrast was pretty shot post war. Ali ended up relying too much on his iron chin but pre ban Ali the one that fought Cleveland Williams would not be touched by Joe. Just my opinion.

Louis would have knocked Ali out. There would be no phantom punch no mob fix as most of ali' s fights were theatre.

Louis already was an absolute monster. He wasn’t as easy to hit as you would think. His opponents thought so and stepped right into his dynamite!!

+MrAitraining It wasn't black/white hype, it was because the venue was so close to Mann's hometown that he had such a strong following. Even during those times Joe Louis was usually the fan favorite and very popular in culture because he was such a class act.

+Paul Dillon You're right, It was all local fighter hype. The train to NYC from New Haven was full of fans of Uncle Nate. He was my uncle through marriage. The crowd was mainly his fans from his home town. It was never a black/white thing.

Bob Marioni Nathan Mann was my uncle through marriage and he baptized my mom shortly after this fight. Sad how some of these guys wind up punch drunk at a young age. I give him credit for even stepping in the ring. He’s sooo young here.

I think he would if you notice the 3rd round Mann seems to try and stay closer to Louis and Marciano would have to do the same like Godoy did.

This is exactly how Louis would be fighting Marciano. Mann weighs more than Rocky and is the same height as him. He tries to pressure Joe and slug it out. There is no better representation for how a prime Louis would deal with Rocky than this fight and the Godoy fights.

Hi crawlFace, Nathan Mann, according to what I've read, was a worry wart. Marciano could fall asleep prior to a bout, but Mann was cut from a different cloth. However I give the guy credit for attempting to fight back. I enjoy watching guys from different eras; how they held their gloves, head movement, etc. Chris Arreola and a few other modern great heavies should watch these videos of old time nothings. Perhaps they'll realize there's more to boxing than lifting weights, taking PEDs and eating. Louis, as did so many "old time" boxers, was taught to leave openings in order to counter effectively. Personally, I think that would be poor tactics against such quick boxers like Ali and Mike Tyson. Charles and Marciano, in my humble opinion, would have very hard pressed to beat this young Louis. I do agree with your opinion that Louis didn't progress but, something I've observed, if something works why mess with it. That appears to be the attitude for most trainers. Marco Antonio Barrera is an excellent example of a boxer who changed his style and has become a boxing great.

Vincent Fisher Yes it did work for Louis but I think he could have been even better during his time if he added some more movement. If he could have developed a little of E.Charles' style Louis would have been near perfect. I think there was room for improvement where he didn't have to get caught by punches as much as he did. I think there are a bunch of fighters who shouldn't have hurt Louis. I also think Louis is too complacent, as if he's ok with letting his opponent throw punches and he's ok with taking punches. What I'm getting at with this is that I'd like to see a little more aggression and dictating the fight. I think Joe could have used his jab even more. Louis fought a lot of crafty fighters. Sometimes it may seem like the bum a month was full of weak guys but I noticed that lots of Joe's opponents knew how to fight. Sometimes I wonder if some of these modern fighters watch any old footage at all. I mean, they have too, no? I'd find it unbelievable if they didn't. I think Joe's beautiful punch mechanics resulted in the kind of power and effect that could have ko'd anyone.

I think Louis was 1/2" shorter than Ali. Louis's punches crippled and bloodied a number of very good heavy weights such as Braddock ( he said Louis's jab felt like broken glass being shoved into his face), 2nd bouts with Schmeling and Arturo Godoy. Both Braddock and Godoy, after the bouts, looked like they had been beaten with baseball bats. Schmeling ended up in the hospital and one of his injuries, if I remember correctly, included a cracked vertebrae as result of Schmeling turning his back from Louis's onslaught. Watch the video and you can see Schmeling getting hurt and turning away from Louis who hits Schmeling's back. Both Charles and Marciano had to" eat" Louis's jabs and their faces were very swelled afterwards. Imagine if they had faced a much younger Louis. Ken Norton said that he knew that Ali was going to hit him with the right, a difficult punch to land for a righty since it has to travel a long distance, and there was nothing Norton could do about it. Ali's reflexes were godlike. I agree with your assumption that Ali could have beaten Louis. Also, Tyson and Holmes have made remarks that Louis would haven't done well in the modern era. However I go by Eddie Futch's remarks. He never doubted Joe Louis's greatness, and neither do I. No one should. I have to agree that his style could have been tweaked a little. It appears he was taught to be an aggressive fighter both to get people to buy tickets and to utilize his natural tendencies. I have no idea if trainers utilize videos (they should!) of past fighters to show what to do or not to do. Videos of the vintage Roberto Duran should be highly valued. I would also analyze any video of Charley Burley. Study and then experiment in the gym.

Vincent Fisher Awesome. Well then, I certainly will take this moment to recognize one of the best heavyweight champions, Joe Louis. I never had a problem visualizing that Joe could have a modern style. I believe he was a tremendous athlete, an iron man. If Joe's life happened in modern times he would have been a great modern fighter. Probably a notable difference is a modern Louis style: better utilizes the left hand for defense rather than keeping the left hand as low as he sometimes does, better utilizes the jab rather than poking and prodding jabs that Louis threw when feeling his opponent out and keeping timing and good distance (which can have its benefit), but I think trainers would realize there's no need to play around... "hey Joe, just throw plenty of normal jabs, and double and triple up on em too, and you'll be fine". I mean, Joe's jab was great, powerful and fast. and lastly a modern Louis would have some more head and body movement. This doesn't mean he would dance, but it does mean that he would slip punches better than he already does, while remaining at a great countering distance inside, while not getting caught with his opponent's wild haymaker in the exchange like Joe has been known to get caught with.

I will not argue with you because you have made valid points. Joe competed in an era when heavyweights, as you know. weighed from 180 LBs and beyond. However. the skill level was much higher in Louis's era, and I find it hard to believe that a John Ruiz or Evander Holyfield, along with many others, would have beaten Louis. Mike Tyson, because of style, is the exception. I realize there are many Tyson haters,but for around 3 years he was as good as any heavyweight who has ever existed. He resembled Jack Dempsey in style. Attacking from a crouch and using his feet to escape counters and to attack. Once again, I enjoy responding with you.

I love Louis to death.But in today's times Louis wouldn't been dominant with the bigger faster heavyweights of today no way.Louis would've to gain more weight and his boxing style would had to change with more head and body movement to even have a chance.But Louis fighting stand up flat footed style of the 1930's work for him.But it would not have in todays modern times say against a prime 1967 Ali.Poor louis would've been chasing Ali all night while getting hit with Ali lighting fast jabs and combo's.

for whatever reason, people are bigger 100 yrs later. Louis in prime was 6'1" 200. he still grew in later years like Braddock did to 6'2". now he would be 6'3"220 in his prime. really great balance and super fast hands. very focused and economical.

Nonsense. if you think a heroin addict like Liston could have beaten Louis You know nothing of the game. Tyson would have been spent in 6 rounds as in all of his fights and so would have Foreman. Holmes would have been interesting but go with Joe in a 15 round decision. Only had a left hook and was blind in his right eye nope. Lennox was a stiff and he beat stiffs. Ali perhaps - a 15 round fighter with fast feet but could he keep it up for 15 rounds and he hit like a powder puff, I don't think so.
