My mother just passed away from stomach and bone cancer. Very, very painful disease. The only thing that could touch her pain and give her pain free days was Fentanyl. Liquid morphine, Dilaudid or Oxycodone would only bring her pain down to maybe a 7 out of 10. Fentanyl is a very dangerous drug but definitely has a place in modern medicine. I do not know why anyone would choose to do this drug recreationally because it pretty much incapacitates you from doing anything other than laying around, but for a terminally ill patient Fentanyl is a god-send.

I was a heroin/fentanyl addict. Basically, when people's tolerances get so crazy out of hand they search out fentanyl over heroin because it's much stronger. Today, there is so much fentanyl out there sold as heroin, which is what is killing everyone. It's not as euphoric as heroin, but fentanyl definitely feels really good still.

You see, my condition is pancreatitis and it's exceptionally painful, fentanyl does nothing for the pain but dilaudid does. I guess it's how we process different medications.

lol someone clearly has no idea what they're talking about. just because your mom took a medication doesn't mean you know anything about it... its just a coincidence that other opiates didnt work for her, i guarantee it was a dosage or personal issue...fentanyl is dosed in a way that its literally a joke compared to IVing street heroin or something else strong, yes you will be "knocked out" or w.e but same with anyone who takes any opiate with no tolerance, once you do have a tolerance fentanyl is basically unusable unless you IV it. taking it thru patches isnt going to hurt or kill anyone with a tolerance. but really no point explaining opiates to kids on youtube who will never understand

When my wife was dying of cancer fentanyl was the pain medicine she used. I put a patch on her shoulder that was 25 micrograms. That was 3 days of medication. I had to use gloves when putting it on her and wash my hands directly after. It was a great drug. Watching someone in their 30’s wish for death from pain is not something I care to repeat.

Dear Joe. I had Fentanyl patches for back pain. It was wonderful, so much relief so fast. One day while changing my patch, I stuck (stupid) the new patch on the tip of my tongue. Fentanyl must have gotten into my system. My wife tells me she heard a boom in the cellar and came down to find me flat on the floor, blood coming from my forehead which I had bashed falling down face first. When I woke up in hospital, they told me I was technically dead when the ambulance came. I had no blood pressure, no heartbeat and was not breathing. It seems the EMR's revived me after four tries with the defibrillator and assisted breathing. I don't remember a thing besides waking up in the ER with doctors staring at me. In September 2016, I died. Thanks to the EMR's and doctors, I'm back. I will never touch fentanyl again. It is just too dangerous but for some extreme pain, it works wonders, but only in a hospital. Sincerely, The man who died and rose again.

Fentanyl is AMAZING for pain. A few months back I dislocated my shoulder and was in such extreme pain that even just the weight of my own arm would bring me to tears (i have a fairly high pain tolerance so thats really saying something) I was given fentanyl nasally (not sure the doaage, but it worked just like any nose spray) and within minutes my pain was completely gone. I didnt even feel the doctor pop it back into place. If used properly and safely, it can be amazingly helpful for those experiencing extreme pain. On the flip side, its incredibly dangerous if used improperly. Never abuse fentanyl.

These people that are dying from it should never be taken it in the first place. But the government has made it to where we don't have any other options!! If they need hydrocodone or oxycodone it would have fixed the problem but the government is doing this to us! 80% of people cannot get the pain medication they needed including me and we have massive need and medical documentation saying it's necessary! But the government makes it to where are doctors can't give us what we need! So the drug dealers are in cartels just stepped in to fill the supply and demand in the only one able to do that is the fentanyl cuz everything else is ten times the price and hard to make! You know what as long as cigarettes and alcohol are still legal I think our government should shut the hell up and stop trying to tell us how to run our bodies! They don't have our interests in mind for one damn second it's all about lining their pockets! How many people have alcohol and tobacco killed in the last week! This is all just one big gaslight for the government taking our rights away and telling us what to do with our own body!the government doesn't want fentanyl here because nobody's going to buy oxycodone and dilaudid for $80 a pill if they can get fentanyl for $3 a pill. It is literally that simple!!

I spent many years working in compounding pharmacy and used to prepare fentanyl (as well as sufentanil and carfentanil) in several dosage forms for people afflicted with cancer and other debilitating conditions with severe pain. These molecules absolutely have legitimate medical uses and I have witnessed this first hand in patients and their improvement in quality of life. The problem is with all of the clandestine preparation (e.g. illicit Chinese labs) and ease of access to these compounds in the street through those illicit channels. The general public does not understand just how potent and dangerous these molecules can be and certainly at the tiny amount which can cause an opioid naive individual to overdose.

