Reminds me of when I brought my 1944 Farmall A tractor home. It's been a great help in the woods. Hauled years of wood, provided many rides for the kids and so many other countless jobs.

My grandfather restored a '53 JD Dozer just like yours. That two-lung putput sound is awesome and after he built a new blade and hydraulic system for his it became a genuine workhorse. I look forward to seeing you work on this and seeing you work with it later.

that's a little dandy Cody. The nice thing about the old stuff is, most everything on it can be repaired. I love working on these old projects. I'm sure that plenty of your viewers can answer questions or help you find or make parts as needed. I hope you convert it to 12 volt, it's pretty easy and then you can use your winch on it too! Congrats on your find!

There's something to enjoyable about operating them, it's like immersing yourself into our nations founding roots...*very cool!*

It is always nice to have the skills to work on anything, and if you don't have the skills just jump in and do something. Hands on learning is the greatest way to do things and If you get stuck on something that is where you networking come into play. I am always picking things up to work on, keeps the mind going. Good luck and have fun with the new toy. I would love to have the time to help you get it running.

Congrats on the find. I am looking forward to this series. I grew up around JD 2 cylinder tractors and I have wanted a 40 crawler since I was a boy. I helped restore a model 40 on tracks , back in the winter of '95. The owner was my landlord, Ed Page , ( John Deere fan & collector ) . . . We took it down to 'bare bones' ! Every rivet was drilled out, with oversize ones taking their place . . .at the outset, I asked , ''Ed, how are we going to crown the rivets ? " . . .his reply , " Put the frame on the anvil, insert the rivet, then 'carefully beat the crap out of it ! ' We worked well together. . .he was 76 years young, & I was in my prime @ 40 . . . we worked the rivets 'cold', clamped the frame 'piece at a time', working in tandem 'hammering the rivets' to a nice crown . . . He bought the tractor NEW in '54 . . .first job was digging a basement , that covered two years of payments ! ( When he bought the tractor, his dad asked him, 'What are you gonna do with 'that little thing', CLEAN OUT FLOWERPOTS ?' ! ) Toughest job in the restoration : Reworking the final drive gears . . . they were very costly to 'replace', so we 'hardface welded' the gears, then ground them to a 'snug fit'. . .finally 'dressing each tooth to a good RUNNING FIT . The output shaft from engine to final drive was also a 'bear'. . .persistence paid off though ! I wouldn't think for a second of selling it as SCRAP . . .( Parting it out would quadruple your investment . ..AT LEAST ! ! ! The magneto ALONE would fetch a healthy sum ! The following winter, I restored an old cider press, made ''for the John Deere Plow Company" vintage 1895 ~ what a chore : it was a 'basketcase', but was ''COMPLETE" . . .all square head screws & bolts. . .rust removed, wire brushed to a polish . . .same with the gears . . .the 'applewood PRESS SCREW ' had a few minor cracks, but was SOUND . . . the frame's wooden members were originally 'pinstriped' . . .with apple leaves & fruit in the corner joints . . .( I had an old catalog to use for 'reference'. . .'first thing I did with the wood , was to lightly clean it with mineral spirits . . .AMAZINGLY, the faint lines of the 'striping' were STILL THERE ! ( I was a sign artist at the time, and had tools of the trade to do the piece 'JUSTICE' ) Had I been photography minded , I would now have some 'bragging pictures ' . . .OH WELL ! Sorry to ramble on ! Ed had a huge collection, from 'hit & miss' . . .Model A through GP's . . .along with several 'YELLOW' models . . .I think they were model 'L' ? or LI (Light Industrial ) Bottom line : It was the 'LINDEMAN' brothers who originally 'put JOHN DEERE on TRACKS' . . .I'm fairly certain that it was in the early twenties , I've watched some videos . . .amazing . . .watching a 22 horse 'properly geared' tractor , pushing ten to twelve inch diameter trees "UP" a 40 degree grade ! RAW HORSEPOWER, correctly DRIVEN ! Good luck, and 'ENJOY' ! ( I LOVE OLD IRON ! )

I did not respond to your New Year speech, but wanted to tell you God was in what you shared. I like this crawler you picked up. I had property in Big Sur and had a Case dozier from the fifties. I had it for 35 years and did a lot of work with it. Recently God had me give the Big Sur property away. I had built a small house on it with well and off grid wind generator. Have enjoyed the property for all these years, but looking forward to next spot God is heading me to. He has told me He is giving me some property near Eureka, California. From your shows, He has showed me the property will have a large barn like you have to work in. I love cutting trees up into wood and building things with the wood. Have enjoyed your posts. God continue to be a blessing to your family. Tom

Looks like we are both doing a crawler project. I bet that you get yours done first! I really like those little John Deere crawlers. If it doesn't work out don't scrap it, JD lovers everywhere will cry. Mine is a similar size Case 310D from the early 1960's. It runs but had a few things break in the trans. I will be showing my progress on youtube also, when I get the time to work on it.

My Uncle has JD tractor, bought the thing in 1946, my cousin still runs the thing to this very day. Talk about getting value from something, next year will be the 68th year of doing farm work with it, I make it my business to be around for haying time. Brings back my youth.Shifted from Dairy to Beef cattle these days. That dozer is a a nice project. My guess, you will have to do some engine work, those engines are bullet proof.

Used to drive the IH version of this years ago - 1979-1982, pulling a firebreak plow. Ran good, and the only thing I didn't like was driving it up the steel ramp onto the steel trailer, in the rain! That was a very slippery situation. The machine did make an awesome firebreak in a very short time, tho, helping us contain wild fires, or prep for controlled burns.

Those things are really useful! We have an old Cat one kind of like that. We use it to drag logs (with the winch), run the wood splitter, build roads, run the hay elevator, and wrap round bales. So versatile, and the fuel economy is amazing, definitely beats running a tractor to turn relatively stationary equipment! Ours has a maybe 10 or 15 gallon tank under the seat and it will run all week on it!

Love the old tractors/dozers... to me, their simplicity is what I like the most about them. Awesome find. Wish it were mine. I used to run a Cat D8 at work to stockpile clinker, gyp, stone, slag and to maintain roads and opening up additional stockpiling areas also to push stone and dirt up in the quarry after blasting into stockpiles to load trucks and crusher to belt down to Plant. We used to maintain stockpiles of slag which were 60 feet high. Huge stockpiles. I love running heavy equipment and have been looking for something like that but not much around my area. A little D4 would be nice but I would prefer a D6 which is a little more versatile Awesome video thanks so much for sharing your life

BTW Cody they make a little dirt cap for those power pole connectors that attaches to the screw and gives you a rubber cover to plug the hole when not in use to keep mud out when mounted under a bumper like that. They also make a little handle you can mount on the connector to help plugging in cable sets into under bumper connections. I made up a 50' set of jumper cables years ago with these connectors and they rock because I can help anyone I need to but no one ever asks to borrow my nice cables because they won't work on their setup.

Nice looking machine. Does not look like it was used to much or abused. I think your going to make out alright on this project. There are lots of aftermarket parts for the older tractors .I have a 35 massey tractor and i don't think there is any thing that is not available. Also being such a nice basic design makes other possibilities not so far off, such as repower. The thing I like about these old gems is they dont have to be perfect to do the job.Good luck can't wait to see the rebuild.
