George is a great guest and he certainly is a "subject matter expert" . This was an enjoyable listen Michael, Cheers

Probably the best interview and discussion in a long time here on the VC. I learned so much and I got inspired to continue to listening to music in any way shape and form. Thanks to Michael and George 🙏

KZfaq seems to be saturated with reviews of 'Pretzel Logic' and 'A Love Supreme' at the moment which is all well and good, but I particularly enjoyed this video - not for the review of this well regarded album, but for how pragmatic Mr. Borden spoke in regards to analog and digital recording, mixing and mastering. Not just that he was well spoken on the subject, but your conversation refrained from the rhetoric and posturing that litters so much of the audiophile landscape on KZfaq. Very refreshing. I regret that I'm unfamiliar with his body of work and will endeavor to remedy that.

I ordered it today in your shop, really looking forward to it, this is the most high end LP I ever got. I really love the Blue Train in the mono Tone Poet edition, as well as all the other albums I own. Really awesome artist.

How did I miss this one? I watched George’s piece on A Love Supreme, and it made me smile to hear you give it a M45 “Chapeau”! I only own the UHQR, so I can’t compare pressings. That’s why these videos are so valuable to me, and it’s great when the community shares experiences. We can’t all get into the weeds of comparing different pressings, and many I’m sure most don’t even have the best equipment to do so fairly. So of course when we are talking about these audiophile releases, some which are quite dear, and cause the average consumer to pause, it’s so valuable to have trustworthy, detailed information and reviews. This is such a passionate conversation and it really makes it more compelling to hear such deep and detailed discussions about the sound and music. Also, nice little reference to Phil Spektors Wall of Sound recording technique, (glad you explained it George) which certainly was an interesting technique, though I’m glad we moved on from the sound of those recordings ❤

Excellent discussion Michael. I love George talking about the UHQR boxes, this record deserves the ENCYCLOPAEDIC treatment! This is such a lure for me personally.. I grew up in the CD era, and my folks had a small record collection, but had moved to CDs by the time I came along. They still played their records, but collected CD’s. By the time I was collecting my own CD’s, every reissue was ‘Remastered’, which usually meant (without saying) mastered for headphones, loud, and awful sounding compared to their original counterparts, even on CD. So to me the idea that certain iconic, important records get this kind of bold, history book (or encyclopaedia) treatment is not just a statement about the importance of the record, it’s a statement that can only be made with the vinyl format, and they go to every effort to refine each element of their product. I can’t afford to get them all, and they are harder for me to keep up with now with the Atlantic 75th series and other great releases, but I sacrifice to get what I can because they are just so beautiful as a lover of music 🎶

When I first listen to this UHQR it was emotional, has impact, and understood the mood in the studio. The sense of the band was in my listening room. Just an amazing recording of such an important record in Jazz history.

A Love Supreme is in the pantheon of my favorite jazz records A true spiritual piece/peace Your guest gave a very well done review and nice insights Every review online has been very positive I have 6 copies including an original mono (fold down?) I have been giving the ALS AP 33 1/3 away as gifts every time I order records I have been cutting off on buying everything coming out and wasn’t going to purchase it Still dealing with the listening fatigue of the Steely Dan Pretzel UHQR I have 8 UHQRs and looks like I will be adding this one Thank you

I heard it was not great. He’s AP’s distributor for Europe. Do you really expect him to either lie or criticise it? Better to let others talk about it.

On another subject Michael, I heard I’m Not in Love by 10cc on the radio today and was thinking I wonder what it would sound like on your new sound system - that ‘bank of voices’ they used on the backing track should sound amazing.

So I have now gotten the UHQR and compared it to my AP 33. The UHQR does sound bigger/better. The sound seems less confined to the speaker, particularly with the drums. However, the difference is not dramatic. They are both very good. The downside of the UHQR sonically is that Coltrane (LC) is ANNOYINGLY LOUD relative to all other instruments. I have to shift the stereo balance slightly to the RC to listen comfortably at volume. Terrible. Worth the price? Yes IF you LOVE this Lp, otherwise stick with the AP33.

