Satch is like a chameleon. He just fits seamlessly into whatever project is put his way. Be it jamming with another 3 guitar players at a tribute gig, or replacing legends from other bands. Mick Jagger loved him and wanted him to stay, i dare say the guys from DP would say the same thing. He has his own style and way of doing things, but isnt afraid to be slave to the riff if thats what the tune demands. A professional of epic proportions.

Ritchie's played a "pizzicato" style that involved picking with his right hand everything that he fretted with his left coupled with a very clean guitar sound. Also the fact that Jon Lord had a distorted organ helped. In fact, the fret board on Ritchie's Stratocasters were rounded out with a file and got deeper and deeper as you went up the neck. This helped develop the style that we know today as distinctly Ritchie. Satriani's style is completely unique in its own right but very different.

Not many people know that about RB. Kudos to you for pointing that out. Back in the 70's I once read in a gutair mag what Richie did to his strats. He said you could wreck the gutair if you didn't know what you were doing.

I remember this time...I saw him at the 'Bronco Bowl" in Dallas TX after he made his mark with DP and did the solo thing. At the time I thought he was ultra famous and thought it was wierd he was at a bowling alley...a 2000 person venue at best. Coolest , down to earth player ever.

@PAULOcbi If you happen to be blessed with a natural ability to play an instrument, then you can be a Blackmore or a Tommy Aldridge or a Susan Boyle, all musicians who can create magic with no formal training. For us mere mortals, we need lessons. In fact, I once attended a drum clinic with Aldridge. During a Q&A, he gave the following advice to beginning musicians, "Take lessons. Definitely take lessons. I believe I could have done a lot more if I had taken lessons."

I was being considered years ago to audition for Ten Years After. They sent a song list, & wanted video... The songs were no problem, as Alvin Lee was possibly my favorite guitarist of all time, but they weren’t looking for a sound-alike, they wanted to experiment. My thought was how do you improve on that legacy? It was a no-win situation, so I declined their invite to audition...

@PAULOcbi "He was 11 when he got his first guitar. His father bought it for him on certain conditions: 'He said if I was going to play this thing, he was either going to have someone teach it to me properly, or he was going to smash me across the head with it. So I actually took the lessons for a year classical lessons...' He was given guitar lessons by Big Jim Sullivan" From Ritchie Blackmore's biography. What were you saying about self-taught?
@azimuth361
@azimuth361 14 жыл бұрын
@shavethebravedave True that. None of their other guitarists have penned any classics. All the iconic songs are Blackmore riffs. Heck, the only Purple songs that get any airplay or that anyone recognizes are from Blackmore days. If they do a 12 song set live, it'll be 9 Blackmore tunes, maybe a cover, then two Morse songs.

Joe, I think you're wrong. You did brought a lot to DP. In a way, you saved them, kept them floating until they finally found Steve. And you did it just by playing with them for several months. I think The Music would benefit the most if you'd stay with the guys, I truly do. Ritchie is toooo different, even though he WAS DP, common guys!! My 11 year-old son can't believe my favourite cars are the '37 Cord 812, '53 Studebaker Starliner, and '32 Deuce hot rod (along with the Hirohata Merc mentioned in a previous message.) He gave the thumbs down on my faves, because his idea of a great car is a Bugatti Veyron or McLaren F1. I can appreciate those as well, so I said, "Can't we just admit they're ALL cool?" Well, guitar playin' ain't much different. Blackmore is my favourite, but I must admit it ... they're all cool!

@XapnoMapkc I agree with you completely. The difference is skill versus talent. Monkeys have skill. Mozart had talent. Let's take Malmsteen. Brimming over with skill, but who really wants to listen to it for any length of time? Malmsteen is of most interest to guitarists. The layperson doesn't really appreciate the complexity of, say the intro to 'Icarus' Dream Suite Op 5'. But they can hum 'Smoke on the Water' chords you can play with your butt cheeks.
@XapnoMapkc
@XapnoMapkc 14 жыл бұрын
I'd be happy to have a tenth of the skill (or talent) that ANY of those guys possess. I should also admit that (like most people) who I like best might change from day to day depending on how I feel. One day, I might like an over the top player like Malmsteen and the next day I could very well prefer the "less is more" approach of Jimmie Vaughan.

Purple was an awesome but awfully repetitious band. They were so FAR ahead no question about it. I personally thing RBs best work was "Rainbow" with Dio on Vocals . Coverdales best work was Early "Whitesnake "and the2 title tracks on the Purp records . There are 3 bands from Birmingham England they all grew up together ,Zep Sab and Purple .Then you have Thin Lizzy , Humble Pie ,Mountain and Cream .All those bands used the GTR and Bass together so well in creating a huge sound .You notice the Bass a lot more on records from that era.

Alex and Eddie both took classical piano lessons. Their father, Jan Van Halen was an accomplished musician in his own right and the brothers learned from his tutelage. Again, Blackmore topped the charts in the 70's when hard rock was in vogue. Now, it's not. Miley Cyrus and Shakira top the charts. I stand by my original point. Blackmore was great in his day. The likes of Gilbert and Satch have passed him. Hard rock just doesn't sell like it did during Purple's heyday.

@shavethebravedave Is that the one where he threw the drink at the cameraman at the beginning? I'm just biased toward Steve Morse because I met him once. He also collaborated with Rik Emmett who is also on the short list of my favorite guitarists. I love Blackmore, don't get me wrong. Blackmore is brilliant and I don't want to take anything away from him. But he very much dominated Deep Purple. Morse is much more integrated, a peer, on the same plane.

@Adipsia1 9 жыл бұрын
They'd never have called Yngwie... they needed someone with talent who could learn the repertoire quickly and check his ego in with the cloak-room attendant. Joe Satriani and Steve Morse tick those boxes perfectly. They can play Richie's stuff easily without showing-off and trying to supplant him. Yngwie would never do that... he's too much up his own centre of gravity.
@Adipsia1
@Adipsia1 9 жыл бұрын
InfiniteFire1988 He'd have Ian Paice scalloping his drum-kit and everyone wearing Rolex watches and Ferrari stickers on their instruments. ;-) I love Yngwie too, but an ego like his leaves no oxygen for anyone else to breathe... it would be interesting to see Ritchie's reaction if it had happened though, I don't think he would have been a happy man. Then again, I don't think happiness is an emotional state in Ritchie's emotional vocabulary.

Hendrix had seen King crimson play a show., Someone in the audience over heard a conversation while seated next to hendrix's table, Future days gone past 13 years later the person who was seated next to jimi hendrix ,met Robert Fripp, He told Robert what Hendrix said'' he said? Damn I forgot! can't say?, sorry bout , cannot contribute unless, ,dreadway you understand right? Sure, nothin business, just personal. I made myself perfectly clear. hints of humor , no creativity , You know people are sold on mediocrity, the failure is lack of originality. Not word for word , But Hendrix said king crimson was the best band he'd ever seen. Seriously robert told his story during the 80s, a tale of good omen, and wisdom to teach wherever he goes , nothing compares The Worlds Greatest compliment (too Fripp ever) 'Hendrix' of course goes on .. and on.. fin.

Again, squared off how? To see who can create a more memorable riff or to see who can shred faster? Beginners can play the opening of "Smoke On The Water" or "Pictures Of Home" and many people can play the solos on "Lazy" and "Highway Star." But these songs are testament to the fact that nobody can match Ritchie when it comes to putting the perfect notes together. Newer isn't always better. A new Honda could outperform the Hirohata Merc in every way, but give me that Barris Kustom ANY day.
