This is an excellent mower. One of the most quiet and comfortable I've ever used! Forgot to mention it does have cruise control I haven't used yet. Thanks for your view and hope it helps in your decision!

I bought mine in 2016. I use it year round and plow snow. I work it hard in the winter here in Northern Ontario. I take good care of it and it's still going strong. Great machine.

Great mower. I’ve had mine 12 years. I just replaced the mower deck do to rust through in several spots. ($975). The deck has some low spots that will retain moisture and dirt. Store the mower and deck dry. Love the mower. I’d buy again. I’ll keep the deck dry from now on.

I used to hose it off, now I use my 20 gallon air compressor with a long blower to clean off the deck.

Nice review GearShots. Since I'm on my 5th year with the very same mower I thought I would weigh in on some of the comments. 1. The mower should always be shut off while running wide open. Because of the way the solenoids are setup on these engines today they can backfire when shut off at lower speeds. Backfire can be fatal to the engine when it is hot. The steel valve seats in the engine are pressed in the aluminum block by heating the area around the seating insertion point. when a backfire happens while hot the area is expanded already and the explosive force can blow the seat out. At the least this is a costly repair and can even ruin the block because the valve will hit the seat when it comes out and indent it into the aluminum block damaging the seat insertion area. 2. I'm 6'5" tall and weigh 325. I mow 2.5 acres and some of it pretty rough. i pull a cart around quite a lot with as much as 2 or 300 Lbs of top soil tree trimmings etc. and have no problems with the transmission. As with any product you can get a lemon from the factory. I read every forum and review on this mower I could find before purchasing and did find a few instances where the tranny had failed and a few where the crankshaft had came apart and scattered engine parts all over the yard. But you can find these instances with all mowers (expensive and cheap brands) and all the different engine makes (Briggs, Kohler, Kawasaki's Honda's). This happens because humans make errors at the factories and the big CNC machines that make everything can have problems (tooling wear, machine operator makes a mistake programming the tooling job and electronic failures just to mention a few). I am half way to the 10 years someone mentioned they want the mower to last and mine is just like new. Take care of the maintenance and you should also get many years from this mower! Cheers

Throttle down before turning the engine off , I have the same mower and shut it down while at full throttle and the engine ran backwards and bent the aluminum pushrod and dropped the steel pushrod to the bottom of the crankcase. I had to pulled the cylinder head , stake the valve seats and am now driving with a pushrod laying at the bottom of the engine. Have 206 hrs now with 20 hours with pushrod at the bottom of the engine.

Good video - thanks! I bought a D140 (new to me) with 150 hours and full service records. I just added the front bumper. It has all the features that I was looking for to replace my LT1000 Craftsman. The two blade Craftsman lasted many years but the tough stalky weeds in my two acres meant that I had to go over the lines that the two blades missed - a lot of extra time in the field that is better spent doing something more productive. The three blades on the D140 plus the safety of the "mow in reverse button" and the Power PTO button really made this an attractive buy for me. I had looked at a newer version to the D series at my local Deere dealer but it was $3,000 all in. What I saved will earn money for me in my investments. I would not recommend buying older tech machines at a big box store.

It's a good machine for a small yard if you don't plan on climbing hills or towing loads with it. The transmissions are cheap. But they are an entry-level machine so there's not much you can expect from them. If you want it to last don't shut it off at wide open throttle. Always let it idle. I had an LA150 that I sold and replaced with a 316 which is 20 years older. Plus I have an '83 210 that I restored. They both feel like tanks compared to the LA150.

Sometimes you cant. Ive got 5 acres that's three hours from where I actually live and I only make it down there here or there. If I go down to mow, it doesnt matter the weather. Rain or dry, its gotta be mowed. Ive even ran my D140 in the pouring rain in May because I knew I wouldnt be back for two weeks. If I didnt mow it at that time because of the rain, I knew the grass would be 2 feet tall the next time I made it down. Had no choice.

"Just FYI" Be sure and change the oil in the rear end / transmission @ 50 hours. I purchase a used one that would not move. It have 244 hours on it and the dealer did not tell the owner that was very important. A replacement rear end from John Deere is 800 dollars but can be rebuilt for less than half. The mower is in excellent condition with the exception of this problem.

We use one of these on our small farm and have had it for about 3 years and its been the best mower we have had! Just be sure to clean the grass out of the top of the deck with an air compressor or water hose because all that wet grass sitting on there will eventually rust out the deck.

