This video is pretty special to me but in a bittersweet way. My mom was the director of animal health at the cincinatti zoo in the 80's but after 20 years of working with the primates she died of cancer. Joe's description of chimps and monkeys reminds me of my mother, who always warned us that even though we love all monkeys, monkeys are incapable of love and could eat our faces if we weren't fair to them. Miss you, mom.

I once went to the zoo in Amsterdam on mushrooms and found myself watching the monkeys for over an hour. I was overwhelmed with a sense of sadness and loneliness. I was truly connecting with these beings on another level until one shat in it's hand and began to eat it. Then I decided to move on and look at the fish

I didn’t find out what a chimpanzee was capable of until my thirties. I’m not sure it’s widespread enough why it’s a terrible idea for people to get too close to these animals. Admire and respect these animals from a safe distance

I'm not sure if it was the same guy but many years ago I was on a cruise and there was a man on the ship with us who we would see periodically, often times in the hot tub or pool. He was deformed in the most horrible ways, missing fingers, toes, his face had been reconstructed as well as large sections of skin on his arms, legs and torso. He was always accompanied by what I assume was some sort of nurse or aid who helped him with just about everything. Rumor on the ship was the he was the victim of a well-publicized, multiple chimp attack. I think it was the same guy.

The scariest thing you can see in your life, and I saw it personally was when I looked at a chimp. He was inside someone's home, I was outside looking at him in the kitchen. He had gone to fetch an orange, as his human companion had asked him. This was actually in a trailer. So, the chimp went and I was outside the window, and he opened the fridge and picked up an orange. Then he picked his nose, sort of looked at the booger, and just like a naughty child, he ate it! What we see is the chimp has a brain of a 4 or 5 years old, but with muscles stronger than any human. And unlike a human, he isn't going to grow up and learn restraint or right and wrong, it's just going to get really bad, and he will have his murderous rage for any reason he wants

I would say that animals do. Elephants never forget. Blue jays have been known to get revenge on people after significant amounts of time if they had their nest messed with. Dogs, cats, horses and other animals remember if they like someone or not. Could. Have a lot of time pass and they may still feel aggressive or hesitant towards certain people and probably other animals as well.

I think Planet of the Apes traumatized Joe as a kid and he made a whole career just to vent about it

Once I went to a zoo and seen many big powerful animals but when i got to the chimps area they were like in a riot or something and I freaked out so much that I had to left cause the way they were pushing the cage and their face expression made me feel so small and also thought they could make it out the cage at any moment. One of the most scary situations of my whole life. I can't imagine encountering just one of them in the wild...

One of my dogs was snipped at an early age, he's 8 now and still very active and intelligent.

In a zoo in Norway there was this monkey that managed to take a keychain with lots of keys from one of the zoo keepers. So the zoo keeper took a banana and gave it to the monkey as a trade. Instead of giving back all the keys, the moneky took off one of the keys and gave it to the zoo keeper.

This brings me so much joy, never seen joe being this passionate.

An elephant killed a women and during her funeral, the elephant returned and trampled the casket. I'm certain elephants can hold grudges. It's kind of like how a dog would be scared of a man that hits it everyday.

I knew a guy that worked in a Zoo. When he started, he was warned to be wary of the Chimps. He said they were the one animal that scared the hell out of him. The way they looked at him, as if trying to figure him out. Part of his job was to feed them. He was told never to put his hand in the cage. They would give them a cup of milk and leave it just outside the cage. Chimp would take it, drink it and leave it back tru the bars. The first time he fed them, this one Chimp, knowing that he was new, dropped the cup just inside the cage. He was about to reach inside the cage and he realised what was happening. The chimp would have ripped the arm from him. .............. Not to be kept as pets. Post Edit - this story I heard first hand from the guy himself. It was Dublin Zoo in Ireland.

My guess is that Joe spends more time thinking about chimp attacks than the average person.

When my son turned 13 and got taller than me, I went through the exact same thing with him. I'm missing fingers and he never listens. He is now 15. I went from looking 12 to looking 57 years old. 3:09 finally someone has articulated motherhood.

Dolphins definitely have a language. Researchers have noticed that dolphins seem to gossip about one another when the other is off hunting or something. The researchers were able to tell this because they also realized that dolphins in a pod together have names for one another. And when another dolphin was gone, other dolphins would be heard saying that dolphins name while he was gone. So the researchers deduced that those dolphins were talking about the other dolphin in their absence.

Joe has a wonderful insight into the chimp world. He went to them. Lived with them. Learned from them. Loved them. Mated with them.

Anybody interested in chimp behavior needs to look up the Gombe chimp war of 1974-1978. The tribe split up and the larger part started to systematically hunt and kill all the other males until they wiped them out. Then they took the females hostage and took the territory and didn’t have any more conflicts after they wiped them all out.

The way Joe described a zoo is how I feel about modern society. Apartments and suburbs are like human zoos. It's like They Live when there are invisible aliens who come to visit earth and look at us in our little enclosures. Oh look at him sitting on his balcone he's so cute.

Neutering a dog while it's an adult like that can mess it up. Neutering as a puppy rarely makes any kind of drastic impact on their personality. Both labradors I grew up with were neutered and were still full of life and energy. One of them still tried to hump other dogs afterward lol

Tigers have been known to keep grudges, theres that story bout a guy who shot and injured a tiger and stole its kill. So the tiger tracked him back to his cabin, trashed his cabin, waited about 10-15 hours for him to come home, then killed him. Lions could be capable of this too, and many other animals too

Im just imagining my 2 year old nephew with the strength of the hulk. Kid goes unhinged at the oddest things. It would be terrifying.

That comparison with children and the chimps reactions with emotion is spot on, imagine if we didn’t have language or a way to communicate that behavior would only get worse.