I've been on fentanyl for 7 years it is not a fun drug to take but being a quadriplegic and in constant pain it does help me feel normal. I know a lot of people that abused it and eventually quit but will no longer be the same. When I started it I realized that I was making a life long decision. The problem is that it was easier to prescribe than pills. Personally I don't think it should be taken outside a hospital because of the risk for abuse

It was hard to get medication at the time and I self medicated for years. Eventually I quit everything for a year then got pneumonia and went into a coma. They had me on iv fentanyl for 6 months and when I woke from the coma I was severely dependent on fentanyl even Propofol. All without my consent. I've been doing prescription fentanyl for about four years now. I started on the 12mg patches, putting them on my tongue, maybe twice a week. Today, I'm doing between 37.5mg to a 50mg patch a day and I am spending about £300 a week buying peoples scripts and I wouldn't wish my addiction on anybody. My doctor says if I don't stop, I'll be dead in 12-18 months if I don't overdose first. This is the first year I've tried to stop and I've relapsed about 8-9 times. I used to think getting off it was the hard part but it's the staying off it, it's the hard part so good luck to anyone trying.

Man good for you!! But from a guy i know he tells me you never stop craving or thinking about it. I told him thats because he hangs around guys that still use it. @@format.c5930 Hanging around with people who still use/talk about using is probably a big part of it. I no longer get cravings, but I suppose some times I will see something that reminds me of when I used to use but it's not a craving and there's no desire to use there. Anything in our life that we have memories of can be brought to the forefront of our mind with the right circumstances. When I first got clean I stopped hanging out with everyone I knew who used and I would make myself watch movies where people would use so that I could learn to handle the "triggers". It worked for me, but everyone is different. People say that a lot btw. That "we'll think about it for the rest of our lives!", but that's just defeatist and part of the addict mindset. I mean, you could think about anything you've ever done for "the rest of your life". Games you played as kids, friends you had, etc. Not just drugs. At a certain point, the fear of what a relapse would do to you will overcome your desire to use and that's when the real freedom begins. It takes a long, long, long time. Tell your friend to look up "the hedonic treadmill". It will help him to understand the way his brain's dopamine systems have been rewritten so to speak. The brain is called neuroplastic for a reason. We can undo most of the damage, maybe not all of it, but most of it. I hope he get's better. Ultimately, thinking about when you used to use and craving to go out and use are two completely different things. In the beginning it's just harder to see the distinction. The gap gets wider the farther away from it you get. And eventually, it's just a bad memory. To me, it feels like a dream (or rather nightmare) that I woke up from. And it's even hard to recall like a dream is. It's all fuzzy when I look back. Damn, if you made it this far into this than thanks. Don't know why I poured out all that.

Why doesn’t The Government release information on how many people that have lost their lives to Alcohol or Alcohol related incidents?? All I hear about is the Opiod Epedemic And pain medication is responsible for all Opioid Related deaths?? I call Bullshit on that. And when did our Government start caring about drug addicts anyway?? Alcohol is the most dangerous drug in the world. It’s been destroying families and killing people for years as well. And Another piece of information which is true is that a person Detoxing from Alcohol can Die. People detoxing from opioids can’t. I broke Three toes 6 months ago and I could hardly walk. And I went to the ER and I got a prescription for Diclofenac which is a anti inflammatory. And I’m tired of hearing that drug addicts are breaking their limbs on purpose to get pain Medication. That’s Bullshit as well. Since you’re a Doctor explain this?? And if you reply your going to use some reasoning like people get hooked on pain medication and then they get shut off and go to Heroin. Just like a Alcoholic starts off with beer and switches to Vodka, Scotch , Rum. Oh BTW Alcohol is legal.

It’s time to make drugs safe to buy and use. To many people are dying. It’s crazy to think a safe dose is behind a counter yet people can’t access it. It all boils down to the money aspect. I can go to a doctor today and get any drugs my heart desires but I have to pay. This whole industry boils down to money and it’s so sad to see people dying when they don’t have to.

