Joe is a gifted individual. The more I learned BTS about his images, the more I am convinced that it is not the camera or the gear that makes images, it is the trained mind, eye and the knowledge to light things that makes all the difference.

I've watched a ton of these videos from different Photographers, and this is by far one of my favorites. Great stuff, Mr McNally.

Awesome as always. Nice video, but why is the Preservation Hall part added to this. Seems odd to mix a New Orleans shoot with this Florida shoot.

Getting the shot(s) right is really serious work, but you seem to have a lot of fun too.

Joe explains this in one of his books. He is cross dominant, meaning he is right handed but left eye dominant, so he holds the camera in a much different way than most photographer would. Remember too that he has been at it for a long time and can get away with getting a shot from a less than ideal footing as well. I've seen some photographers do some goofy looking things and still get the shot. Yes, a sound footing and firm grasp on the camera are helpful indeed and should be practiced.

.. i love watching this behind the scenes, it's so wonderful to watch how a great photographer sets up everything just to make a 1/60th of a second shot. Truly fantastic. And that girl with the bow, simple amazing but what's more interesting is she isn't asian.

I liked this video a lot! I'm gonna buy a d7000 myself to follow up my d90 soon. Then I'm gonna save a lot of money for a full pro set like the d4 with some af lenses :3
@HammadIqbalPhoto10 жыл бұрын
I have been reading his book "The Hot Shoe Diaries" and so far it seems to me that he does always use Speedlites and yet make stunning images from minimal gear unlike a majority of newbies or wannabes who spend so much more money in getting costly gear and way less time in learning to craft light and compose striking photos.
@fstuart154711 жыл бұрын
Most wonderful. you take pictures and manipulate light.
@voidzzzz12 жыл бұрын
To whoever saying the photos are good because of the camera, let me assure you the camera does half, or even less, of the job. McNally's a fucking genius with the lighting. That's why the photos are extraordinary.

Did I detect a nod to Richard Avedon and Dovima in there? I’m glad I’m not the only person who uses words like "gaffer tape" not knowing what they mean. Across all light from natural, through speedlights to top of the range monoblocs, is there anyone in the world who understands it better than Joe McNally? I know there may be people as good, but better?
