I grew up during the 90s in a city in South Eastern Poland, built around a sulfur mine that got closed after the fall of communism. 50% unemployment, abandoned buildings, like 20% of the population left the country, people were making 50$ a month and had to survive somehow. You could buy a gun in each and every single street market there was for pocket change. If your parents were born in the 70s go and ask them about how life changed in the 90s...

Yeah as much as I like Henry, he freely admits he is a news guy and a reader. Sometimes you have to read outside the typical curriculum to find out how the world truly is and unfortunately that doesn't happen enough, most of the time. He is smart and knows a good bit but he has some problems breaking free from the false narratives that shape our understanding. Unfortunately those have been shaped into the approved reading list or the Oprah book of the month club. If you don't have the experience to know it is there you just don't know what you don't know. It has little to do smarts in that regard.

These people who admire these strong men don’t realise that’s the last thing you want. Sure you want a competent and capable leader but you leaders shouldn’t be above criticism. That’s what makes people’s lives better, the ability to critique their leaders and the situation. My wife is from the Philippines and the place is a shithole, not because of the people or the landscape, the people are friendly and industrious and it’s the most beautiful place in the world, but because the government is so corrupt that people live in the most appalling conditions and anyone who dares to criticise the government end up with a bullet in their head. That’s not hyperbole, it’s reality,

@Len1245 жыл бұрын
Sure, it's a spot of ignorance, but Henry Rollins has a fairly broad sense of world events, cultures, and systems beyond the US--at least for an American. He's on your side (based on what you listed as Slovenia's advantages over the US); I highly doubt he meant it as an insult. Some Americans still view Eastern European countries in light of the economic problems of the post-Communist 90s and the 2008 crisis--though your country has faired relatively well. He is fairly aware of current events though, so he may have been referring to the corruption protests of this decade. Either way, don't feel bad. Here in Canada we see the US as a "rough part of the world".
@danielcole86095 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'll stick to paying for my health care and seeing the doctor whenever I want however many times I want
@Len1245 жыл бұрын
Alright, us in the developed world will stick to our universal healthcare while also seeing the doctor whenever we want and however many time we want--yet still somehow pay less for our healthcare from our taxes than the US while having superior quality healthcare (look that shit up). People in the US, compared to Canada and the UK anyway (can't speak for Slovenia), end up seeing their doctors and getting checkups far less for fear of cost and effects on insurance premiums. We go at the slightest hint of anything and have mandated sick benefits/time, maternity/paternity leave, and vacation, and therefore tend to catch potentially life-threatening disorders earlier. The US is the laughing stock of the world. I don't mean individuals, I have family in the States, I just mean its backwards economic system and political demographics. There was a time when the US was an inspiration to the rest of the world and a positive example (aside from your fixation on race, apartheid, and Japanese concentration camps), but many of the second world countries have caught up and what used to be called the first world countries have surpassed the stagnant and declining US. Following WWII, your country traded the moral high-ground (democracy) for the strategic high-ground (hegemony).

Canada's Healthcare System sucks there's a reason why they always come down here to get it when they need it I know people that live in Canada they can't just go to the doctor whenever they want and the rest of the world gets to have all sorts of free things because they don't need a defense budget cause mother America takes care of that for them 😂
