@@JoeyCarlino Do you have any idea why the curve info node in Cycles has no effect on this one? Oh wait... I assume it's because we have a mesh at the end not curves. But then do you think the curve info could be preserved somehow as an attribute so we could colorize the strands gradually through their lenghts for example? (it might be simple but I have no idea how would I do this) If it's not possible than the shading parameters are still a big plus on the classic particles. But really nothing else. I tested this and it really is just perfect.

If you are animating with this set up, note that the Armature modifier needs to be placed above the Geometry Node modifier in the modifier stack. It took me a while to figure that out. If it is lower on the stack, the base mesh will animate but the hairs will stay where they are. Thanks for the great tutorial Joey (as always).

How did you animate them? I’m trying to add movement for a project
@BenP-hr2rc
@BenP-hr2rc Жыл бұрын
@@HappyMcPe I just used the normal workflow for animation: armature>parent mesh to armature with automatic weights>adjust weights if needed>animate armature with keyframes. As noted above, when you do this blender will add an armature modifier in the modifier stack. Modifiers are computed in order from top to bottom, so you need the armature modifier above the geometry node modifier so that blender calculated the animation deformation first, and then applies the fuzz second. If you are new to animating there are a ton of great tutorials on how to animate with an armature and on how to assign weights. @JoeyCarlino did a tutorial recently on this that is very good (no surprise there). I think it was called "Rigging for Impatient People."

For anyone following that reach a hurdle at 11:47, make sure the name of that UV Map attribute you're providing is the same exact name of the UV Map attribute that's attached to your mesh. I followed blindly and typed "UVmap" as the attribute name in Node Wrangler, which led to me being confused for a good 30 mins. My UV Map attribute name was actually "UVMap" not "UVmap". GaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhlee... I hope I can help anyone else out there.

Nice, efficient workflow, and good explanation of the two ways to orient the hair instances. You mentioned drawing the hair curves by hand, to save time over making them in Geometry Nodes. That's the only thing I would have done differently, because taking the extra time to parametrically create four varying splines inside the GN would eliminate reliance on an external collection. The GN could then go into an Asset Library and would work standalone. To be fair, though, I'm a programmer at heart and lean toward parametric modeling, and my viewpoint is probably atypical. :) One great thing about Blender GN is that the two approaches aren't mutually exclusive. Keep your Collection input port on the GN, add internally generated curves, and give the user control over the relative density of each curve. All that said, the way you've done this is fast, simple, and works extremely well. Sometimes it's worth tweaking the nodes to parameterize everything, sometimes not, and it's artists' choice. :) I"m intrigued by the challenge of the hair positioning on skinned meshes during animation. I haven't tried it, but I wonder if that could be corrected in the shader using displacement. It might be faster, but I'll bet it would also be more complicated and probably not worth the effort unless you were making a scene with a lot of these objects. Any thoughts on that conceptual approach? I'll admit it was just a random idea, and I haven't thought it through carefully yet. Interesting video, well-crafted tutorial. Thanks for sharing!

When I tried putting all four scales into the group input it didn't work.
