Joe Rogan is an old friend of mine from back in my Hollywood days when I lived there from 2002-2008.
He's a long time pool player and student of the game in addition to being a great comic, Tae Kwon Do national champion, host for the UFC, and multi talented individual.
We worked on his game a lot back in the mid 2000's in LA after we met at the legendary pool hall, Hollywood Billiards in Hollywood, California.
Joe Rogan has improved a lot with hard work, focus and practice, and when he gets in stroke, he can put together several break and runs playing 9-Ball on a tight 9 foot pool table.

Joe has his hand in just about everything, and it's amazing how he commands the respect of others on things like this even though he is not known for it. Some people command respect even if they have no expertise, because they give off the appearance of expertise. Other people might be talented at something but they also know how much they don't know, which keeps them modest and quiet about it. He never competed in MMA but he commands respect. He's not a good comedian but he commands respect. He's a confident guy and has masculine features, hyper-masculine with hormone therapy, so people listen. He invites guests on and veers them into topics they don't know about so he can appear more knowledgable. "Did you see the article on XYZ?" "No I didn't see that particular article." "Pull it up Jamie." Then proceeds to explain it to them.

@@sup9542 Thank you, would have written the same thing! I shoot several nights a week/my pops owned a pool hall while I was growing up. I’m a big fan of Joe, but talking 🚮 in pool belongs in movies. The comment above got me. With the “commands respect”. I don’t command respect in games I play poorly in, or games I’d like to think I play quite well. One pocket & 9 are my games on a pool table. I wouldn’t ever command respect as the above comment suggests. If you’re not one of the legends that respect is just a given. It’s not “commanded” like some wizard lol. Varner, Sammy & Lorrie John, countless other pros/.players I’ve had the pleasure am forever grateful to have learned from. They’d never “command respect”, whether someone spoke poorly to them or had poor sportsmanship. Good pool etiquette is up there or above how well someone plays the game. If he came out & said he’s got a 75+ run in 14+1 “straight”, well I’d have respect for him immediately shooting pool. I already have tremendous respect for him as a comedian, for his podcasts, etc., simply as a human being in general that brings a great deal of comedy & knowledge to an enormous population which is something invaluable which someone can give to the population.

Thats why in pro league breaks are rotated. Dont matter if you’re in the top 500 players, which I’m nowhere near that & I break & run fairly consistently. If you’re not running racks, keep practicing. I grew up in a smoke filled/dim lighted old school pool hall my pops owned in NJ. Played all over the nation before the age of 15 in competition and exhibition matches. Learned from pros & quite a few legit hustlers that could have shot pro just didn’t because they made more $ not recognized. I certainly follow your podcast/have for quite some time. Definitely happy you are giving the game a much deserved boost and respect it deserves. Anytime you’re in Jersey I’d love to shoot a game. Tried one night to send an email/certainly have a few stories myself which might be interesting/entertaining, think it referenced me to your attorneys when I attempted to even try & send an email.

He interviewed Earl Strickland in that club once I think. Joe better not get the big head or Strickland will straight out tell him I'll give you three balls in. 9 ball. Players like Joe the ones that I usually spot balls because they have a good eye but haven't learned to play position on high level. I play 94, 6 ball 8 ball whatever one pocket another games that old timers have taught me. I would give Joe two balls and 6 ball but he breaks and I choose the two balls to take off there is and then he gets the shot so I'll take two balls off after he breaks and even if he doesn't make anything I'll give him a shot because I took two boos off which in essence means he made two balls. I made a lot of money doing that before 8 balls the best to play against someone like Joe because they're good enough to get their balls out of the way if they shoot first but then once again that position comes in to problem when the other player has not shot yet. Generally they get stuck behind the oppositions balls either on their last shot before the 8th or on the 8th. Those folks are from the play because they do all the work for you by getting the balls out of the way. You guys know any pool shooters down in Charlotte or the southeast ask them if they know a kid named Osborne I'm on the amateur but I hustle. Joe's had a good teacher for sure.

