It’s just movie that takes itself very seriously yet the special effects make it seem a little silly. The acting is okay but it just is silly. It’s the opposite of the second independence movie where the visuals were amazing but the acting was god awful.

The movie went over budget so they started writing negative reviews before the movie came out about that and hurt the reception. The studio didn’t help by calling it John Carter. Unless you read ERB, that name means nothing and gives you no hint as to what it might be about.☹️

I liked this movie a lot, but my biggest issue was the strength balancing. He could leap like The Hulk can on earth, but when he punches someone, they can take the punch or just fall like normal. So the gravity only effects his legs or something?

@@idkpeerpressure2854 the theory is that a human being, born and grown on earth, has a body (bones, muscles) that is stronger that a being from Mars, because gravity on earth is 2,5 times greater that on Mars. Its the contrary of what happens to astronauts when they spend a few months in orbit, when they come back they dont have the strenght to stand up, and their bones have lost density and can break more easily.

What could have pulled it together is a re-write of the conversation between Matai Shang and John Carter. I would suggest a 'parallel universe Mars, or a Jurassic Earth era Mars', but at least the writers could have connected the Voice of Barsoom with the Therns. Also explanation that Therns are flesh-and-blood, but they can travel through both space and time, thus explaining their claims of immortality, yet they can die by a bullet.

Watch a film called The Bang Bang Club, the same guy plays a Pulitzer winning photographer in South Africa in the 1990`s called Kevin Carter...ironic I know, but he absolutely nailed that role!

This was actually a pretty good representation of the original stories' style. Remember John Carter is the first superhero by decades. Before Batman, Superman, Flash Gordon, or any of them, there was The Warlord of Mars, Jeddak of Jeddaks: John Carter.

Yeah - the really sad thing is that she does the smart, bad ass woman type so much better than basically any female character in the MCU, and yet she will never get a repeat performance. For those who don't know it the original author of John Carter is actually THE Edgar Rice Burroughs protrayed as the character Ned in the film - the same author who gave us Tarzan. Once you know that you can see John Carter is pretty much sci fi Tarzan with the role of stranger in a strange land reversed to the man John Carter instead of Jane in Tarzan - even the low gravity Mars jumping of Carter is riff on Tarzan swinging from vines in the jungle.

Um no, he was not the first superhero ever. We have recorded history from over 5,000 years ago and plenty of superhero's were created long before E.R. Boroughs was even born.

It would take a movie maker like Spielberg Lucas or Cameron who would have the vision to pull it off and also have the intestinal fortitude to stick to the text of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books unlike all the movie makers who have tried to bring his stories to the big screen There's a reason why ERBs books are so wonderful great story telling and attention to detail in creating worlds that have inthralled readers forever To many movie makers have tried creating the wheel instead of just sticking to what made the books so great in the first place

I read the martian series back in the 70's and loved it. The movie is ok but I never got the same kick out of it. I saw it back when it came out so I probably need to rewatch it.

Love the books very much. Wish they had made more of the movies but at least we see him winning in the end.

Well it is a bit long and sometimes self indulgent and well... But it is sci-Fi of more than a century ago. Also, I cannot really be harsh on this movie becausd Dejah Thoris is my first literary love. It is forever.

It was a well told classic fantasy story with a cool ending. Today Hollywood is unable to tell such a story. It's repeating action, boring nonsens dialoges and oneliners ...these days.

I liked it. A sequel would have been nice. But I think it's main failing was because it was nothing new to people. Like it was copying other sci fi/adventure movies. The problem with that though was it seemed like nothing new because those sci fi movies were actually copying John Carter. Possibly not the best example, but it'd be like growing up on Batman comics/movies and then seeing The Shadow (from early 1900s) or possibly even an old Zorro movie. In any event. So you have people coming out possibly feeling disappointed. And reviewers crapping on it because they don't know history.

The budget was just too high.

I read the John Carter books, so I knew exactly what to expect. The books are trash, and I thought the movie accurately portrayed that. My inner 13-year-old thoroughly enjoyed it. I might have to go back and watch it again.

As someone who has read all the Barsoom adventures growing up, I cannot possibly like this terrible butchering of Burroughs' masterpiece. Its just like modern day Disney to turn Dejah Thoris into a butt-kicking warrior.

If you like it, read the books. They were written in 1912 and onwards. Best series I ever read. The books were the inspiration for James Cameron’s Avatar, Star Wars and a lot of other science fictions movies. Very progressive for its time

Not long after the movie came out, there was an excellent article on the web about how the adaptation completely missed the soul of the books, which was that John Carter's excellent character inspired loyalty. Modern tech allowed the movie to be wonderfully close to the books visually, but it was mostly an empty exercise, as so often happens in Hollywood. In some ways the best thing about the movie was the first teaser trailer, which gave the feeling that the movie had gravitas, and soul.

@@AndSendMe ... I might have read about that too, but probably forgot about it. There are many movie adaptation that may have been off or had some artistic licenses/liberties, since you mentioned Hollywood, but still was good to have been developed. One recent example is the 2021 Villenueve Dune. Perhaps about half like it, for the same expectations & the other half did not. Same with the first historically greenlit Dune, by Lynch in 1984. Many people still find it better than the 2021 version, even if it too initially missed the soul & moral of the book. There have been further cuts of the 1984 version which have made it a little closer to Herbert's book. In any case, a greenlit first adaptation is still good, as It sets the precedent for being historically the first of media transfer/adaptation. Villenueve knew the problems Lynch faced 35 years earlier, so now he will learn from those lessons to make a better adaptation, including any positives from 1984 he could keep & utilize in some way. There are several camera angles in the 2021 Dune version that mimic the angles from the 1984 version. There are also any lessons to be had from Harrison's 2000 Dune miniseries version. Getting better adaptations should also happen with future versions of John Carter films, now that Disney has set the precedent for being the first (or second, as aforementioned) to make one, including perhaps trying to capture its soul, as you indicated, for next time.

@@robwebnoid5763 It all depends on the success of the first adaptation. In the case of JC it was a massive failure, and part of the frustration with its cold soul is that being more true to the novels' spirit might have helped it at the box office, as it sure seemed to do with the LOTR movies, which were in effect forced to be more true to the books than the instincts of the team initially pointed to.

Actually, I am being too broad. The problems with the movie are the way John Carter's character is portrayed (just a guy, ya know ...) and the attempt to complicate the plot in a way that lent toward sequels. But the threat of the 'big' villains was very conventional and dull, and for instance it was just stupid to have that moment here where "well they could have killed JC but they decided not to". That kind of stuff completely undercuts a hero, not that Hollywood has understood it since ages.

@@AndSendMe Even with those weaknesses, it was truly the abysmal marketing fiasco that killed it. There is a fantastic book on the subject "John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood" by M.D. Sellers. He makes it pretty clear that even if it was weak in characterization (as you say), a proper marketing scheme (along the line of early _Star Wars,_ say) could have carried it to victory. And then better productions would have had a chance as sequels. I remember seeing the first previews and posters and thinking _they're not even calling it "Warlord of Mars."_ *WtF?!?!?* It was released on 100th anniversary of the first book...and they never played up the character's historical importance in Sci-Fi. Those first previews should have said, "Before Superman... before Flash Gordon... there was JOHN CARTER."

It's the lower gravity on Mars that allows him to jump further with normal strength, albeit a bit exaggerated.
