@@DL-ij7tf it’s fair, depends on where you live though. I can buy one including the multi mount for 80$ including shipping and tax and I live in the Netherlands. For me a similar sized tops would cost over 100$ Price is dependent on region too.

Awesome video/test! I have always liked the value you get with Mora knives. Yes the Garberg is a little more expensive, but you get a LOT of durability for a few extra bucks. This proves Mora right when they decided to delay the Carbon Gsrberg. Their initial plan was to release the Carbon one first but they were not satisfied with the heat treatment. So they released the Stainless one first and took their time to get the C100 heat treatment right. Obviously, that was a damn good decision. After the brittle Pathfinder, this shows they can do C100 pretty well.

@@aleksandersever3039 It's been a while, but I saw an interview about that topic. I'd have to look into it again. I think it was an interview with the chief of production from Mora. But it could also have been an interview with Dave Canterbury. According to that interview, the plan was to release the carbon Garberg first and the 14C28N stainless one later. I found it also interesting as they use the same carbon steel as in their other blades while they didn't seem to have that much experience with 14C28N (most stainless Moras use 12C27). I can only assume they wanted different properties from the Garberg blade compared to their other knifes.

@@HrWisch Morakniv produces the same "Carbpn" steel for decades now. What you say about Morakniv, needed more time, to find out the proper heat treatment on the Carbon version of the Garberg, not only isn't true, but has no logic at all. They don't make a different heat treatment on any of their Carbon steel knives, all are heat treated, in the same oven, with exactly the same way. Same goes for all their steels. My only guess, is that what you said, is a rumor, that was written on KZfaq,. KZfaq, is the worst place to get any kind of information about knives, because 95% of the KZfaqrs, are backyard warriors, who saw the opportunity to make easy money, by calling themselves' knife, or bushcraft, or Survival or all these together with the word "experts next to them. They usually speak nonsense, that one copies and next day makes a video, where he says the same nonsense and that's , how a lot of misinformation, is spread around people, like a disease. Unfortunately, that's not my personal opinion, but facts. Morakniv, delayed the Carbon version, to make more money. It's simple marketing tricks that the common man, can not recognize. Where I know all that? Well, I a have a degree in Metallurgy since the 90's and I used to work in a knife company for many years. Generally, I know knives, way more than the common "collector", whose only knowledge they have on knives, are the misinformation, they get, just from KZfaq videos..

@HrWisch Жыл бұрын
@@greekveteran2715 The info wasn't from any YT channel / video. It was either from Dave Canterbury (who promoted the Garberg at the time) or from a Mora employee shortly after the Garberg Carbon released. The statement was that the plan was to release the carbon version first but they wanted different properties from their C100 than usual and were not satisfied with the results. So they released the stainless version first. I obviously don't know if that info is correct. But I'm sure it was either from DC or Mora themselves.

Awesome video as always Joe! I just watched your reviews of the Garberg both in Carbon steel and in Stainless. It seems to me that they are very similar in performance. The Carbon steel seems a tiny bit softer with a little smaller chippings and a tad more bendy before snapping. The Stainless is only 60% of the price of the Carbon in Denmark though, so you convinced me to go with that instead!
@joex

@joex
@joex Жыл бұрын

@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 Жыл бұрын
That's 100% wrong. Both the stainless steels of Morakniv (12c27 and 14c28N) because of their amounts of Chrome and less Carbon than their Carbon steel, are both much softer. Also, Morakniv heat treats their Stainless at 56-58hrc ,when they heat treat their Carbon steel, at 58-60hrc. When it comes to blades and their rockwell hardness system, a 2 to 4 difference (56-58htc or 56-60hrc which is the range of Morakniv's steel's difference) might sound like a small difference, but it actually is not. 56hrc means the steel is soft, it won't hold an edge for long but it will have more toughness than harder steels. The edge of that blade will not chip, but it will roll easier, compared to how much Morakniv's Carbon steel will hold before it's edge chips. .Then 58 to 59 hrc, is usually the perfect hardness for a user friendly knife. That hardness means, that the blade will be both tough and strong, and generally, that's where a user is satisfied with the overall performance of a knife. Carbon steel they use, is 20C Shock Absorber(Sandvik) or UHB20C(Bohler-Uddeholm), it's the same steel with different name. If you find it called C100, is again the same steel. It's a similar steel to the more known 1095, however it's a cleaner steel, with very slightly better recipe which is obvious good news! That being said, even though their Stainless steels, on paper, are both tougher steels, in reality though, Carbon steels show better performance on every single aspect, except the carbides. Those carbides and that toughness, is what tricked you, believing that the stainless will have better edge stability. but as I said, in real use, the Carbon steel provides a more proper blade, for these kind of knives. they are preferable for both Scandi grinds, and for the indented use of these knives. The only real reason, to choose the stainless over the Carbon, is if you're really going to use this knife much, and what's the environment , that this knife is going to be used. (for example, by the ocean fishing? (get the Stainless steel), or in the woods trying your skills, using it as it was designed for? (Carbon steel is the way to go!))

Could you try a rust test on this steel? Maybe not a video, just leave it in a cup of your pond water for a day and post a picture? And please baton some of these factory edges through a non-hardened nail! A bit of advice - use something soft to baton with, like wooden club or suitable plastic mallet. You could test it out on some of your broken knives first, like your SR1 (S35vn), Voyager (AUS10a), etc.

So the difference is that stainless does quite a bit better on the tip, is highly corrosion resistant, and tends to be ~15% cheaper. Not sure about considering them equal, as respectable as the carbon is too overall. C'mon, give it to the carbon fanboys straight! Not that it is fair representation of the broader cheap stainless vs cheap carbon comparison given that the stainless in question for this is 14c28n and not 4116 or whatever unnamed "stainless" junk. What I really take away from this is how superior swedish steel and morakniv are in general. Despite being near enough to the same chemically, no 1095 would have come close to this at equal geometry.

The stainless is surprisingly impressive. I have both the carbon and the stainless. In reality though, you would need to test more than one of each knife (at least 3 of each, made at different times in the factory) under the same conditions to reach a conclusion on which is better. I actually prefer the Basic 511 or the Robust for most tasks and the Robust did amazing in his tests.

0:17 the wasp did a destruction test on your neck . While you were doing one on the car. It is a bit funny. A good way to ease that problem is to cut an onion in two halves. The flat part of the onion you put onto the skin where the wasp stung, in a few minutes it's all 'neutralized'. You're good.

Now if they could actually put a working wood edge on them they would be way better. My carbon steel version came with a very screwed up edge . I love Mora knives but that micro bevel they put on the Garberg is horrible. They do the bushcraft black just fine but not the Garberg.
