Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose small engine problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

Should've shown you testing the switch with a multimeter to know what to look for in a good/bad switch.

That thing had an idler pulley bearing that was bad or maybe a muffler that was wasted because it sounded like hell when it was running. Good video. Would have been cool for you to take a test light and probe the terminals on the old switch vs the new switch to show the viewers the difference between the bad and good switches.

good video. Thanks for another worthwhile video. Your photography and editing is very good. Safety switches (in seat, Neutral, an PTO )are in series and will not allow power to solenoid unless each is closed. Tractor will not crank (turn over) motor unless each is closed. Seat safety switch located in seat bottom. If operator gets off seat, the engine ignition system is grounded and engine dies. Neutral safety switch located with brake/clutch mechanism or on shift lever mechanism (model dependent). If it is not operating, the engine will not crank (turn over). PTO safety switch function is located inside the PTO switch itself. The PTO switch has 4 or 5 or 6 connector pins. PTO switch must be in off position---PTO NOT activated-ie blades NOT turning--- for safety switch function to allow tractor to crank (turn over). Some tractors also have a safety switch that prevents backing up (reverse travel) while the mower deck is engaged (Model dependent). This safety switch usually disengages the deck. I know you made sure these safety switches were operating, before testing the electric PTO clutch as "good:" The electric PTO clutch makes an audible click when energized. The diagnostic testing (similar to above) could be useful in a video too. One (or more) safety switches not operating has brought many lawn tractors to the shop for repairs. Hope this helps.

For anyone with a D105 that will crank but won't start, it might be the carburetor solenoid. Best approach is to check for spark first, if you have that, it's not a safety switch or electrical problem and it's probably a fuel problem...clogged line, dirty carb, etc. but the easiest thing to check is the solenoid. Just use a 1/2 inch to remove it and the fuel bowl that it holds in place. With the key in the on position, it should be pulled in so that fuel can flow. Mine chattered. I went on Amazon and bought one for 12.99 and my tractor started right up. I'm posting this comment on all of the videos I watched while trying to diagnose this issue with the hope that it helps someone find the problem quicker than I did...LOL!!!

This calls for a longer video, Don. Just about anybody can change a switch. What about checking safety interlocks? Or is something drawing too much current, like wtbm suggests, which would take out that ignition switch, like you cautioned? You left out the diagnostic procedure.

Interesting . But you did said you checked the clutch .What I find here most of the time, that i see a bad pto switch , it is the clutch drawing to much and melting the inside of switch . A lot of times it melts by the terminal where one can see but not always , . Maybe JD , just had a run of bad switches .

I think you would start by checking the belt for slippage on the clutch and the general condition of the belt itself. Next, I think you might check the electromagnetic air gap on the clutch itself. I bet Don has a video on each of these.

Good Afternoon Donyboy, I have an John Deere S-170 Lawn Tractor and when i engage the electric mower deck PTO Switch, the tractor starts to run roughly, sputtering and sounding horrible. I have clean the deck to the point where you could eat off it in hopes that the build up of grass on the deck was the reason it was running rough when pto engaged. It is still running rough once pto is engaged any Ideas? I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance.

How did you check the clutch? My S2554 pto stopped, after I pulled it and put it back it engaged. It's been sitting for a couple of weeks and now doesn't engage. I thought I bought a new switch but of course can't find it. I noticed on the female plug one corner is a solid with the switch having corresponding missing pin, the next slot on plug is just a hole however switch has a pin. I've looked for a dangling wire just in case but nothing . Tried to find a blow up of the female receiver to see if that particualr slot should have something or not. Engine will not crank at all even with a jum so either switch is bad or possibly clutch. Going to check resistance on switch.

One question relating to this PTO switch. How could I modify this to eliminate the reverse cutoff, As you know when backing up, you need to hold the PTO switch up. This is a mild inconvenience, but I need to do this so often, I've found myself turning the blades on when I'm not even mowing as my brain says when you back up you need to lift this switch. I find for me this safety installed is more dangerous. Any idea how to bypass this? Or where I could find the wiring diagram so I can figure this out myself? Thanks!

