In this interview from 1985, director Joel Schumacher discusses his newest film, St. Elmo's Fire. He also talks about the 1981 film The Incredible Shrinking Woman, receiving directing advice from Hal Ashby, being a first time director and the 1975 film Sparkle.
Released in 1985, St. Elmo's Fire starred a group of actors who became known as the Brat Pack: Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy and Andrew McCarthy. Mare Winningham also starred in the film.
Co-written with Carl Kurlander, Schumacher included several of his own experiences as a young adult in the film. He talks about Rob Lowe's character Billy Hicks, comparisons between Emilio Estevez in this film and Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, Mare Winningham's performance, John Cutler's performance and the audition process for the film.
From 1974 to 2000, Canada’s Brian Linehan conducted thousands of in-depth interviews with the greatest actors and directors from over 60 years of film history. His programs City Lights and Linehan have not been seen since they first aired and are now available for the first time for licensing. Linehan, a stylishly gifted broadcaster, meticulously did all his own research and that, coupled with his knowledge and passion about film and filmmaking, puts him in a class all by himself.
With 20,000 hours of music footage spanning 90 years and thousands of hours of in-depth interviews with the 20th century’s icons of Film and Television, Politics, Comedy, Literature, Art, Science, Fashion and Sports, Reelin’ In The Years Productions is now the World’s Premier Source For Footage Of Musical Artists, Entertainers & History Makers.

Brian Linehan, who passed away in 2004, left his entire estate to The Brian Linehan Charitable Foundation to provide training, work opportunities and promotion for young actors of exceptional talent. All of the income of his Foundation is donated to not-for-profit institutions for that purpose. In the decade since his death, recipients of the Foundation’s support have included extraordinary young actors affiliated with the Canadian Film Centre, The National Screen Institute of Canada, the Stratford Shakespearean Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, which, since Brian's passing, has preserved and housed Brian's personal archive and tape library.

Maybe Brian is subconsciously implying that he's not happy with his looks or he's sensitive about his appearance. So he's standing g up for the "little guy".just a theory.

Very brazen and ahead of his time for the interviewer to bring up the institutional bias that Schumacher clearly didn't even realize he had written into the script.

This real life villain even bragged about having sex with over 20,000 people. As ugly as he is, it’s obvious most of it was not consensual. There’s only 365 days in a year so if it was 1 different person each day, it would take 54 years to get to that number. How is that even possible unless he was involved in human trafficking ring. I feel bad for all the victims.

Honestly, he just asked him a hard question about a problem he had. He did it fairly and gave Joel a fair chance to respond. I didn't have a problem with it. That's how you challenge someone respectfully.
