Joey Giardello - Was an American boxer who was the world middleweight champion from 1963 to 1965. It was only in 1960 that Tilelli, now known as Giardello, received any kind of championship opportunity. On April 20, he faced Gene Fullmer for the National Boxing Association version of the world middleweight title. He missed out on the title when he and Fullmer fought to a draw over 15 rounds. Giardello lost four of his next six fights, but then came back strong with an 8-1-1 record in his next 10, all of which were over some of the biggest names in the division at that time. One of his wins, a 10-round decision over Henry Hank on January 30, 1962, was chosen as Ring Magazine's fight of the year. Then, on June 24, 1963, Giardello upset boxing legend Sugar Ray Robinson, and at the age of 33, was finally named as the No. 1 challenger for the world middleweight title. He wasted no opportunity. On December 7, Giardello faced Dick Tiger in Atlantic City for the title and won, taking the world championship by decision in 15 rounds and drawing with Tiger in two others.

A son of Giardello wants me to thank you for this wonderful montage of his dad. He's sitting here with me, and this came up in my recommendations. He's very proud of both of his parents. There is going to be a Giardello movie... It's being worked on as I speak.

@@jayf4357 Unfortunately the son I was talking about, Steve Tilelli, passed away July 4th 2022. He started the project, wrote the script and was a producer and due to some family issues I have no idea how the film will continue. It was at the point of casting actors and picking locations, but who knows now without Steve pushing it. Interesting story. Read Charles Redner s book Down But Never Out, renamed I think This Was A Man. Book gives you basic outline of movie. I will miss my friend of 20 years, Steve, terribly.

Probably the most underrated World Middleweight Champion of them all, and very unfairly. Joey was a beautiful boxer with great footwork and perfect timing.

Giardello was a very underrated middleweight chamop who enjoyed a golden Indian Summer to his career, defeating the great Dick Tiger for the title. A year later he beat Ruben 'Hurricane' Carter who was knocking them all over until then. And Giardello could punch as well as box beautifully.

Class act, shame there is no footage (If the fight was filmed that is) of his fight with George Benton, battle of the Philly masters. Great boxer Giardello, my father always said to me he was class, precision footwork and able to get leverage on his punches at the same time, a great boxer to not just watch but study. Hopefully a movie of him would be made one day, he was portrayed very poorly by the film makers in the Hurricane movie. 🥊

A great fighter who was not in good graced of the 'mob' and consequently was among the top middleweights for several years. I think Dick Tiger gave him a shot at the title possibly after the mob had less influence. I do remember a fighter who he had a lot of trouble with and lost to him at least twice, the underrated Joey Giambra. Two very tough 'paisans'.

great boxer but even better human being having a handicapped child he raised a lot of money for charity also served as a 15 year old paratrooper At the end of ww2 Did he ever take a fall for the mob not sure on that but most boxers had to do something for them even lamotta did with the fox fight RIP JOEY GIARDELLO

Also...he was integral in the building of the Special Olympics having a Downs Syndrome son. There's a great book about his personal life - Down But Never Out by Charles Redner (renamed This is a Man I think). A movie is still in the works telling his extraordinary story. Making a movie takes a long time but it won't be too much longer. Another thing ..Universal movies had to put a disclaimer on the DVD The Hurricane for the atrocious Lie in the way the fight with Joey was depicted in the film.
