John Deere 1025R fuel filter change + water in bowl?

We do a main fuel filter change on a 2015 John Deere 1025R with the Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel engine.
How much water does it actually take to float the WIF (water in fuel) indicator? With a syringe, a metered amount of water is put into the filter bowl to see how much will float the red WIF disc.
It's hard to get into the habit of checking the indicator, but needs to be checked on a regular basis.

Thank you for watching! I am a huge TTWT fan and subscriber too. I really enjoy our little 1025R with Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel. Only three weeks ago I was clearing our driveway of 8 inches of snow with it and the FEL with The Snow Edge on, and today will be dragging downed trees to the burn pile with it (will hit 55 degrees today). Work safe and have a good one!!

Great video.. very clear and informative. I wasn’t sure if the shutoff valve needed to be open or closed for this procedure. It’s opposite of what you think. Open is 90 degree to the fuel line pointing at the O and closed is inline parallel with the C. Thank you

Good video. That particular filter set up is the "el cheapo" John Deere version. John Deere sells a much better replacement for that unit. There are other videos on YT showing the replacement filter. What's wrong with this separator/filter system? 1. Only a single mounting bolt 2. Press fit hose barbs 3. No bowl drain 4. Not enough capacity 5. Water can saturate filter element 6. Prone to leaking in certain applications due to inability to properly tighten. I have a very similar device on my Takeuchi excavator. I am currently replacing it as well as modifying the location for ease of access. My new separator is larger, has threaded hose barbs, easy to use drain valve for regular maintenance, and has two mounting bolts, and no paper filter element. I leave that to the existing screw in fuel filter which is further down the line mounted directly on the engine and changed regularly. So when I am done I will have a large capacity water separator, easier maintenance access, and a perfect compliment to my existing fuel filter.

That's darn good news! Do you know any part numbers for the upgrade? My local JD dealer just lost his dealership with John Deere because he refused to modernize the building. I really can't blame John Deere because the place was looking run down. I'll research that upgrade. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@pmtips4482 I don't have the part number. I have asked two different KZfaqrs for the number, but nothing yet. Also, in my case, I bought a generic water separator on eBay (fits Isuzu diesel truck) and modified that. Thanks.

The problem child is that filter under the foot rest. My engine sputtered at full throttle, and I changed the engine fuel filter first. Still sputtered. Found that elusive second filter, and it was filthy. Changed it ( got covered with fuel as usually ) and the tractor ran like a scared rabbit. I would opine that you have to change the underneath filter at least twice as many times as the bowl filter.

Yes, that little in-line filter has caused many problems on all brands. My Dad has a Kubota ZT diesel and performed all scheduled maintenance. My brother took over the mower on maintenance and mowing, he forgot the little in-line filter that is in a bad place on that Kubota. After about 4 years it was nearly plugged completely. FWIW....reading the owners manual never occurred to them till after it died and would not restart.

@@pmtips4482 I was lucky. The tractor still ran. It just wouldn't produce full power at PTO engine speed. I went back to the owners manual, and found the second filter. Other than the fact that the moron who installed the thing put the one fuel line clamp ears up, it was fairly easy to change. I do need to get those fuel line clamps.

Nice video when you turn the key and the pump starts clicking should it stop when the bowl is full? I noticed after I changed the filter the clicking noise of the fuel pump doesn’t stop clicking even when the bowl is full. Also when I close the valve to change the filter the fuel continues to flow .
@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 9 ай бұрын
That fuel pump is super low pressure and low amp draw, about 3 to 4 psi and .5 to 1.2 amps. It is continuous. It will change sounds as the bowl fills up and/or any change in pressure build up. You may need a new shut off valve. Mine is getting so hard to turn I need pliers, it's way too hard to turn with my thumb and index finger. I just checked it and there is a subtle detent position when you open or close it completely, so be aware of that detent. Good luck and thank you for watching!

@ronwood3214 Ron, I put on two small pinch clamps on each side of the fuel line at the little inline filter under the left floor board. I did a video on using them. They will definitely stop fuel flow to the filter base too. You might try that. Good luck!

From the tank to the filter bowl, not much. It is supplied by a small 12 volt pump. It acts as a lift pump to the injection pump. From the injection pump to the injectors, it is typical high pressure. Thanks for watching!

Hi Jay, I apologise for the late reply. This one didn't show up properly on the usual notices I get. The 1025R fuel bowl and filter isn't really a separator but the red disc will float to indicate water but I can't remember to look at it often enough. You've got me interested in researching a true water separator now. Thank you for watching and commenting!

The 1025R tank is a point down wedge shape so water accumulates in the bottom of the tank. The main fuel filter then doesn't really work. You'll see the engine stumbling and stalling, especially on a hill. The better solution is to screen out water when fueling with a Mr. Funnel Fuel Filter (these come in various sizes). I have moved over the years to their biggest model simply because it's faster.
