Joe McCarthy has been a revelation recently for Irish Rugby. Raised and moulded in Leinster, the big man has been taking up trees in the provincial game and in Europe and has continued this into international rugby for Ireland. He is a heavy duty ball carrier who makes smart decisions in defence. With much to learn, the sky is the limit for this beast.

there were only 3/4 games played in this video and there's already a 2 minutes montage of him controling the game, him and bierne will be the biggest lock threat in international rugby next world cup.

England fan here, he looks the real deal. Never understood the James Ryan hype as he’s average at all second row facets. But McCarthy and beirne are some pairing.

@@PocketRugbyIn the Amateur days it meant a "hit-man," like Cowboy Shaw, who would punch opposition players. It would be foolish to try that now, with so many cameras around! Speaking of cameras and suchlike, it was great to watch Harlequins/Munster today without any TMOs.

Usually a tight head lock who is excellent protecting ruck ball, clearing rucks, smashing tackles etc. don't really see the word enforcer used outside of any position other than tight head lock. Think of bakkies botha, ethzebeth, Jamie Cudmore etc. locks with a little bit of edge but of huge size