I've been on fentanyl patches for around 12 to 15 years through a pain management clinic. I've had six back of operations. At my worst point I was prescribed all sorts of medication from muscle relaxers to pain pills to depression medication, Etc. Within taking all of this medication I was taking 52 pills a day. That was 18 in the morning 18 and noon and 16 in the evening. I had to be under adult supervision because it was very easy for me to forget that I had already taken my medication and to retake my medication. I was in this stoned state for approximately three years. I have been told that I had done things that I have no recollection of doing and have made so many apologies but behold my family did not accept my apologies. That is something I had to get over. Since then, I have came down tremendously on my medication. I was on 75 mg of fentanyl duragesic patch. My Pain Management Center drop me down to 50 mg and then down to 35 mg which was a 25 mg and a 10 mg patch at the same time. Then I was drop down to 25 mg which I am at presently. I have decided since I am on Percocet, Mobic, Flexeril, which Mobic and flexeril are basically the same being muscle relaxers and also Fentanyl and Xanax. I have decided to try to wean myself off of Fentanyl. I sweat excessively, if I am working outside I would go through 3 shirts soaking wet with sweat in a day's time. I am leaning out with them now trying to get this under control. I have stopped taking my Fentanyl patches for 3 weeks now and I am still going through withdrawals. My stomach stays tore up and I am also trying to fight through the pain. I have been on narcotic medication for approximate 28 years and I am 50 years old so more than half of my life. Everyday that I have been off the patch has been a struggle. My pain management centers stated that if I came out the patch that he would increase my Percocet by two extra tablets per day so that is what I'm going for. I'm taking Percocet, duragesic fentanyl patches, Mobic, Xanax, Etc. I was 90 mme. I am not getting off of fentanyl because of being scared of death but instead I am getting off a bit because every third day I go through withdrawals freezing and sweating at the same time or feeling that my skin is on fire oh, that's the worst feeling. my feet also feel like they are on fire but that is from the neuropathy in my lower legs and feet. I wish that fentanyl was never invented or proscribed. Since I have stopped taking it I've been in bed for 3 weeks now and that really sucks. I do not know if I will continue to stay off the patch because I am in quite a lot of pain without it. people who abuse fentanyl has made it extremely rough for those of us who actually need it

I've worked with fentanyl and other high potency drugs in a legal sense, synthesising them for use in medicinal products and the levels of safety in place to prevent workers from being exposed to it is insane, we even have paramedics outside the lab at all times in full haz mat gear ready to rush in with antidote if you are accidentally exposed. To think you can safely use such a drug outside a professional environment is insanely nieve. And while fentanyl is incredibly strong at about 100x stronger than morphine in terms of opioid potency it is still relatively low, things like etorphine and carfentanil blow it out of the water.

Hi Joe- I’m a chronic pain patient that depends on fentanyl in an intrathecal pain pump and in Duragesic fentanyl patches. Fentanyl, along with hydromorphone and oxycodone, helped save my life and it’s an essential part of the medication regimen that allows me to function fairly highly - I am able to rehearse, record, gig and tour with The Dissidents and engineer, mix and produce other bands. The fact that fentanyl is potent but not sedating is fantastic. Opioids help lots of people like myself. To pain patients, opioids are akin to insulin for diabetics. But we’re caught in the crossfire of the crackdown on the “opioid epidemic.” Many pain patients are losing their physicians and insurance companies aren’t covering all or part of our medications. My heart goes out to people who have lost their loved ones to opioids and to addicts who have had their lives wrecked by their prescription opioid abuse. But people who truly need opioid pain medication should not suffer due to the crackdown on opioids. In the national discussion about prescription drug abuse, pain patients also need to have our voices heard - we can give a unique perspective on using opioids for what they are designed. Thanks to Hamilton Morris for a rational, nuanced explanation about fentanyl and other drugs. I love your comedy and podcast, Joe!! Peace Mike Dubose PS: Cannabis is an incredible adjuvant to my medications: it makes the opioids work harder and last longer, has great analgesic properties and helps stimulate my appetite when the pain makes me not want to eat. I wish that I could rely on cannabis alone. Alas, that’s not how my body chemistry works!

Telly, I think we are on the same page here on the dangers of the drug. Fentanyl works well in limited post op cases. Chronic opioid users actually decrease the amount of opioid receptors in their body, therefore the amount needed to feel the same previous effect increases. The problem is of course the addiction, the access to the drug, and the amount they use. Btw, I don't prescribe fentanyl.

