This is what I argue but people think I'm crazy. Last year I moved out of the USA to a big city in another country. I didn't have a car and just walked and used public transportation. In three months I lost 15 lbs. I know it's not a lot but five pounds a month over a year is 60 lbs. I know immigrants who move to the US and within five years they are obese. Its about our environment that affects our lifestyle. It's not that people in other countries are more determined

I was overweight and out of shape and decided one day to make a change. I quit smoking and drinking and went on the keto diet for 30 days. I bought a skipping rope and committed to 10 mins everyday. I started adding in some bodyweight exercises. I'd workout on the playstructure at the school nearby. Then I bought some rings and hung them in the tree in my yard. I started to develop what I'd call a "movement vocabulary". Before all this I made previous attempts to get into running and struggled to work up to 3km. Within a few months I was running 10km no problem. For the first time in years, I actually had a flat stomach. People would say that I was on a health kick, and at first I would get mad. I knew something was different this time. After 6 months finally one of my friends acknowledged it was a lifestyle change. After a year I was in the best shape of my life and on my way to getting a six pack (so I hoped). I started working construction and still kept at it, but with less gusto. I moved to a different site with a longer commute, and harder work. I let my training slip, but I was still in pretty good shape. Still running and working hard. I actually couldn't believe the scale when it got down to 140lbs. Then I rolled my ankle at work due to uneven ground. I rolled both ankles and the left one twice. I was taping my ankle to run for a bit, but eventually I just tried to let it heal. I got so depressed not running. I decided to quit construction and maybe get a part-time job for a while so I'd have time to do more me stuff like train in different ways and creative projects. For a while I had been eating pretty much whatever I wanted. I just made sure to get in enough protein and veg. At some point I went off the rails and ate a pint of Haagen Daz everynight for 2 weeks straight and saw no noticeable change. The biggest change actually was that my cravings came back like bat out of hell. I was drinking and smoking again and though I tried to keep it to a minimum there is no question that it got in the way of training. The thing was that I kept running though. So, though I was starting to see a decline in my fitness I had started wearing mostly athleisure clothes, so it wasn't immediately obvious how much weight I was gaining. Then I got Achilles Tendonitis and it was all downhill from there. Joe is scared of excuses for a reason. It is a slippery slope. And the thing is that it doesn't necessarily smack you upside the head until it's a little too late. Not too late to do anything, but late enough that it sucks. It's sort like driving in the wrong direction for a while. Yes, you can always turn around. But man, does it ever just suck the fucking wind out of your sails when you realize you gotta go the same distance, plus whatever mileage you just dicked around being lost. Point is keep after it, don't make excuses, don't negotiate with yourself. If you get injured, train what you can. Train something complimentary that will give the injury a rest ie. If you're a runner and you fuck up your Achilles', start swimming or do more upper body. Don't give up. You can always lose it, but you can often get it back. Don't fear setbacks, adapt, get creative.

Hey man, I can relate. My two cents: Be forgiving of yourself. As much as you force yourself to work, force yourself to rest as well and vice versa. Forget the image of you from the past, that may never be. There's only the you now, the the better you you can be tomorrow. Failure is a better teacher than success. The stubborness of not stopping because it will seem "weak" is what actually makes stopping feel so good. Extremes are never good, balance is.

Yeh I agree. The idea of finding something that works for you is a great idea. Keto not the best for me personally, because I have a bitch of a time getting into ketosis. So if I break it I have to deal with all the shit that comes with getting back into keto. So for me the options with keto are, stick to it all the time (which I'd rather not) or deal with between 2-5 days of having no energy, being shitty, headaches, bad skin every time I break ketosis (I'd also rather not do that). So the best option is for me to try something else. It's about finding the balance.

the psychological state has never been worse for people trying to improve themselves either. there has never been more distractions, whether it is hobbies, social media, or long work days(including commute). The standards for 'fit' are gradually raising, at least for men. Junk food has never been more available, as well as smokes, alcohol, and drugs. Instant gratification has been programmed into us now with achievements/trophies, google, file sharing, likes, upvotes, pay-to-win games, etc. You can call people "weak", but not only does it not solve the problem, you add to it. Especially these days with all time highs of depression, anxiety, and suicides. May also notice mass shootings have become a bit routine, and having mini riots on streets and in colleges. Everyone is being nurtured into a constant cycle of panic, nihilism, and sadism. The mentally ill are now the overwhelming majority.