Michael, I'm not a subscriber, but only because the audiophile stuff goes over my head and I don't even have a turntable anymore - - though that may change. But I said already you have a good style, debonair, great baritone and the best glasses on the internet. You always worked well guesting on Rachel's Ghost, though I know you no longer show up: you made a valuable contribution even though you don't think you did - - and despite the culture clash and despite the rough-house humour. You offer a different vibe at a cool pace, and Rachel's Ghost is all about appreciating different vibes, right? even when vibes clash, even when its rough-house. So imagine this ice-breaker:- Rachel's Ghost live stream: one of the monitors in the panel is *45 RPM Audiophile* ...but it's just your iconic glasses, VERY close up on camera, live. You're not even wearing them. In far background, out of focus, during the stream, *Michael 45* can be seen listening to music through headphones, not even addressing the camera, just having a smoke and doing your own thing. You're oblivious to whatever's happening online, you're not there - - yet you *are* there because your glasses are close up, which would definitely have an effect, without you having to say a single thing. No 'Hello', no 'Goodbye' when the stream ends: your glasses remain your sole representative for 3 hours on screen while the rest of the panelists come and go. For maximum hilarity, the Einstein Aerolith should also be visible so occasionally you might appear out of focus in background changing a record and listening to the next album, not showing the album cover because you show no recognition that you are on stream. This is what used to be called a 'sight gag'. It would be hilarious and memorable. More importantly it would break the ice for next time. Whatever ground rules you discuss with Rachel for appearing after that are between you & Rachel behind the scenes. This rapprochement makes it easy to sort out some accommodation so mutual live streams are not simultaneous - - which also enables you to plug a live stream on Rachel's Ghost, and everybody's p-r benefits. A Win-Win. That's it. That sight gag is my ice-breaking solution and you are the first to hear about it. Okay? I sure hope you think about it - - that was a lot of typing.

I have a question for George 🙋‍♂️ I was intrigued to hear you say, “once it’s digitised, it should stay digitised until it hits the air to be played back.” I’m curious to know if this is referring to digital music on vinyl, or maybe something to do with archival of music? (Edit: I just heard you describe your recording process so it’s clearly not what you meant, and I could listen to you talk engineering all day!) Can you get deeper into what you mean by this? It just struck me as curious because I have heard some amazing digitally sourced records, and whilst I agree that an analog recording will usually sound better in its analog form, I think vinyl mastering are often more enjoyable even for digital recordings. But i think I’ve misunderstood the comment, so I just wanted to ask, thanks guys!

Has anyone compared the AP/QRP 2010 45 rpm Coltrane ALS mastered from the original master tapes with the AP/QRP 2023 ALS UHQR? For those who have the 2010 45 rpm version, is it worth it to get the UHQR beyond the extras?

I have the 2010 45 rpm too, but I'm leaning toward pulling the lever on the UHQR. I'm looking for one more review from a trusted source. I waited a long time before I bought The Doors first album, since it was from a copy, not the original master tapes. Then I bought it and was very impressed with the mastering by Doug Sax and the source material. A good source copy from back in the day can be as good as gold.

48:43 wow you smoke cigarettes next to your collection? Not judging, just wondering if the typical outer sleeve is enough to protect against "smoker's household" type of staining effects.
@67Pepper

The smoke will cause the jackets to smell, but no staining. One of my audio dealers smoked cigars all day long and every record jacket smelled like cigar smoke but cigarettes aren't nearly as bad.

@@67Pepper Ok maybe not staining then but the smell. Sleeves aren't airtight so if they smell surely the record itself smells as well.

I’m no expert on smoking, but I do believe this is water/glycerin vapor rather than combustion smoke. His vinyl is probably fine and smells like PVC and paper.
