I testified for Joey Giardello in Sept 2000 as a boxing choreographer and former paid sparring partner of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and Dick Tiger. He was suing a movie company. When we talked about his many fights when Fullmer's name came up he was still angry about being butted and fouled. I knew Gene and he was the nicest guy outside that ring, in the ring, watch out he came to destroy.

Fullmer Had More Energy than the eveready battery man and tough as nails. What a Machine.

The Giardello Story needs to be made into a movie!!!

The ref should have disqualified Fullmer for head butting. Boxers are taught to lead with their left, not their head.

Fullmer not only used his head as a third fist, but rabbit punched on an almost constant basis.

Giardello was tough and could take a lot of punishment. Fullmer definitely had his hands full.

I really liked Gene Fullmer , but I don't think he wanted any part of Giardello in this fight. A shame they ended up hating one another.

Some fighters must have broken their hands hitting Fullmer's high elbow.

Fullmer was a dirty fighter. He would fit in nicely in extreme trash fighting that is popular today.

Fullmer was a great battler, but also incredibly dirty when he had to be. I blame the referee!

After the fight, I think Fulmer and Giardello hated each other. Fulmer did appear to fight dirty here, but Sugar Ray of all the fighters that he fought, seemed to really like Gene Fullmer.

Judges of that era had a love affair with Fullmer. He received a gift draw in his 3rd fight with Sugar Ray Robinson, and 2 questionable draws against Giardello and Dick Tiger.

No when he beat Robinson it wasnt from the head butts. Robinson wouldnt get that close to him. Both of these guys beat Robinson. Granted he was well out of his prime though. In his prime neither woulda came close to beating him.

@maxx1bonesaw Have to agree with lump---this fight was a disgrace--as was Fullmer's entire, protected careeer. Only Ali had more ludicrous outcomes in his favor.

Lot of elbow strikes & head butts from Gene. Looks like dirty boxing to me. Gene may be good but I cannot respect him.

Well actually they did work against (an admitedly oa bit over the hill ) sugar Ray. Sugar Ray stopped his ass once with a perfectly timed left hook but the other two times he couldn't stay away from Gene...Everyone on this page is right Gene was a dirty bastard...he'd butt you, hit you low, if he got a guy down he'd hit him while he was on his knees...Gene didn't give a fuck about nuthin' except winning. Few things other than the legendary Sugar Ray left hook were ever able to stop him though