@AnthemBassMan
@AnthemBassMan 8 жыл бұрын
If you have the $$$, a John Deere X series, x475, x485, X500, etc... You can mount up to a 62" mower deck, the tractors have full hydraulics, and you an get either a front plow blade, snow blower, or snow brush for it. And being the X series tractor, you step up to a cast iron frame, powered PTO, and drive shaft mounted attachments. Plus the have locking differential rear ends too. They are truly a small John Deere tractor, not a glorified riding lawn mower.
@turdsandwicher

Thank you sir. Ill have to check those out. This is for a snowblowing/ grass business. Any other machines you can think of? I already have some zero turns but dont think they would work in snow. Need to step up to a ride on in the winter.
@AnthemBassMan
@AnthemBassMan 8 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't care for zero turns. They're fine for mowing, but are pretty much useless in the winter. But any solid garden tractor should work for you. Just stick with a reliable brand. They are built better for way heavier workloads than you typical rider mower. Even older models will perform for you. Older Wheel Horse, Gravely, Kubota, Cub Cadet, even the older Sears Suburban. As long as the tractor is solid, you should be good. Up until a about four years ago, my Dad mowed and plowed snow with his 1972 Cub Cadet 129 garden tractor. The guy he sold it to is still using it.

I'll push the switch down, pull it back up, PTO turns back on, cuts fine for another 10 minutes, 45, 30 minutes, then off again. Seat switch seems fine, brake seems to be operating okay, engine starts when it's depressed and keeps running on release. All seems to be fine until I begin mowing. Any suggestions? I than turned off the clutch PTO switch & headed to the garage. By the time I got there the PTO clutch was smoking bad. I let the mower cool down because the PTO clutch was to hat to touch. After cooling down the clutch was locked up and met any problem & ran great. When I engaged the PTO switch it kills the engine. I removed the tractor seat switch & engine started good but as soon as I engaged the PTO switch the engine died. I than put a by pass wire on the seat switch & tried again the engine tarted good & ran good but as soon as I engaged the PTO switch the engine dies. All the testing done was with the PTO clutch removed because the clutch is burnt up & locked up. Can any one help with this problem?

I would probably start by figuring out how to bridge the switch to make sure it is at fault. Safety sallies will want me to take the blades off or remove the belt from the pulley. Also if the switch burns out there's probably a reason so we'd need to know voltages etc to test for (it can probably go bad just from being left outside in the rain). If a bad ignition switch can burn out the pto switch then JD needs to add more circuitry to their product, that's not something the end consumer should have to worry about.

More circuits is exactly what it doesn’t

@@ClaytonBigsby01 Let me correct myself, or rather, elaborate. If there's a hot wire running from the ign switch to the pto, that wire needs to be fused. It can run into the fuse box, through a fuse then on to the pto. Standard acceptable circuit which far outweighs having the current issue occur.

Hi Donyboy, I have a troy bilt tiller with a 6.0 HP techmseh engine on it. I can't seem to find the tag with the model number, but on the outer housing I see a number H60-755056 with a ser 2069D. I can't find this number anywhere and need to get an air filter plus some carburetor parts, can you help? A manual would be great. Thanks in advance.

I have your same setup. 1970 Horse 1 tiller (#13845). Go to ebay and type in H60 carb. They are $15 and work fine. The filter can be cleaned, unless it's too far gone. You may have to adjust the carb once it's on the engine. Quite easy, turn the screw on the bottom of the fuel bowl until you find a happy medium. BTW, your engine was made on the 69th day of either 1972 or 1982. The "D" at the end of the serial # is the line from which it came from.

Oh that poor old and abused lawn tractor, I've never understood why people buy such nice equipment and then they just completely skip maintenance and just let it rust outside, it's mind boggling...

Spencer Clements this was a common problem on these lawn tractors, it doesn't always mean that they've been abused.

Wow I didn't know there were people that need a video to change a PTO switch, would have been great to see the diagnosis process. I kinda think that if you need a video to replace the switch you better leave it broken and in the garage for everyone's safety! But then again I bought a mower that u have to push a safety button to back up so who am I to say! For the life of me I can't figure out how that makes it safer.

Another thought Danny. People like you seriously under value how you can fix stuff. Nothing works until you are on the sight. Only then does stuff work. So charge them a ton as would a lawyer.
