This is the fourth movement of his masterpiece song-suite, "A Love Supreme." Coltrane recorded the album in one session in December 1964. It's a spiritual statement that musically celebrates the hopes for transcendence from the despair and oppression of African Americans in early sixties America. Coltrane here is actually playing the words to the poem "Psalm" that he wrote. The poem itself is printed on the back cover (of the original pressing).

One of the best albums ever. Please listen to A Love Supreme in one sitting. as @John Chu stated this was Coltrane's gift to God. If I remember correctly he could only play this three times in live.

If you enjoyed this, then you would also enjoy a song he recorded called " Alabama ". A song he recorded as a memorial to the four young girls killed by the KKK when their church was bombed in 1963. The subject matter is sad, but the music is touching.

John Coltrane was a true virtuoso. He played sax, clarinet and tenor sax. He practiced and practiced to be the best. On bus road trips He would practice shadow exercises to perfect his fingering on the sax for hours. This song is beautiful, i agree with the suspense of the drums. Sadly he died at 40 of liver cancer. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Adam. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

He also played soprano sax. Don't forget " My Favorite Things " which put him on the map.

A Love Supreme: the most famous jazz album of the 1960s. Interesting, Harri, that you should mention Ascension - that is also the title of a work by Coltrane from 1966 that perhaps is in your future as well. I wish I could give you 100 likes for Coltrane, but for that to happen you'd need to do 99 more Coltrane reactions :)

Best non-free saxophone jazz album I’ve ever heard. Along with Kind of Blue (which no coincidence he was also a major part of), two of the absolute must have music of the 20th century. If you’re starting a time capsule you failed if they’re not in there.

You were spot on Hari. This album was the precursor to John Coltrane leaving the conventions of music behind completely. It was released in 1964 and 1965 saw him break up his classic quartet and form a new group where he played music designed to hit not the ears but the mind (or soul if you're that way inclined). He and Pharoah Sanders both together in the same band and separately were the major proponents of what was known as ecstatic jazz whose function was to open the mind to higher realms. It's hard to listen to if you're new to it but it was never designed to be "easy listening". One of his earlier hits was his version of My favourite Things and one of his later albums "Live in Japan" from 1966 has him playing a version of the song which lasts for 57 minutes of relentless improvisation where the only discernible link to his previous versions is the title.

Sure, Coltrane's music was amazing, but his contribution goes deeper than that. Coltrane showed us a new math of music. That is why many novices just don't get him until after their ear is re-tuned. His note progressions and styling were so untypical compared to what we knew as music, he opened a whole new world

"Afro Blues", "Blue Train", "My Favorite Things", "Giant Steps", "Naima", are all timeless masterpieces of jazz and music. The Miles Davis Kinda Blue Album, which featured John Coltrane among other legendary jazz instrumentalists is an absolutely must listen, perhaps one of the most influential albums of all time. Jimmy Hendrix and Duane Allan listened to Kinda Blue 24/7 and it taught Duane who was like a sponge, absorbing every form of music that he heard, and inculcating much into his repertoire, how to play extending improvisational tunes without getting boring or old, and that album featured greatly into the Allman Brothers Bands Masterpiece "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"

@JohnChu This album. Cornel West said "The condition of truth is to allow suffering to speak.” And this album A Love Supreme is truth from start to finish. Psalm, for me, is Trane giving his whole soul to the universe and calling every soul to be loved without condition, forgiven without malice, and raised up without standing on the backs of others. It is Coltrane talking to the best in every one of us, to ascend and abide in faith and love.

Adam, I must apologize for my delayed response. I was making some brief travel trips when Harri played this. Still, John Coltrane getting past me is inexcusable, especially since I have long been an admirer of Coltrane's legendary catalog of jazz greats! To anyone who has not listened to 'Trane' I can not recommend him more highly. I have a vivid recollection of one of my brothers, who is really into jazz, playing Miles Davis' Kinda Blue album and Coltrane having gotten my full attention. It was also the start of my really listening to jazz music which continues to this day. If I had to make a Coltrane choice submission, this would be in the final three. Well done, Adam, and great review, Harri.

As someone else mentioned this is part of a larger piece, A Love Supreme. A somewhat similar standalone track that has become famous via movies and sampling, is Alabama. I’ve never heard an instrumental talk like that one does.

when I requested it, this is what I wrote. I also wrote a whole stream of consciousness piece once while listening to the whole album I never stopped writing. The second is maybe the most important piece of music on one of the most important albums of all time. It is pure forgiveness, a blessing, a peace, a calm. A Love Supreme's last track Psalm by John Coltrane. This piece is so filled with grace and empathy it never fails to make me weep

OK. It's official. You are now an honorary North Carolinian, for you have hit the trifecta, and I am here to celebrate your accomplishment. You see...within just a few short hours, you have highlighted on your great show three of our brightest lights: James Taylor, Avett Brothers and now brother Trane, who is a spiritual force from Hamlet, home of my brother-in-law. You are now the proud processor of the key to the state. BTW Legend is told of John having overnight jam sessions that went on for hours and hours. We do that down here. Roberta Flack is also from down here. Her "First Time Ever I saw Your Face" is of the first water.

This is the culmination of his Magnus Opus, "A Love Supreme". He's introduced us to the most enjoyable moment with Part I (Acknowledgement), gotten frenetic with Part II (Resolution), and set us swinging with Part III (Pursuance). Just like Pat Metheny's "The Way Up", each of these parts is a complete totally enjoyable song on its own, but makes the most sense when viewed in the context of the whole. This right here is beauty immaculate. He's winding things down for us, and he has indeed gotten spiritual (*Fun fact, he does in fact have a very wonderful tune by the name of "Spiritual" which is also a joy to behold). It was very intentional that this was how he wanted this to come to a close: pensive, a bit melancholic, prayerful, stoic. Don't just listen to this part alone. Take the whole journey of this album, then almost weep when you come to this end. It's a wonderful ride. Great Reaction Bro