Case Died Well, that's ok. It's the best way to start a keto diet, to let yourself overeat for the first month. The real danger is letting yourself become hungry, as that increases your chances of breaking down and eating carbs. The key is to substitute. When you want a pancake, eat a steak. Don't worry about calories, just be damn sure you never go over 20g net carbs in a day, and stay away from alcohol. After the first month, if you never cheat carbs, you will stop getting cravings for food. Hunger becomes a vague sense that you require nutrients, nothing more. Then, it's very easy. Just never, ever go over 20g net carbs in a day, and it will get easier and easier. Having even one cheat day brings back the cravings and makes it much harder.
@roberttaylor8906

@@cowboyflipflopped is 20g of carbs as a cap really so necessary? I've read that that's simply the guideline they used for the medical diet for kids with epilepsy back in the 1920s or whatever, I don't think that low of a carb intake is actually necessary, especially if you work out regularly and thus keep muscle glycogen depleted. I've heard of high level athletes maintaining keto even with over 100 grams of carbs a day, but I haven't seen specific test results from those anecdotes. I agree with Joe in part, he needs some flexibility in his argument though, because not everybody has the same mindset. Food is very addictive, there is a science that goes in behind a companies' products. Financial resources are an issue, it's not a coincidence that poorer people are less healthier. Behavioural eating doesnt help; food does comfort depression, anxiety and other mental-health problems in the short-term, but it's not a helpful long-term solution. Research also suggests that sustaining a specific diet or lifestyle is boring to most people. There's not enough stimuli, because it's repetitive, especially to intelligent or easily-bored people. Scientifically, it is what the guy alluded too, about hormonal balances. Don't get me wrong, lazy and undisciplined people do exist and do make up a large number of people who are unhealthy, but it's not as simple as saying that people are ill-disciplined.
@tiredoftheliesalready
@tiredoftheliesalready 2 жыл бұрын
Food itself is not "very addictive"; processed food (and fast food in particular) are designed to be, because it keeps them selling things. For myself, it has been less than a month and a half of calorie counting, and because of that, I stopped eating fast food and sugary foods, because I wanted to actually not feel like I was starving. All in all, I've not missed it after the first week or so. Well...I had Arby's tonight; I didn't feel like cooking, we had company, and the limited-time Diablo Dare sandwiches were still available locally. As someone who loves spicy food, and cannot stand the mediocre spice that we often get, I wanted to try it. So, we got the food. I had most of a sandwich (brisket), and two bites of the chicken sandwich. I had maybe between a snack and small size-worth of the fries, and some of a small vanilla shake. Already, I feel like garbage; not because of the spice, milk, fats, or sugars (all of those I have in moderation on my calorie monitoring), but because my body is no longer used to the garbage that it really is. I feel like if we spend even a few weeks consciously eating healthier items, our cravings and desires begin to self regulate. For example, the other day, I greatly enjoyed something I would've hated just two months ago: Full-fat yogurt with a small bit of stevia, and a ripe banana. It was just as pleasant as eating a candy bar was only two months back, and far healthier. Getting back to the point, when we do cheat after our body begins to adjust, we get a reminder of what our body really "thinks" of those processed foods, delicious flavors and addictive qualities be damned. I believe that, for many people, the issue is both the lack of trying something different, along with the lack of discipline, which keeps them going back to fast food and unhealthy foods, which tends to make them also overeat calorically, if not quantitatively.

They're missing a big piece: People are generally no less disciplined today than they were 150 years ago, when NO ONE was obese. The culture, availability, low cost & ease of access to processed food in developed countries overwhelms the ability of a HUGE number of people to avoid it. Finger pointing only at the people for being "weak" is missing the forest for the trees. Many of these people are highly disciplined and successful in other aspects of life. And yet they STILL stand little chance to avoid processed food, and the person of low socioeconomic status stands zero chance.

Joe hit the nail on the head, I started to diet on Jan 1st and changed my whole outlook on food and exercise. I was 20 stone 3lbs and 7 months later I am 16 stone 10lbs, I still have 3 stone to go. I fast 22 hours Monday to Friday eating before 6pm and have a meal of 1200 calories max. Saturday I Hest healthy in the day and have a treat meal in the evening, like a Chinese or kebab. Sunday I eat when I'm hungry but not not unhealthy food. Then Monday start again. Fasting Monday to Friday was hard for a month now I don't think of food until 4pm now and it's becoming my new found relationships with food. Once I had lost 2 stone I started exercising 3 times a week and now my garage is a gym. You can do it, its just that first step, I was overweight for 8 years and even the 3 and half stone makes a huge difference to your standard of living. Trust me it's easy when your willing to make a change for yourself and knowbody else.

