I love your passion for languages! Very sweet that you’re learning Dutch and even moved to be near to your boyfriend. I’ve been learning Spanish since my later years of high school, because it’s my family’s native tongue, and it is still a challenge lol. But I’ve reached the point of reading chapter books which has introduced me to a lot of words and phrases I otherwise wouldn’t have come across. Language learning is truly a process where the learning never really ends, especially if it’s not your native language and you didn’t go through the school system to learn it, in my opinion. It’s interesting and fulfilling~

I loooooove this video because it is SO relatable. ❤ In the beginning, I did not even accept the fact that the word order is "messed up" but nowadays it makes total sense and I even feel weird when I make mistakes because I spot them the minute they go out of my mouth. At some point, the word order just makes sense and feels natural. Veel succes, Jo! Ik ben heel trots op je vooruitgang! 🎉

Been following you for so long and I'm so incredibly proud that you're now learning my native language :) En je hebt ook nog eens het betere Nederlands gekozen (en dat komt van een Nederlander haha). Ik raad je dik aan om ook naar Vlaamse muziek te luisteren en vooral het nieuws: Vlaams is zo veel helderder dan NL-Nederlands. I'm learning Vietnamese atm and it's my first tonal language... so I feel your pain reg. word order - my kryptonite atm are those bloody tones! None of the other 5 languages that I speak have them. Anyway, zet hem op!

Wauw zo knap!! You give me such great insight into learning a language. That makes me think right now that maybe if you already know a really hard language and a few others, it gets easier to learn a next one? Ik weet het niet zeker. Ik ben Nederlands maar spreek veel Engels en ik ben Portugees, en Haitian Creole en Arabisch aan het leren. Things you say about how the brain takes these new languages in, and the stages you go through sound familiar. It is all very interesting! Love your content❤

Girl, I'm also learning an SOV language at the moment - Japanese, about a year in - and I FEEL you. My biggest hurdle, I think, is patience. When I hit a wall (or even just feel like I've hit a wall comparatively and lose sight of how far I've come), I get antsy and want to give up on a program that's worked quite well for me, or start a new language entirely - because there are many I want to learn - or both tbh. The struggle is real. Gotta just keep swimming.

Groeten, Henk.

I was under the naive impression the second time I learned a new language would be easier but since the two languages I’ve explored outside of my native tongue are unrelated it probably explains why it’s not helping 😅 I also picked a dialect very early on so glad to see you’d advise that too.

I'm a native Dutch speaker from Suriname, so your accent sounds super European to me 😂 I'm a pretty fluent English speaker and am currently learning Korean, Thai, and Chinese in bouts and spurts and not all at the same time. As a native Dutch speaker, these Asian languages lack a lot of (I call them such) extraneous bits. Also, as a native Dutch speaker, I often find Dutch massively confusing. All those different verb conjugations are a headache. Things like articles and word gender are a complete non-issue with these Asian languages, and, as such, they seem like much more simplified or, rather, pure languages to me. Thai and Chinese have the difficulty of script, but if you're only learning to speak, they feel like easy languages to pick up, to me at least. Korean has an easy script, but learning vocabulary and grammar requires intense effort, and you need a basic level before you feel like you're actually learning and absorbing and capable of using the language. But these languages are a fun challenge, and I enjoy learning them a lot. Ik wens je veel succes in je Nederlands/Vlaams lessen!

I‘m swiss speaking German and learning Italian while preparing for my C2 exam in english. What I find the most frustrating right now in italian are all of those different word endings that I‘l just have to memorize. In english, the most frustrating part is, that I know I can sprak and write and understand the language very well while really struggling with the grammatical rules. Most of the time I can just go by what sounds good, but If I‘m not sure once, I can‘t come back to some rule that I can follow and find the correct form. But I‘ll get there.

About the W, the Dutch/Flemish you have to touch your top teeth on your lower lip some to get that buzzing bee sound out, maybe spread your lips slightly, as if forcing a smile, feeling a bit of pinch in your cheeks as you do. as opposed to rounded lips and U (guess it's called double U for a reason) sound of English. Hope that makes sense!

Jo! I love that you reached out to Preply and got sponsored in the last few months. You do such a lovely job of creating a language learning video while sharing some of your new language skills, but still making the video useful to those who don't speak that language. 🙂I absolutely love all the cultural insight that I've learned from my Arabic teachers in Egypt! My question for you, Jo: You touched on not sleeping well because you're excited, but when you're learning a new language do you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it? Is your brain trying to process it in your sleep and it's like you can't shut that part of your brain off and it disturbs your sleep? I had this with Arabic for the first several months, now I've found it's happening again that I'm studying Greek. And it's annoying!!! 😆

I like your language learning videos a lot. In my Mandarin language learning it was the same for the first 2 years. read the lessons, sweat, practice, cry, do it again. Now it's been almost 9 years and I've tried many different tutors but what works the most is a friend who's English is limited and she talks a lot. Listening to her rambling I pick up words in context and learn work arounds if I can't convey what I'm trying to say As well as accept ill never be perfect. Those that strive for perfection I find take themselves too seriously at times and miss the point of being with friends

About the world order... I think it's more natural to learn it just by hearing it over and over. I mean.. if you have to think every time you speak 'subject verb object adjective' or whatever.. I don't think you can every learn to think that quickly while you're speaking. That's why I really believe in comprehensible input. At some point the word order feels just as natural in the other language as the word order in your own language, because that's actually how I as a dutch person learned english.

Wat leuk, Jo!! Het gaat je lukken! Ik leer nu Darija, het dialect van Marokko. En ik leer mijn vier-jarig dochtertje het Tamazight. Mijn "roots" liggen in Marokko, maar ik praat helaas niet vaak Darija of Tamazight. Dus we gaan het gewoon leren! Je geeft me heel veel inspiratie! Succes met alles!!!!! ❤ liefs uit Nederland

@jofranco What brand is the handheld mic you're using in this video? It sounds great! I was gonna go with the Rode mic, but wanted to check this one out first.

Is zes maanden vroeger goed Nederlands? Ik zou zeggen zes maanden eerder. Maar die Belgen doen toch dingen altijd een beetje anders, dus wie weet.

I am learning Khmer. I am doing my first preply lesson today. I really want to stick with this language since my husband is Cambodian, but I have dabbled in Japanese and French in the past. Pronunciation for me is going to be difficult. I have a hard time getting my mouth to say the word the right way. If that makes any sense.
