Dan Worall once looked at each frequency range by using the solo feature in fabfilter on his master bus and pointed out how each range had a “highlighted” instrument that was clearly dominant. That made it really clear for me and I use that as a quick check now. It’s not my main mode of mixing, but it helps a noob like me identify masking more easily.

So good! I'm glad you also addressed arrangements and parts as being important to a mix. I very often play the same parts in 2 octaves both on guitar and vocally. I remember reading how a producer once asked Christie Mcvie to play her part up an octave so it wouldn't clash with the guitar. Before he finished asking, she started playing the part up an octave. Very overlooked but equally important part of recording and mixing. Cheers and thank you!

I'm liking that idea of adding on octave to create more of a pocket for a sound in your mix. It's been one of my go-to's these days in post to throw a little alterboy with a few percent of an octave or above or below the source, to give it some additional depth and "findability"
@joeymusic

I try to keep my arrangements in a way to leave each element with its own space to avoid relying on EQ and side-chain compression, but sometimes the track needs extra oomph and I have no choice which is also the case when mixing a track someone else arranged. Depending on the track, if arrangement isn't the solution, I tend to rock a combination of complimentary EQ and side-chain compression to get the clarity I desire. Thank you Miami and all the folks at JST, you have helped me bring my mixing skills to the next level and you continue to do so! Keep doing what you do, much love.

What I love doing is using mid/side EQ to unmask certain clashing frequencies in the lead vocal and its double tracks. 🤫 take off some of the lower range with mid-EQ, cutting only the “mono” signal from the double tracks , creating space for the lead vocal (mono) to sit nicely in context with its double tracks . Let me know what you think

Curious Miami. For sidechaining things like kick/bass etc. Do you prefer sidechaining with multiband compression or dynamic eq and why?
@joeymusic

Depends on the track, Brady! A big boomy kick isn’t gonna be the same as a quick snappy one. I think I go over this is a bit in dynamic eq vs multiband compression -Miami

I understand that you were simply making a point, but don't be throwing around a bunch of phrases you aren't certain of . Pretty sure there isn't a real law of physics that says two objects can't occupy the same space. In neutron stars, matter is crushed together so powerfully under an entire star (and more) of gravity that electrons are stripped off and proton and neutrons are squashed together into neutrinos. What is your definition of "object". Because two liquid chemicals could be mixed together and go "on top of eachother' to form a reacted 3td amalgamation If E=M then more energy in one location or carried by a particle .

Every 1 minute asking for subscription and and making word plays about it, I just hit unsubscribe. It is highly unprofessional to focus solely at the commercial success and neglect the quality of the video. Provide the information that you promised through the title, remind to subscibe once in some point, and don't make this personal because this is not a reality show about you. It is about sharing each one's knowledge about audio editing, that's what your title supports on the first place.
