Thanks so much for posting this. Been having problems with this for years with my current kit. These tricks work like a charm.

Hi again , I'm in the process of setting up a room to make some drum videos. Whatever I can do to help . Once it's up and running il do a vid. There's a few things happening BUT technic will really help. It ain't easy, I've been playing for 30years and stopped for 2 . Started up and found the problem you have.....like I said it's a few things but tech is best........foot control is everything. Though you can't have great foot control with an out of tune skin or beater weight.So it's a number of things. We'll get an answer don't panic. Rock On For Now 🤘 Saul

Oh man! Im gonna try this. I can't tell you how frustrating that little subtle bounce back has been! ive been exerting so much pressure trying to kick harder to really dig the beater into the head in order to not get the bounce back and im pretty sure I caused some damage to my joints lmao! I loosened the tension on my kick pedal as low as possible and loosened both bass heads and it still didnt go away. Ihope this works! Thanks for sharing!

I think it'll work for you buddy. If it doesn't please let me know. I'll see about finding another solution.

The other cause of the issue is head tension. Think about when you play a floor or a pillow compared to a tight marching snare
@markmcswain7293 Жыл бұрын
It's a very annoying problem, especially when recording and I've experienced dribble with both closed and ported resos. For me, best solution has been to record frequently and work on patterns that tend to cause dribble, like kick pattern in the song "Green-Eyed Lady". I play with fairly loose pedal spring tension, but enough to put beater halfway to drum head when foot is resting on it. And I don't bury the beater. I'm not convinced that drum tuning and/or heads compensate for what I perceive to be technique issues. Feet need to be worked on as much as hands if not more.

Interesting discussion here. I've had this issue even with a small kick though, .... I think it comes down to fixing technique and finding the perfect kick pedal action that's custom to how you play. It is very annoying though!! I can't record a song until I fix my technique or potentially try out a new front-head with a kickport... Geez...

I recently went hybrid and with a 22 inch mesh and with a hole in my resonant head my beater still bounces and adds 2-3 hits and its not my technique! I'm gonna try loosening my spring tension which will help but not eliminate my problem. I am going to get a piece of foam to mount to the inside of the beater head by using a light fabric strap that I will straddle across the drum and secure each end under the head and rim to hold it in place. It feels great testing it, I just hope it works and stays in place.
@adrianbort25643 жыл бұрын
Hi!,, Did you resolve The problem?
@bongo0423 жыл бұрын
@@adrianbort2564 It kinda worked. At first I was worried that I couldnt get it to stay tight against the beater head but I got it too tight then had to start over using a thinner piece of foam and not so tight against the head. Its not perfect but it does get rid of 90% of the bounce. I had another idea of a way to mount packing foam on the inside of the beater head but its too complicated to verbalize. Maybe I'll make a vid and post what I have now and the new idea?

Man I'm not to sure, I'm using mesh quite pratice heads and they are fully vented but I get a double hit at times still. I found it is my technique as well as venting the drum. ✌

Hey buddy. Do you by chance have a video demonstrating what happens? I'd be happy to try and help.
@GrizDrummer256 жыл бұрын
Thats the only way I've found to get rid of that beater flam too, but my ported head takes away a lot of the tone of the drum. Does the actual Kickport brand port affect the sound less than just having a Pearl reso with a hole on the side? I mean it's got the smooth edges, it was ported from the factory, just doesn't have the Kickport insert.
@soulintake3 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't think it's that big of a change. Unfortunately I've had a few kickports get loose and they will slide down a bit and then it sounds worse until you reposition it until it slides down again. I would probably go with a hole with reinforcement ring and that's it if I started over
@soulintake3 жыл бұрын
I mean if the dribble sound bugs you, you might not enjoy the rattle an older kickport could possibly make. I've heard them rattle on other drums in studios and a few on my own sets. Happy drumming! Edit: there are tricks some of the heavier players use to secure them in place but I think those methods add additional dampening and take away the benefits. The gasket they use holds tight out of the box until it just doesn't anymore

This has been problem for me since I've started using those footblaster triggers and my left beater does little bounce and it registers. And I am using heel toe so I need tighter spring etc. But I got my bassdrum literially filled to max with pillows and such. So I'll try to take off some of the pillows and and see will it keep doing it now when I have the air flying out
@JosephScarpinoOnDrums2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your struggles. Let me know if this works for you. If you ever decide to play without triggers definitely try a Sledgepad instead of pillows in there.

Yup. If you burry your beater or sit leaning forward on your toes then you'd definitely have to over correct that bad technique.

Very interesting. I've played a 20 with a small port pre made on an aquarian head with medium additional muffling, high spring tension.... No problem. Now I have a 24 with a kick port, little to no muffling and medium tension and it lives to bounce a little when I dig into it, very annoying. Going to add a bit more muffling, and try even less tension. If that doesn't work then maybe I need an inch or two larger port hole? Annoying!
@GrizDrummer253 жыл бұрын
I've just recently loosened my spring tension and loosened my batter head - man what a difference! Beater stays put and I get less ringing overtone in the drum :) It's really boosted my confidence in my playing. Same muffling - which is minimal - a thin watermelon pillow that just barely touches both heads, and my widest EMAD Ring.

@@GrizDrummer25 so I wonder if we can assume you are better off with deeper bass drum if you want to tighten heads up more, or have little or no muffling and with a higher tension spring on the pedal- and want to avoid beater dribble
@GrizDrummer253 жыл бұрын
@@soulintake Well I think it's the tight batter head that causes the beater dribble. It depends how deep your drum is, but overall it seems the way to go is a batter head just tight enough to get some tone coming through and a pretty loose pedal spring. From there dampen/muffle to taste :)

How could I find the problem if it’s a mesh head electronic bass drum
@JosephScarpinoOnDrums3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron. Funny you ask because I was just toying with this. The mesh head is a little more difficult to deal with. I found I had to balance the trigger sensitivity and the head tension as well. I kept unwanted kick hits from the trigger being overly sensitive. I made the mesh head pretty soft and loose and until I found a spot where I felt comfortable. If you have a tendency to "bury your beater" in the head, you may still have problems. Try messing with those settings and let me know how it goes.
@adrianbort25645 жыл бұрын
So......let me question it,... It is all about the Kickport.??? I have the same problem.....I loosed the spring,,l loosed the batter head also...no way. Tama iron cobra....pedal.
@JosephScarpinoOnDrums5 жыл бұрын
Hey Adrian. Thanks for commenting. Think about it...you are kicking the crap out of the batter head and the air inside has no where to go but back and forth. Allowing the air to escape from a reinforced port reduces the internal sound/air wave created from the quick. I have given this little tip time and time again and the response I get is the same. It really helped. Your batter head should b somewhat loose and your sympathetic outward facing had should be pretty darn tight. You'll get a great sound this way.
