The Clash front man Joe Strummer leaping to the defence of Toper Headon when the latter was allegedly suffering heroin withdrawal on tour. A journalist asks about Topper throwing up and typical of Joe this causes him to unleash on the hapless journalist.
I have pinned a pretty bold claim from Rogue Trader, claiming Joe was a fraud and the band was manufactured. Personally I can't subscribe to that view, as it is just a little too 'out there' for me. But that's just my own opinion and I'd love to hear what others think.
Keep i respectful though folks.
This is a re-post with higher volume and captions of a clip uploaded by Jukka Jalava. I do not own the clip, but I claim fair use for educational and historic purposes.

John Mellor was a complete fake phony playing a role for the cameras. Once there was no cameras around he reverted back to his posh rp accent and private school persona. It was all a big act to subvert the working class youth with left wing commie drivel. The whole band was fake, completely manufactured for the very start.

I've got to tell you, this is a very bold claim. I was a young teen, just getting into bands, and was down in London through all this period and never once heard this mentioned. I pinned your comment, so others can weight in. Keep it respectful though. Has anyone else heard something similar?

I find this to be a very simplistic view purely aimed at dismissing John Mellor/Joe Strummer and The Clash entirely. I agree they had many contradictions at play and I think that is part of what destroyed the band in the end. I actually have never heard any such claims that Joe would use a posh accent or "private school persona" when the cameras were off. But it's no secret he came from a more well-off background than he wanted people to know. I wouldn't consider being dumped off at boarding school from the age of 9 to be a great way of growing up, though.

Strummer didn't like violence and wasn't prone to throwing down physically. But he was never afraid to deliver a powerful tell-off.

There was an American tv show called "Hill Street Blues" about police officers in Los Angeles and one of the subplots was an older sergeant who took a liking to a junkie and tried with all his might to get him to stay straight. And after he thought the guy was finally sober for good, a couple officers brought him into the station, wasted on heroin and the sergeant said to no one in particular, "Junkies will always break your heart."

Joe was standing by his band mate but would have been really pissed off with him as Topper was a heavy heroin addict and Joe was very anti drugs, hence sacking him soon afterwards.

wot,, joe smoked weed, took lsd, probably, other drugs,, in his hey day,,its a fact,, on a youtube clip, in a snooker hall, he goes on about, taking pill,s to a journalist, who brought up the subject,, a think he slowed down on drugs later on,, as he mentioned in a clip,, when introducing his new band members, who replaced, mick jones, and topper,,,drugs in the music business, comes with the whole package,, especially, the 60,s,70,s,and 80,s, as we all no, maybe with exception of maybe 10 percent, who did,nt.

Watch a Clash documentary. He used plenty. Mostly weed and pills. He claimed to be against them when they formed The Clash II without Mick and Topper as a diss to them.

Joe explained that they fired Topper because his opiate use disorder was messing up his drumming. He wondered aloud how jazz greats pulled it off when on the drums because for rock and roll the band needed precision.

@@davenewcombe2305 I think he was mainly opposed to heroin use: check the lyrics to _Deny_ . But yeah, it's a little bit hypocritical, to simply draw the line at heroin and then use the rest.
