so your only parameter for knives is toughness? Then get something made from z-tuff. That steel excels at it (but is shit in other aspects) personally I care about much more things when it comes to knives but I also dont hit stones with them

@@martinerhard8447 Yeah, but then you have the Mora 749 , soft steel. Cold Steel machete's , Condor machete's. Tops Silent Hero. I can go on. It's not only length. Still, the Mora bushcraft black ( shorter version) is plenty of tough. Cedric (& Ada outdoors) and others have video's where it is batoned pretty hard. And it helds up fine. I have struck one, just for scientific purpose only ofcourse, a few times hard against an anvil. Both sides, edge also. No problem there. Took a bit of sharpening to get the edge back, but not much loss of bladewidth at all. maybe 2 tenth of a millimeter (metric system).

I`d be interested to see how the Bahco 2449 "Wrecking Knife" does in your tests. this is just another low budget carbon steel knife at least realtively similar to mora or hultafors from a notable manufacturer which also expressly allows according the description on the blister packaging that you can use a hammer to pound on the blade spine to "wreck" things. - certainly not something you see expressly stated in the instructions of other knives...

@ Dmytro Zabavskyi I would not let the failure of the knife keep you from buying it if you like it! Mora makes some really great knives, and the test that JOE X does are not really real world scenarios for 99% of knife usage. Very few knives, even really expensive knives will survive the extreme testing that is completed in these videos. Yes, the videos are fun to watch, but they would not stop me from buying a knife. Knives are made for cutting, carving, not stabbing car doors, or being pounded into a block of wood and tip tested.

Coat the tang with JB Weld, let it cure for a couple of days. Then test it. It's a real budget knife. Not worthy of testing unless you modify it. But I would enjoy watching you test this. I believe that the blade being longer and heavier (which increases the striking force on the brick and steel pole) introduces shock and vibration that is not existent in the shorter blade tests. This will more quickly expose any weakness in the steel type, heat treatment or design of the blade.
@Ve-suvius
@Ve-suvius Жыл бұрын
@@JohnB-dr8sk I like the Mora Bushcraft Black better anyway. What is the longer awkward blade of 7 inch good for? For chopping, it does nothing. It's too short still. I think this is the disavantage of high carbon steel when the heat treatment is only aim for edge retention and not good at improving toughness. That's why Mora's carbon steel (1% C) seems to be more brittle than their stainless steel (12C27 and 14C28N). While 0,8% carbon steels like SK5 (Hultafors) will be much more tough than Mora's XC100 (but for cutting tasks using Mora carbon will be more liked).

@@JohnB-dr8sk I agree on the Pathfinder breaking to early. Tang too brittle. Can't be else. But the stainless Mora companion (4 inch blade ) broke on the pole as well. Not immediately. And the Mora 749 held up quite a while against the pole. I had that one. Great stabber, but the edge was really soft. Would bend easy. No wonder it didn't break that soon. Some of the shorter Mora's could also be bend sideways extremely without breaking. Not all Mora's are the same I would conclude.

The Mora Pathfinder is a good lightweight knife but the blade is too thin for extreme uses. Even though it is a good choice for opening, beer cans quickly. I have a Carpenter Craft model and Mora a utility all round model. Both cost much less to buy than a pathfinder. The blade on the Pathfinder broke at the weakest point of the blade. This is a flaw of the design. The price point of the knife is too expensive for the purpose use of the knife. The Mora craft carpenter model has a 148-mm carbon steel blade and a 2.5-mm blade thickness and priced at $25 dollars. The Pathfinder has a 171 mm carbon steel blade and 3.2-mm blade thickness and costs $88 dollars. You pay $63 dollars more for a blade coating, 23-mm longer blade, 0.7-mm thicker blade and the nylon sheath. That is a significant reason to not buying a Mora Pathfinder. The same reason Mora discontinued the carpenter model; you can still find the 731 model at higher price. I agree with you, it is a Mora 💩 model for the price. 😅🤣😂

@@gizmocarr3093 The handles of the 700 series are/were the best. It's a pity they don't produce them anymore. And they were budget prices also. The 711 was 10 euro. Years ago in a German magazine they did a 'competition', the 711 was in it, a Bark River and some other knives. The Mora 711 won. I wasn't surprised. It's not for stabbing rocks, but for slicing wood and other stuff. Excellent. Excellent grip . Light weight.

It makes no sense to me to have a knife with a blade that long an have a stick tang. What many don't know stick tangs are not all bad. Puuko get away with it because they have through tang. it's also good when the tang tapers but goes all the way through the handle. I don't like the thin tang just stops in the middle of a plastic handle. I've never much liked mora the edge is very weak. I prefer a V grind or a convex. But I'm rather hard on stuff
@joex
@joex Жыл бұрын
hey, thanks for the ino! this knife is kind of weird!
@mdubb4855
@mdubb4855 Жыл бұрын
It's not exactly a stick tang. On factor tour videos and one KZfaq Cedric Ada video, the tang is not as wide as the blade but about 1/2" to 3/4" side, but then it has U-shaped notches carved out to give the molded on plastic handle something to grip so the blade won't pull out. The net effect when you take into account the alternating U-notches is very little functioning tang. The recend test here of the Cold Steel lightweight tanto showed not every handle has to result in a weak tang. Also Hultafors seem less prone to breaking right at the handle. But they are a lot thicker blades and less suitable for paring knife uses.
@Ve-suvius
@Ve-suvius Жыл бұрын
If stick tangs are not good on a knife like that. Why do have Indonesians have the huge parang knife with stick tang. Nepalese the big kukri knife with stick tang. Romans had the Gladius with stick tang. All this BS talk on full width tangs. Any of you are Gladiators?

@@Ve-suvius not capable of reading my whole comment. There is a difference between a stick tang and a through tang an a partial tang. You go ahead buy mora I don’t like them.
