The dude is from Canada he should be speaking good English lol 😂
I love George, I come also from Quebec like him, and in some regions here, people will never speak a word of English (it's taught in school, but it's a second language: most people can understand english) in their life and live a happy/fulfilled life, no problem. That being said, I'm kinda surprised - knowing how much he has traveled and how much his life is in the USA now - that he didn't picked up a better accent over time. Funny how he doesn't sound like he can totally fuck anybody up ;-). Even his french is very basic, almost uneducated. Nonetheless, you realize immediately the guy has a sharp mind. When he speaks in french, he conveys his ideas much better... 😉

The Bruce lee quote “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” rings true.
@WRjockey3 жыл бұрын
That's VERY true. I was a TKD black belt. At our weekly hour-long sparring class, I would always end up sparring a local cop who came for the sparring class. He was 4-5 inches taller than me and had a greater reach with both hands and legs. He threw relatively few techniques. But his main one was a simple front kick, that he threw with excellent timing. I had such a hard time because every time I'd try to get inside on him, he'd throw that front kick and get me in the ribs with it. I used to get angry. And from that I learned that anger is not helpful in that type of situation. Ultimately I had to throw some fakes and use those to get inside on him, that was the only way I could hit him with anything.
@patriciajin62062 жыл бұрын
@@WRjockey Can you tell me your experience of learning TKD and how you got to that level. I like to know about peoples martial art story.
@WRjockey2 жыл бұрын
@@patriciajin6206 Sure. I started at 19. I was in college then and had a lot of free time. I went to TKD classes 3-5 times/week and trained ALL the time. I attended a more traditional school - the emphasis was on technique. We spent a lot of time on forms. We also sparred, but it wasn't like the point sparring crap you see in the Olympics. (terrible technique!) I learned about managing distance, using angles, and setting up techniques with combinations. At testings, we had to do forms, plus sparring and board breaking at blue-belt level and above. I got my black belt in about 2.5 years and kept training about another 3.5 years. It was a great experience and I loved it.

@@shanemathew6364 Well in Canada it's one of the two official languages and if your first language is French, you learn English in school from an early age. Of course, learning in school only takes you so far, hence his ridiculous accent. But some like me then place themselves or are placed by circumstance in an English speaking environment (in my case, I did two years of school in English starting at 17 years old) and improve tremendously in such circumstances. For others, it just never sticks, or at least proper pronunciation doesn't.
@Zombie-lx3sh4 жыл бұрын
@@shanemathew6364 KZfaq and Netflix didn't exist when I was learning English and neither did they when GSP learned it. Hollywood movies in Quebec are unfortunately dubbed in French so no help at all. But still, he's Canadian and therefore at least learned the basics of English in school before ending up in an environment (the UFC) where he had to speak it. He probably wasn't very interested in learning it when he was in school however, and on top of that his teachers probably weren't very good.

I’m happy GSP brought this up. I trained in Tae Kwon Do for many years and when I saw Joe’s counter back kick it blew my mind. It’s by far the most powerful one I’ve ever seen. He folds bags when he trains as his technique is perfect. The traditional Tae Kwon Do counter back kick is the deadliest kick in martial arts. It’s literally deadly.

Old-school Taekwondo has some of the strongest strikes ever invented. That turning side kick is straight out of an action movie, Joe knocked that guy clean off of his feet. It's hilarious when GSP says "that kick should be illegal" and "is he okay? Is that guy still alive?", hahaha. But at the same time, the knee-down style back kick is still really really powerful too, and it's faster and less telegraphed. It may not be as strong as a turning side kick, but it's still a lot harder than a Thai style middle kick (which in turn is a lot harder than a Taekwondo style roundhouse kick), and has caused a lot of clean one-hit knockouts in high level Taekwondo, kickboxing, and Kyokushin karate. It's way more common to see knee-down in those sports -- in fact, I don't think I've ever seen anyone besides Joe use the turning side kick style.

This is a very accurate comment. I studied Tae Kwon Do, Uechi Ryu and Kempo for about 20 years and then trained Muy Thai with a guy that fought professionally in Thai Land. You did a very good job of explaining the differences between spinning back kick vs turning side kick and roundhouse vs middle kick. The only thing I could add is that Karate and Tae Kwon Do seem to require you to chamber your knee to belt level before executing their kicks. Like knee up, kick. Two step process. Thai styles seem come straight from the hips. 1 step process. Whip the hip and the leg just comes through like a club. The chambering of the knee before the kick is what makes the Karate style kicks more telegraphed.

@@rbarbetta1978 the chambering of the knee can be a huge advantage though at the same time. If you've got a high, strong, solid chamber before you kick its very hard to get around or through it.
@rbarbetta19783 жыл бұрын
@@nialloshea4323 I 100% agree that there are advantages to a good strong chamber. I am at my core a traditional Karate guy and I love strong, crisp fundamentals. Especially for training. However, there are always tradeoffs. When I'm fighting a Kareteka, as soon as I see that strong chamber... I kick their back leg with a thai style kick. All their weight is on it and it can be devastating. That being said, it is important to assess your opponent's system quickly and perceive how to attack it's weaknesses. Not an easy thing to do in the middle of a fight. But worth training diligently to understand.
@nialloshea43233 жыл бұрын
@@rbarbetta1978 That is very true. but for me personally in ITF taekwondo you cant kick the legs or sweep them as it will result in foul therefore you lose a point. So in my experience it is very tricky to fight around. but like you said there are a lot of ways around it so in MMA or karate it definitely isnt as effective.

GSP was one of the greatest athletes ever in the UFC. He could absolutely learn such a devastating kick. It's just that no one taught him, that's all. I learned TKD in the same era as when Rogan learned it. My school was the same way. Full power kicks. Never did point sparring. We broke boards with our kicks, regularly. The most boards I broke at once was 5 (3.75-4" of wood) with a jump reverse side kick. (kind of like Rogan's kick, but airborne) That kick had devastating power. You could break someone's sternum with such a kick..

As soon as Joe hit that first spinning sidekick GSP starts asking him if he can record video of him doing it on his phone (so he could analyze it closely later on). It took one kick for Joe to make him a believer.