+FireFighter#47 I was smart and started putting the hose on the back of a little shop vac I have with a nozzle on it. Perfect amount of air to blow dirt off the mower and deck. Such a good mower. I guarantee you, *_MAYBE_* - I say, *_maybe_* if you change the oil every 20 hours, clean or replace the air filter likewise, watch - with a flashlight - down the throat of the intake for dirt sneaking in, and resolve it immediately if it does, and you might, possibly get that 10 years from the Briggs - BUT I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT!

I really like the tractor but I expected more from a 22 HP mower my old 20 HP yard machine with at 46 inch deck never bogged down. and sounded way cooler. I had a 8 HP simplicity with a 44 inch deck and that was a beast. overall I am very pleased with the tractor. glad I went with the Deere over the others. the only thing I highly recommend is put some Amazon led bulbs in the headlights.. well worth the $9

Thinking of getting one of these. Every mower out there has entire forum pages dedicated to what a turd mower it is. Eventually you have to just bite the bullet and pick one and cross your fingers. For 2018 the E140 is my only John Deere option because all their other models have their new SCAM "Easy Change" oil system that forces you to buy their $40 filter.

Go to a dealer and buy a 300 series at least. These box store models leave a lot to be desired. I have the Craftsman version and its garbage. Until you buy a dealer model you are just getting John Deere's MTD/AYP version, they aren't built as good as a true John Deere. The models sold at dealers have heavier duty drive systems, better decks, overall a better built machine. These box store models are cheap for a reason, they are just throw away basically.

I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. kzfaq.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

I bought a JD D-130 6 years ago, it has 150 hours on it and have never had a problem with it. Oil gets changed every 50 hours, new fuel filter and air filter every spring, plus new spark plugs. For the winter months I use Stabil in the fuel system and I put a battery tender on it. After the last mowing in fall, I use fogging oil inside the engine. I grease every fitting in spring. The only thing I have replaced is the headlight bulbs, I put in LED bulbs, and have replaced the blades with Gator Blades. It's a good machine and lots of bang for the buck.

Get a lot of pictures with it because in two years it will be all rust. The transmission is a Tufftorq K46. Junk. The one thing you can do to help it is to drop it out, take off the cooling fan, and drain it. Replace the 2.3 quarts of 10W 30 with 5W 50 full synthetic. I'm not joking. If you want actual John Deere quality, Lowes isn't the place to buy one. What you have purchased is the "consumer grade" mower. Basically, they are considered throw away mowers. BTW, who mows the grass when it's so wet. I'll give you credit and say you did it for the video. Real John Deere mowers are sold at John Deere dealerships. That $10/hr "sales associate" at the box store bent you over. Good luck...

+Quick2000 Something was lost in the translation. John Deere does indeed make the consumer grade mowers (basically anything below the 300 series). They are just different. Inexpensive parts are part and parcel for the entry level mower. I'm not saying Tufftork doesn't make almost all their trannys (they do), but to say the k46 will stand up to the k58 or k66 is folly. I can't tell you if JD started this downward trend or they followed to keep up with the likes of their competition. It's just business, don't take it personally. Gearshots is correct in saying "ya get what ya pay for", but in a bad way. Google "John Deere class action suit". Not the horse power rating one as that includes all mowers. BTW, My 1987 180 series will outlast anything on Lowes showroom floor today. Why, actual quality.

+Quick2000 Your right, my initial comment was harsh. I'll tell you why. My chiropractor gave me a '06 145 automatic (not a LA145) for nothing. The tranny would cease to work after 30 mins. of cutting. Long story short, I dropped it out and replaced the right axel because it was bent. After I sealed it back up (RTV 108) I filled it with Valvoline 75w 90 gear oil. It was a tip I learned from a tractor forum. The body and deck were brought down to bare metal with a 4" wire wheel. New primer, paint, 3 spindles and pulleys, belts, fluids, filters, and countless hours just trying to prove myself wrong. So far I've ran 2 tanks through it (6 hours) and not a bit of slowing down. My bitterness towards Gearshot was uncalled for, but nobody should shell out 2K for a machine that rides on reputation, not quality. And remember, if it has tits or tires, your going to have a problem with it...

