The latest acquisition to the SRCD Oral History Project highlights Dr. John Bowlby. Dr. Bowlby (1907-1990) was a psychoanalyst who along with psychologist, Dr. Mary Ainsworth, introduced the theory of attachment, which revolutionized thinking about social development and the process of learning to love. In this video, Dr. Everett Waters (Professor at the State University of New York, Stony Brook) interviewed Sir Richard Bowlby, son of Dr. Bowlby, about the life and work of his father.

It seems as though expectations and standards were high in his household. That seems as though it would be difficult with a physical and emotional separation between the children and the parents

Do you think his desire for connection to his parents ultimately drove his work? Do you think he was in most ways mourning the living?

Could be the opposite. He could have came from a loving family and then he witnessed children with behavioural issues and started wondering why. I’m taking my personal experience as an example. I came from Philippines where attachment of parent specially mothers to child is a normal thing. And then I came to UK and was disoriented about unattached the children from parents here and I started to wonder what really are the difference(the group of people I was exposed, I don’t know if it’s the majority). So I started watching KZfaq about child’s behaviour and I came to know about John bowlby and his theory as I am raising a child now

Do you think he identified with the loss each of the boys experienced because he felt a lack of connection to his own parents?
