The conductor, Ms. Grete Pedersen, is something else. She should be an international star of conducting. The sheer joy of making music shines through her. Cannot say how she might be at rehearsals but at least in performances she reminds me of the great Carlos Kleiber. The performance is almost perfect, although it seems to me that the tempo in No. III fugue is a little bit on the too fast side. However this does not detract at all from this beautiful rendition of Brahm's op. 45.

I am extensively experienced in this work, both as listener and as participant (chiefly in the chorus). It has always been a favorite of mine, and I have enjoyed it in many ways, live, recorded...and in this medium, where this performance joins many others I've been able to access, mainly from various German broadcasting companies. This version I only now (January 2023) discovered quite by chance...and likewise discovered that it was performed in November 2019, only two months after the permanent departure of my wife. Much has been made of Brahms' agnosticism, and I likewise describe myself as a "would-be believer," and I'm glad to say that not only the piece, but also this VERY sterling performance of it, might ultimately convince me otherwise! I have to marvel at the depth of this composer's spirit that he could create such a masterpiece...and I similarly congratulate these Norwegian musicians, all of them, that they've achieved this superior interpretation of it which comforts me so much in my loss. In a word: thank you. JAT

Much has been made of Brahms' lack of faith, but he kept a Bible at his bedside. Also note that in the third movement when the choir is singing "Wie soll ich mich trösten" or "How will I comfort myself", the uses the same chord and orchestration that his audience would have recognized from Beethoven's Ninth where the choir says "Uberm sternen muss er wohnen", or "Above the stars must he live". That and the harp parts make me think he believed more than is thought.

This recording touches me on so many levels. Honest, sincere, sympathetic. But technically brilliant in terms of tempo, colour, tone etc. I once knew a friend who said: "I am an atheist. I do not believe in God. But listening to Brahms's Requiem, I wonder if I am not wrong." Brahms was an atheist, too. But when he composed this, I also think he was visited by God. And he believed.

Yesterday I attended a performance of the Brahms Requiem. Large Choir, Large Orchestra and an interpretation with a lineage to Klemperer. Upon returning home I was compelled to listen to this recording and, yet again, understood this piece as Brahms intended, a requiem to give comfort to the bereaved. The interpretation of Grete Pedersen and the artistry of every voice and instrument creates a sublime, elegant and deeply moving aesthetic. Thank You.

I have just discovered this fine choir and its great conductor. Brahms 's "German Requiem" is a complex piece, which I have sung many times, and this somewhat "sober" version compares, I think, to the ones of the greatest conductors. I hope that Greta Pedersen and the Norwegian Soloists's Choir will get the international fame they deserve. I can't wait to see them perform in Italy.

@@thenorwegiansoloistschoir Just one curiosity (I am an amateur conductor): you singers are divided into two groups, but in each one there are sopranos, altos, tenors and basses, all mixed together. Am I right?
@thenorwegiansoloistschoir
@thenorwegiansoloistschoir 3 жыл бұрын
That's right, Marco :) Parts of the choir were placed around the audience in the beginning to create an experience of surround sound and closeness to the choral sound. We are quite used to this set up. The male and female singers were mixed in order to create more sound/timbre. Compared to the orchestra, we were quite few. The conductor also placed a quartet on the stage on each side closer to the audience. Some of us actually think it is easier to sing when we are standing next to someone from another voice group. Hope this answer your question :)

Exquisite. I may not agree with every musical choice that Pedersen made in this performance. Here and there they rushed a bit. Also I don't know if I agree with the dreamy, spherical sound here and there (especially in Mov. 6). Sometimes it seems that the inherent tension of the words and phrases are ignored in favor of this stable spherical choral sound... Yet the overall interpretation was on point and well performed. Great job by Markus Eiche too. Thanks for uploading.

This is how Brahms' Requiem is meant to be sung in my opinion. I've performed it several times and always been disappointed with the result because of an overabundance of vibrato in the voices. I've always preferred leaning towards straight tone, especially in a 100+ voice choir. The tone this choir utilizes is perfect for this piece.

I am not an expert, but I would like to give my impression. I have heard several versions of the Requiem, and found this quite different. Orchestra and chorus are smaller than usual, and deliver a more "camera" versión, more intimist. It fits very well wih the composition. You can hear more voices. Besides, camera is more difficult than large orchestra and chorus, so double bravo!