We've got a LT150 that was given to us, and at the time, the deck was completely worn out. (no hr meter, but it was clearly 100's of hrs old.) I welded in some replacement steel around the spindles where the deck was kaput. Replaced a corroded float bowl on the 15hp Kohler, gave it a good lube and tune, AND, 1300 HOURS later, our k46 is still plugging along just fine - and no, I've never done anything but blow the debris off it! If it had had an hr meter on it from factory, I'm willing to bet it's long past 2000 hours. (Maybe I should pull that thing out and dump and change the oil in it?) In fact, we just replaced the OEM drive belt on it for the first time. I'm equally impressed with the Kohler, why JD went to the despicable-disposable B&S I'll NEVER understand. We were a former dealer for all major engine manufacturers, our bone yard has NO Kohlers, only Tecumsehs' and Briggs'. This thing hasn't so much as coughed a puff of smoke since we took possession of it. Moisture in the fuel is the only engine problem ever occurring, but that's nothing to do with the engine's character or quality. My wife loves this thing and runs the wheels off it mowing 5 plus acres a week. Tried to get her interested in our bigger ones, JD 212 and an IH 44" but she hates their "bigness?" After all these years, we're just now considering looking for another just like it, hopefully with a deck that's not crusted out - unfortunately, almost all the new ones have the vile B&S engines, which as I said, we have a boneyard of from customers experiencing their many varying fatalities. Anyway, there has to be "other" reasons people are experiencing problems with the K46. . . Maybe they switched from U S made to Chinese, if so, there's no hope for them.

I will never again buy anything john deere going forward. my 2016 riding mower oil leaked, due to the downward design of the drain pipe, after mowing a bumpy field for 2 hours. Mower had 75 hours, but was out of warranty. john deere was extremely rude, told me it was my fault albeit they admitted to having changed engine design twice since then and had absolutely no willingness to compromise. JD mowers at the lower end are Murray mowers and JD is relying on their farm tractor reputations. Buy anything else. You are paying for the green paint is what everyone jokes about.

Any way to grease the deck spindles? Your going to love the price JD is going to charge you to rebuild those when the deck bearings go out.
@TheGearShots
@TheGearShots 7 жыл бұрын
+MrZipperhead16 yeah there's plenty of grease points on the deck. A local JD supplier will pick up the mower and do any maintenance that needs done on it for about $300. We're gonna get that done right before winter since it'll have almost 50 hours on it at that point!
@MrZipperhead16

I didn't see any on top of the spindles. Are they on the sides? I run JD z-traks at work ant their a pretty good mower, just pricey as hell for what you get IMO.

The D140 does indeed have grease zerks
@johnwayne5015
@johnwayne5015 7 жыл бұрын
There is a zerk fitting on top side of the mower deck on the base of each of the 3 spindles. You can get to them without removing the plastic spindle covers but it is difficult. I use a ratchet with a deep well 7/16 socket (I'm pretty sure it's 7/16) with a medium extension. There are 2 screws on one cover and 3 on the other side. The middle spindle has no cover.

I've got a LA140 Automatic which had been refurbished prior to getting it. I noticed that you like to cut in the morning and that will tick you off at the shape your deck will be in. I mow dry but this deck was already rusted some and the body lost its paint next to the foot pads. I just finished painting everything and replacing the drive belt and rollers. The deck will have all new spindles and blades and belt. My only issue is I wish you would have shown the area bu the cruise control. I have two springs that are part of that area. Any chance you can show a shot of that???? It would be greatly appreciated.

considered it a real John Deere is it not? It looks flimsy and I don't mean to knock your tractor but I have 140.. it's nineteen seventy-two the frame is large enough you could support a full size diesel truck off of most likely. It has the hydraulic lines for the front in the Live PTO for the back. it's got a blade, roto tiller, snow thrower, thatcher, wheel weights, chains and it's got a fifty-four inch cut and it looks nothing like this tractor.. . I think the one I got is considered more of a farm tractor but mows my yard..

Most of these home mowers have sealed bearings around the spindles. When you buy these lawn tractors the bearings are not greaseable because they are "sealed." John Deere is no different. Go to kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mpmVdpWArs2cZaM.html that shows you how to fix that problem. If they are sealed, putting grease through a zert fitting does no good. You will be replacing bearings if you don't make them greaseable. This is a way to keep repairs centers with work and sales of parts going. If you handing at simple repairs, you will be able to make the bearing greaseable. Minimum tools required. Socket and wrench. Punch and hammer. Thin blade to remove one side of the bearing. The other side stays sealed.

Let that idle completely down before shutting it off. And wait for the grass to dry before cutting or else that deck will rust out. Also those little mowers don't do very well pushing snow.

The engine is good but I've have had a lot of trouble with the cutting deck/belt wear and keeping the belt on. This is a cheaper series of John Deere mowers but wow, it's bad !!! 👎

I had one of these. It sucked, ended up getting a replacement because it broke so much. Then the replacementhad issues too. Just never did any better than my cub cadet did.. It's a throw away mower. Ended up getting a xmark and never looked back. Use to love john deere but this is just a cheapo mower. We see them for sale with less than 50 hours where I live all the time. John deere has become over priced throw away mowers
