No way dude! Based off what? He’s a classic example of a Hall of Very Good player. 1 MVP, with only 6 all star appearances, 1 gold glove, 0 silver sluggers, never once leading the league in any statistic, & 2144 hits in 17 years is not a Hall of Fame career👍

Sadly, there are many who feel this way in this era.... People today would shame skilled contact hitters with great plate discipline like Carew, Gywnn, Oliva, etc. Remember....Chicks dig the long ball, so that's all that matters.

As of the moment of this comment Votto has 350 HR's and just over 2100 hits and is under .300 for his career at first base. As of now, he is not even close to being in the HOF. At the age of 39, I dont see him getting the numbers to go in, and Im not hating. Im a Cinci guy and LOVE Votto. He and Barry Larkin are my favorite players of all time, but we have to be honest here. The issue with Votto is while he had several seasons of 154 to 162 games played. He has had several seasons where he only around 60 games. I just looked it up and Votto has missed nearly 360 games over his career to injury. That is alot of hits, HR;s, and RBI's he missed out on.

They just put Rolen in, who has less hits than Votto, less HRs than Votto, a lower batting average than Votto. a lower on base percentage than Votto, and a lower slugging percentage than Votto. So if Rolen got in with worse numbers, why would you think Votto won't go in as well? Seriously, I am curious to see how you twist this around to justify one without the other.

@@jayseaborg3895 I was shocked Rolen went in as well, but the answer is easy, discussed publicly, and I doubt it will satisfy you. That said, its simple Rolen played 3B and Votto plays 1B. I too was shocked when Rolen went in and then it was said he was a top ten all time 3B. How does a guy top ten of all time at his position not get in? Especially when guys with worse numbers at his position are already in. Now you find me a 1B with under 400 Hrs and 2500 hits that is in the HOF. Do your research and discover one, maybe there is one Im not aware of, but I bet you wont find one. The closest comparison to Votto you will find will be Mattingly. Mattingly got 28% and that is as high as he got and he won 7 Gold Gloves and was a Yankee. Again, Im a massive Votto fan, Im not hating on the guy, but the hard truth is he doesnt have the numbers.

But to answer your question about 400 Hrs and under 2500 hits (you might explain how you came to pick those numbers), and ignoring the first basemen who primarily played before 1920. there is Cepeda 379HRs and 2351 hits, Greenberg 331 HRs and 1628 hits, Hodges 370 HRs and 1921 hits, Mize 359 HRs and 2011 hits, , and Bill Terry 154 HRs and 2193 hits. That research took two minutes. There is a precedence, Votto already has better numbers than players who are in there that played in the modern era, analytics will help his case and he hasn't pissed off writers. He gets in.

However, you open your comment with asking, "are we electing people based on position". Yes and you seem to be a intelligent enough person to know that. Its not a secret, its not a conspiracy theory, its openly discussed. Good all time great catchers like Carlton Fisk, Gary Carter, and Yogi Berra dont have near the numbers as first basemen and outfielders. Ozzie Smith, Joe Morgan, or Ryan Sandberg, YESSSSSS part of the criteria is position played and you damn well know that. Among your cites was Gil Hodges, great name drop there. Go read his Wiki page, specifically the paragraph on his HOF background. It discusses what we here are discussing. I cited you a perfect comparison in Mattingly and he didnt even come close. You arguing so hard for Votto, maybe you're a Reds fan. Look at Tony Perez's career numbers. HR;s he and Votto are close, but Perez had 2700 hits and 1600 RBI's and was multiple time word champion. However, Perez barely got the 75% needed and truth be told it was his reputation as being a clutch hitter in playoffs and World Series that got him in. Another guy in a similar camp as Votto is Fred McGriff whom went in this year. Under 2500 hits, but he had 493 HR's, 7 under the magic 500 and almost 1700 RBI's. Look up Joe Carter, not in. Im 46, and for years it was 3000 hits or 500 HR's for first basemen and outfields with exceptions for guys like Ricky Henderson and Rock Rains. I dont know maybe as WAR and some of these other new era stats take trend that will change. However, based on the traditional HOF benchmarks of who is in and who is not, Votto is not at this time. Joey has a few more productive years or modern stats become the trend then maybe.

He may be better but he is not "certainly" better. Rolen WAR 70. Votto WAR 65. They are very comparable.

They aren't likely to tie either of them though. They are definitely a worse roster than either of those team, not to mention the Jays who currently have the spot. And their remaining schedule is tough, with series against Astros, 2 against Rangers at least, 2 against Rays, Orioles, Jays right now, etc. They aren't a playoff team. I like that they are trying though, but it doesn't seem likely to work.