I hustled pool in college and played in tournaments in and out of state. I played a lot of people who played Joe's speed and could win pretty easily. Joe is a very good player among average players. There is a huge difference between a top tournament player and Joe. Joe is very intelligent. It takes years of countless practice, playing with very good players and if lucky like I was coaching from top players who saw my talent when I was young. I never played quite to the level of famous players but I could hold my own if things worked out well and could beat average players pretty easily. Joe is good at martial arts, maybe decent at pool. He is not one of us, who have played since we had to use a milk crate to stand on. His stroke is all off, he’s never slept at a pool hall and played for three days straight with no sleep. I lived pool from 5-19, I’ve showered hungry more times than I can count in a bathroom, hands stained blue and filthy. I’ve been up big money and I’ve been broken and homeless on the road, I’ve shit on the streets waiting for pool halls to open more times than I’d like. I’ve gambled and won with no money, taking bets when I was broke, had five high end Meuccis stolen or sold, fought my way outta deadly situations, had balls thrown full force at my chest, had runs where I couldn’t miss, had games where I missed by a millimeter for days. It’s a hard life for those that have really lived it, there are many players in Chicago who have never had a job in their life, ever. The best players are in the shadows of long nights, you’ve never heard of them, they don’t play tournaments, they grind so hard day in and day out. They are dead beats, missing teeth, scumbags, but we are tough and admirable.

They love to tell the story where Joe showed them the pool table, did a few shots, didn't let them shoot once, showed them a virtual bow hunting game, didn't let them try it out. @myblacklab7 Жыл бұрын
I feel like it's the in-between players who use severe draw like that (we Americans call it draw, as in drawing the ball back). The pros are so good at positioning that they rarely need to use much. In fact, professional pool is one of the most boring sports on earth - watching someone run 10 racks in a row in 9 ball is sort of like watching someone count to 9 over and over, except slower.
@somepeoplecanthandlethetruth

@@myblacklab7 I just came across this again. Cheers for the reply, Pro British pool is just as boring because all the pros can clear the table in one turn. Which BTW for beginners is impossible, you be lucky to pot two balls in one turn. That's why we all watch Snooker lol its more fun.
@myblacklab7
@myblacklab7 Жыл бұрын
@@brucecharlie8613 Yeah, I think they need to introduce different games that encourage risk-taking. Things have stagnated for a long time with 8 ball and 9 ball. Even at a local low-level tournament I play in sometimes, the winners are always guys who don't take chances, so anyone who dares to attempt a masse, a jump shot, or any other difficult shot gets eliminated early, because 9 ball is all about playing it safe. I totally agree about beginners - sort of like how a beginning baseball player can't make more than one or two free throws in a row. Cheers!

Joe's a decent shooter. Joe can play in local 9 ball tournaments, but he would, 100%, be at the very bottom. Players are usually rated A, B, C, D with pluses and minuses used. Like an A- player. Joe is a D. I know this because I played at the D, then the C until I couldn't get passed B+. He can beat most schmoes in a pool hall, but NONE that take the game seriously.

As an English pool player, I have never understood the rocking motion in 9 ball/American 8 ball. Cueing straight is far superior, as the snooker pros such as O'Sullivan demonstrate. Joe seems decent for a guy who works so hard in other areas, so I have to give him some credit.

O'Sullivan could get beat at 9 ball if playing players will long rocking strokes like Efren and Strickland or Bustamonti. Long strokes have power and these top players were plenty accurate. Now I will get in the weeds a little as a very good player. The longer the stroke, the more action you can get on the cue ball with lower ball speed. The lower the ball speed, the higher the probability of pocketing balls. There is an old hustler's saying. Shot hard and sleep in the streets. Translation, shot hard and you will blow more balls. That is why a longer stroke is preferred in a game like nine ball where a powerful stroke comes in handy to traverse the table as sometimes required. Cheers from across the pond. Snooker is a very different game than pool and requires a different stroke. Could Davis and O'Sullivan play 9 ball and straight pool? Very good at it. But more pool championships were won by players with longer, more powerful strokes including by Segal.