Fentanyl has killed some of the strongest people i know oddly. While most of the weaker addicts simply plow along. Its really a big deal here in boston. Everyone is aware now but we arent totally done either we have a long way to go and i think madatory minimums for the dealers of the particular substance have to come into play.

Fentanyl allows people with some of the most painful terminals illnesses to die in relative comfort. I know, my friends mother died of stomach cancer last year and one of the nurses told him that only 20 years ago people who had what she had would be screaming in agony. But her death was mercifully free of pain. At least it wasn't so bad it stopped her sleeping. That's the benefit of fentanyl. When you are dealing with the pain of terminal cancer something being 50 times more potent than morphine actually has practical benefits.

Fentanyl is a good medicine. It's just a concentrated medicine. I agree with Hamilton. People who are in really severe pain take opioids like buprenorphine, oxymorphone, hydromorphone, hydrocodone, codeine and fentanyl just to function. These work very well and allow them to get out of bed, go to work, take a shower, pick up things off the floor or even to eat. Have you ever been in so much pain that you couldn't eat or drink? Or breathe? Or move your hand?

There are other ways to stay stopped with out a 12 step program. I will never bad mouth AA or NA because I've witnessed many friends get clean through it. But it is not for everyone! Legalize everything too.

The trouble with any addiction is that when you run out you'll try anything else to get you there. Fentanyl is on another level and it's just so bizarre to read/hear that when folks OD others will rush in to buy what they had taken, it's good for business, yet the dealers kill their clients. Strong alcohol does too, but slower.

I watched this podcast after watching the one on Kratom they are both very interesting, being that as a teen I was hit head on by a drunk driver which left with me with a laundry list of lifelong issues, one being serious constant pain. My pain management Dr and surgeons agreed a combination of Fentanyl patches and Oxy would be what would work best for me....maybe so. However they had me taking 200mcg Fentanyl transdermal patches to be changed every 48 hours along with up to 13 30mg Oxy tablets PER DAY! I found out someone I had been close friends with ten years previous was found dead with a 15mcg Fentanyl patch in her mouth. I decided I needed to do something different right away. Funny thing was none of the Dr’s who put me on these literally lethal doses of pain meds and kept me on them for over 6 years would help me get off of them. So I did it the hard way by myself. Even using Kratom and trying to wean off slowly I was seriously sick with withdrawals for a year and a half, I’ve never suffered medication withdrawals like that in my entire life nor even when I stopped using illegal substances shortly after the accident. IT WAS HELL. I’m now taking Kratom, yes I’m in a lot of pain but I don’t pry every night when I go to bed that I’ll get to see another tomorrow. Fentanyl should be reserved for only for those who truly need it and will likely NEVER have to suffer going off of it, and most definitely ONLY accept it in the lowest dose possible. I didn’t know any better then, I believed in my Dr’s...now I do my research.

Those withdrawals you had must have been absolutely fucking terrible. Those are the kinds of opiate withdrawals that kill people. Glad you switched to kratom though, I've been using 8 times a day everyday for 2.5 years and I don't feel like it negatively impacts my life whatsoever. It's not compulsive to re-dose, it doesn't make me high enough that I function much any different, it's just... enough ya know? Just enough to make it through.

Fentanyl is actually really useful in the medical setting for sedation because of its short acting properties. When someone is intubated and sedated you want something that will wear off quickly so you can easily wake them later to extubate them and get them off the ventilator

versus morphine your less likely to have an allergic reaction or unwanted side effects, it has a quicker onset with a shorter duration of action, it doesnt supress the respiratory system as much. makes for a great drug for field medicine that's why so many ems systems use it

Fentanyl does have a very narrow focused purpose. I've seen several friends in the death throws of a horrible cancer find temporary relief and the needed momentary lucidity to say their peace and tell their loved ones that they love them. To help with the kind of pain that cuts you off from the world to live in a solitary box of personal hell is reason enough for it's existence. It's abuse is inconsequential within that context. I cannot think of anything that makes me angrier than when I hear a so called medical professional moralize about prescribing stronger pain killers to a terminal patient. It's an awful thing to say, but any doctor that does deserves to die in that way and be denied similarly. Period.

I knew an anesthetist that used to keep the fentanyl he was supposed to dispose of post op. He was notorious for using balanced narcotic anesthesia (fentanyl/versed) and his patients woke up during surgery pretty often due to being under dosed. He overdosed and died, nobody was surprised. That was in the early 1980’s.