Weight loss isn’t magic. If you’re gaining weight but doing everything “right”, then your methods may need to change. Metabolism doesn’t actually effect as much as people think it does. There’s a reason why thin people are thin, and it’s not because they’re magically thin and can eat 2 pizzas 5 pints of ice cream and 4 hot dogs every day without gaining weight. I changed my nutrition (from fast food to healthy food) and began working out 4 times a week as well as jogging... I never even once have felt the urge to give up apart from the obvious cheat day every couple weeks. I never even considered that behaviour to be an "outlier". Once you lose the weight, you feel guilty cheating. You don't want to throw away your hard work. If you lose 5-10 lbs, I guess you don't really have that "anchor of guilt"

I believe self-discipline is something you built up with practice, over time. I am not, by far, a disciplined person..but I got better over time, I am making better and better choices and sometimes I fall, but I try again. And it's not just a matter of self-discipline. It's also a matter of your thinking systems that allows you or don't allow you to do certain things. So, in order to change, you have to shift some paradigms first.

At the end of the day I just can't help thinking there over thinking this shit. People just fall into two categories, the people that just do it and the ones that don't. It's almost as though there's just to much information so really the more you know the less you know. People just have to think of health and fitness as a journey with know destination, it's forever. This culture is saturated in quick fixes and everyone has the answer how to get there. One size doesn't fit all and diets are all just a subterfuge to keep the fatties on an eternal hamster wheel. I say take the long view, workout everyday like you mean it and enjoy your life along the way! Return to basics, there's no substitute for hard work and discipline.

I am not speaking weakness when I say sustainability is key. I used to think like Joe and obviously he got to where he is become of that mindset but there is no need to work against your willpower. You can put that energy to adhere to a diet elsewhere. There is no need to go mental to stay lean. Because if adherence wasn’t an issue then cheat meals shouldn’t be allowed either because that’s just a lack of discipline at a smaller scale. It is a lot different if cheat meals were allowed when cravings become extreme to stay sane or to exercise eating out whenever you want without letting that bother you, turn into a eating challenge or jeopardize your entire diet.

The diet being like that allows you to have a slice of pizza once in a while. Long as it stays in the calorie limit. And thus it's much easier to stay on the diet. And just from that diet I've lost 40lbs. And I'm still losing weight. In the next 3 or 4 months I'll be at my goal. No need to make being healthy a punishing miserable endeavor.

You can also take it as 14,000 calories per week. The more time you're willing to spend fasting, the more high-calorie meals you can eat. I tend to eat one huge meal and one snack every day, and keep it to 2000 calories in a 24hr period. However, if I really want to pig-out, I can do it, so long as I fast before and after sufficiently to keep my weekly caloric intake at 14,000 or less. I hit my goal weight 11 months ago, and have maintained it this way.

OK references the set point when you lose weight and a timeframe, also keep in mind that the 1 to 2 year mark is tremendous because people have to go through holidays, birthdays, change of weather, all kinds of situations that can throw them off, but if they maintain throughout that they have allowed that eating style to become their new lifestyle. Set point theory also Has a lot to do with your emotional status and what you are emotionally and physically used to, not necessarily happy or comfortable with. Also the fact that every six months we have refreshed our cells....so if you’re holding your new weight, your new lifestyle and your new mindset past that mark at the very least you have reset a lot about your body and your metabolism.

This is why people are now adopting a long term "low carb" diet, which is much like keto but more manageable.

Alot of people who have been on a ketogenic diet and want to come off for a vacation or temporarily regain alot of weight very quickly is because thier bodies have been so insulin sensitive for a long time, and now they're eating alot of carbs and the body just rushes to store all of it as fat. Thats why you have to do a slow process of introducing the carbs back into your diet, even if it is before a vacation begins.

Sustainability comes from what you’re used to. Sustainability is different for everyone is different is BECAUSE of the why they think. The way you think is effected by diet, experiences, exercise, and basically EVERYTHING.

it is a discipline issue - holidays you eat different but you just go right back to normal healthy eating lifestyle/diet pattern and everything is good again
