I was still on active duty in 1986. My dad was a retired sergeant major from the green berets. This is the only movie we ever went to see together. He didn't say a word during the film. At the end, he told me the fire fight scenes were spot on. Total fucking chaos, just like Stone says. He did two tours in Vietnam and one in Thailand. Thanks Joe for this interview.

We did learn from Vietnam we made lazer guided bombs and perfected them until we got a desert storm to use them in. Why didn't he prep for Elon musk or Snowden like he did for this one? I think Joe who says he doesn't read the comments is starting to read the comments. He is now unfortunately way too important for society and culture in general to be unprepared he now has a duty almost to translate and reportEven though that's the last thing he probably wants.

@@noahziegler3478 The Snowden interview was just as good and as well-planned s this. And who really gives a fuck about Elon Musk? He's just a guy rolling in someone else's money, with antiquated ideas. Musk is largely all talk, and no action. He uses the skills of others to gain notoriety and takes all of the credit. He's a good conversationalist. A good interviewer finds response with people they dont like and doesnt like them. Few people are good at that. Being biasless makes you too robotic, and being to full of bias can create walls. It's hard to find the middle ground. I'm not convinced Joe is great at interviews, but he's a fun guy to talk to and he seems decent at keeping people engaged. He's also a searcher, and curious, which helps him find conversation pretty well with most people.

I'm a Gen Xer, born just as the Vietnam War ended; my dad is a vet, and he NEVER talked about it. None of the vet dads in my neighborhood did. I do remember that there was definitely an unspoken divide between the dads who served and the few who didn't and chose "activism" instead. @E W not nearly the same thing. Hawaii is only a state due to the strategic advantage it gave to the US. Why was there an entire naval fleet there? Who would we use it on? Japan targeted military assets that were clearly a threat to them in the future. We dropped two atomic bombs on two different civilian populations and justify if by "we saved more lives in the long run". That's utter psychopathic none sense. I wouldn't be surprised, nor blame them if the entire world was currently plotting against us. Plot twist, we're the bad guys, and we're too collectively indocternated to even see it. These books are related to current SJW and political correctnes's issues but i dont think Sowell has any interest in talking about this.And who can blame him? The guy have debunked the pay gap in the fucking 70's and people are still talking about it like it's a new thing. I love Thomas Sowell to death. I've read almost every book he wrote, multiple times. He's not only a personal hero of mine but also the intelectual standart i aspired to achieve one day. I'm sure Oliver Stone feels pretty grateful to have such an in-depth interview with someone who's eager to know about him, the movies and can actually ask quality questions. I've seen a couple interviews of Oliver Stone that were so painfully superficial. This is a gem that is now in the ethos and part of our film archives, from a legend of film making. We need more of these. The Cohen brothers, Spielberg, Spike Lee, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Lucas, Tim Burton, Clint Eastwood, Ron Howard, Micheal Mann...etc. This should be an entire agenda to archive these great film makers. Joe's the right guy for the job.

@NevrSilent4 жыл бұрын
It sort of is, but is mostly fictional. Don't take any of the events depicted thereof as remotely historical--particularly the firefights. His real life company commander wrote a (fairly boring) book which sought to "de-mythify" the goings on for Stone's "Bravo Company" depicted in the film. The book is pretty dry. At times almost clinical. But he wasn't trying to dramatize things, which is what Stone was actively (and admitted himself) doing. The "final battle" was paid particular scrutiny, as the film depicts, basically, the entire battalion at that fire-base encampment is overrun by thousands of NVA, where finally the CO (played by Dale Dye) calls for a "snake and nape" drop on his own location. His CO explains--no, not hardly at all. Stone's squad's portion of the perimeter had, indeed been briefly penetrated--enough for author Hemphill to concede in lectures "those guys probably felt like they'd been completely overrun for a few minutes." But significant chunk of Alpha Company hauled ass to reposition and provide backup. The perimeter breach was subsequently contained and the line re-established within an hour or so. For some of those guys, it was probably a scary hour or so. But that ending isn't all that horrifying SOUNDING, or all that "Hollywood." So Stone made up his own battle's climax that WAS Hollywood.
@Andre-tu3km4 жыл бұрын
@@NevrSilent Regardless, it's clearly a deeply personal film, especially if viewed through the eyes of the Charlie Sheen character
@NevrSilent4 жыл бұрын
@@Andre-tu3km No doubt he was was taking many of his personal impressions of his experiences to what he would subsequently write for the film. A great many of those impressions must also be recognized as having been developed in hindsight. It took years for him to develop the sense of "what a spectacular waste of our time, our youth and our lives for war," that he wound up interpolating into his script. AT the time, Stone was described as being quite rah-rah Gung-ho (not quite to pathological levels like the character of Bunny portrays...but also not terribly far away from it either). TODAY, he describes his choice to take an extra three months of his enlistment as combat tour, because he was already disenchanted with service, and wanted to cut his service time down. Some guys from his unit believed otherwise-that he really kinda thrived being "in it." It appears his disenchantment really took form AFTER he got back. Some of that talk in this interview about not having any kind of a working communication w/ his father (and probably the rest of his family) in the wake of his tour probably lent quite a great deal with that growing discontent about his participation. A lot of guys just felt immensely out of place, and genuinely marginalized by life back here, to such an extent where their rear-view interpretation becomes more and more a case of regret and "What the f--k did I do all that over there for?!" Not just Vietnam, that's been the case for pretty much every war soldiers have come back for and been willing to document, especially when their sentiments tend to be that they can't talk about it, save maybe with each other (it took almost two generations for WWII vets--the so-called "Good War" -- to be willing to discuss notions of regret or feeling of being Outsiders--or worse--in their own society after coming back...but it's there too).

The low-volume talker is particularly difficult for me on a very personal preference level; however, Oliver Stone is one seriously phenomenal artist in my opinion. One of the greats of all time (DUUHH). I've watched a number of his movies more than ten times and own them too: 'Born on the Fourth of July', Plattoon (iconic classic), Scarface ('80s Masterpiece, De Palma), The Doors (incredible), 'U Turn', Natural Born Killers, JFK (another iconic not to miss film), ...I mean like forget about it, he's freakin' extraordinary! He even stated that he liked First Blood (another personal absolute fave..along with ...Fourth of July and U Turn). I have a ton of gratitude and admiration for this man. He was due to be on. Ricky said he'd be happy to do it over video but to be honest I'd rather him wait until he can come into the studio, it'd be far better.

More than one shooter with JFK? Of course, and I say exactly two words to those who disagree. Like Rogan said, "Magic Bullet". Period. End of debate.

I love Oliver.. Hes a rockstar but he has no idea what will hold up with God or if there is a God at all... People say things like that to make themselves feel better when they have no control over things they dont agree with....

I met Oliver Stone in 1993 on the set of Heaven and Earth. Very hard working man and someone who had a genuine laugh. I'm looking forward to watching this interview now. Two of my favorite celebrities, Rogan and Stone.

I wouldn't know where to begin if I had the chance to interview Oliver Stone. He wrote Scarface, Natural Born Killers and JFK, the Doors and Snowden. All great movies that really had serious impact on my life. I'd need 12 hours to cover it all.
