These pony’s are designed to run that fast, when starting in cold temps. I believe they said to run them like that for a couple minutes to warm the diesel.

There is no throttle on the pony engines. They have a start position and a run position. They run for a few minutes like this or longer to warm up the coolant for the diesel engine in cold weather, then you engage the pony clutch to turn the big engine over.
